Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust (One of the best rock albums this year)

i thought more of The Stooges on Mind Crawler, with that Wanna Be Your Dog drums.

in short, it's Blood Lust again, only with a more generic metal production and kinda weaker melodies.

the scuzzy garage punk sound wasn't my favorite thing about blood lust. it was cool, definitely helped build the vibe, but i'm not brokenhearted to see it go. "mind crawler" and "evil love" recall that approach and rock hard enough to satisfy me. i prefer the former, but the harmonized guitars on "evil love" are particularly nice. i also dig the dark, psychedelic dreaminess things slide into over the course of side two. "valley of the dolls" and "devil's work" are early favorites.

on first blush, this doesn't quite live up to the debut's promise, but i'll willing to give it (and them) some time and the benefit of the doubt.

"devil's work" is the definite highlight for me. "follow the leader" is the most interesting shift in tone but i kinda don't like it that much?

i take it more as an ambient drone interlude than a proper song, and on that level it's p cool. certainly prefer it to the knife's moves in that direction on their new album.

i agree with nostromo. i'm definitely missing the skuzziness of blood lust.

it's true that the cleaner sound and deemphasis of heavy-duty riffage maybe threatens to turn them into black mountain or maybe a darkside cousin to tame impala

So far I don't hear anything as powerful as "Ritual Knife" but there's still a lot of good stuff here.

some musicians in this band! seems like this album may be a bit better thought out.

They probably practiced the songs a lot more. There's definitely noticeable mistakes on "Blood Lust," possibly due to the foggy haze of weed smoke that was likely surrounding them during recording. (ie "13 Candles" the bass switching to different parts of the song at the wrong time.) Those are some of my favorite moments on the album.

I really want to like this band but I feel like witch did this so much better 5 years ago. but I see a couple other people beat me to that observation last year.

My little bro is really into metal and he played me this guy's record and it was fucking great.

xp Witch is still badass, but I now like Uncle Acid better.

witch IS still badass, and i'm not sure which i prefer. that first witch album is a highpoint of the decade for me.

well I dunno, I don't follow that stuff. I just mean here on ilm. I don't get why there's so much hype here about this band compared to other similar bands, other than the fact that this one is british. I can't keep track of who is from where though so that perception might be off.

i'm an american, and afaic, provenance isn't an issue. i don't ride harder for high on fire just cuz they're american. and uncle acid have a p distinctive angle on their genre.
