I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, that's otm i guess.

i thought more of The Stooges on Mind Crawler, with that Wanna Be Your Dog drums.

nostormo, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

in short, it's Blood Lust again, only with a more generic metal production and kinda weaker melodies.

the scuzzy garage punk sound wasn't my favorite thing about blood lust. it was cool, definitely helped build the vibe, but i'm not brokenhearted to see it go. "mind crawler" and "evil love" recall that approach and rock hard enough to satisfy me. i prefer the former, but the harmonized guitars on "evil love" are particularly nice. i also dig the dark, psychedelic dreaminess things slide into over the course of side two. "valley of the dolls" and "devil's work" are early favorites.

on first blush, this doesn't quite live up to the debut's promise, but i'll willing to give it (and them) some time and the benefit of the doubt.

wanna be yr dog piana too

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i meant the piano sorry

nostormo, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

"devil's work" is the definite highlight for me. "follow the leader" is the most interesting shift in tone but i kinda don't like it that much?

ta-nehisi goatse (fadanuf4erybody), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

i take it more as an ambient drone interlude than a proper song, and on that level it's p cool. certainly prefer it to the knife's moves in that direction on their new album.

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

i agree with nostromo. i'm definitely missing the skuzziness of blood lust.

authentically inauthentic (Pat Finn), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

it's true that the cleaner sound and deemphasis of heavy-duty riffage maybe threatens to turn them into black mountain or maybe a darkside cousin to tame impala

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

maybe

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

wait if there's no heavy duty riffage, what is there?!

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

So far I don't hear anything as powerful as "Ritual Knife" but there's still a lot of good stuff here.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

some musicians in this band! seems like this album may be a bit better thought out.

j., Tuesday, 16 April 2013 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

They probably practiced the songs a lot more. There's definitely noticeable mistakes on "Blood Lust," possibly due to the foggy haze of weed smoke that was likely surrounding them during recording. (ie "13 Candles" the bass switching to different parts of the song at the wrong time.) Those are some of my favorite moments on the album.

I really want to like this band but I feel like witch did this so much better 5 years ago. but I see a couple other people beat me to that observation last year.

wk, Thursday, 18 April 2013 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

My little bro is really into metal and he played me this guy's record and it was fucking great.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 18 April 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

DL, that is a great review. Can I just say you are truly an amazing writer?

Will dip my toe in the new album this weekend.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 18 April 2013 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Thursday, 18 April 2013 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

Does anyone know whether this will be released on regular vinyl rather than $31 colored vinyl?

blatherskite, Friday, 19 April 2013 23:42 (thirteen years ago)

the vinyl sold out before i knew about it but a regular vinyl version is coming

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 20 April 2013 03:11 (thirteen years ago)

xp Witch is still badass, but I now like Uncle Acid better.

billstevejim, Saturday, 20 April 2013 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

witch IS still badass, and i'm not sure which i prefer. that first witch album is a highpoint of the decade for me.

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 April 2013 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

remind me again why do pitchfork ignore this band?!

nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

lol, pitchfork hates this sort of thing

wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

British?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think there's another example of this kind of ignorance of succesful "indie" band

nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

nah, they give music like this sevens and below if they bother to review it

wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

I get the feeling that "british" is the whole reason this band is so hyped, right?

wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

NME, Kerrang etc haven't covered them at all. No hype from them whatsoever.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:25 (thirteen years ago)

"you want us to cover you? send us a copy of this esoteric label, dammit! we are spoiled"

nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

NME did cover Mind Control though:

http://www.nme.com/reviews/various-artists/14322

nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

well I dunno, I don't follow that stuff. I just mean here on ilm. I don't get why there's so much hype here about this band compared to other similar bands, other than the fact that this one is british. I can't keep track of who is from where though so that perception might be off.

wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

i'm an american, and afaic, provenance isn't an issue. i don't ride harder for high on fire just cuz they're american. and uncle acid have a p distinctive angle on their genre.

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, the distinctive angle is the thing, not the british. i'm not british.

nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

I guess I don't hear that. what's the distinctive angle?

wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

non generic doom metal (unique vocals and dirtier, "proto punk"/garage sound)

nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

hmm, I guess I don't hear that any more so than bands like witch, danava, or graveyard.

wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats = Nirvana
Graveyard = Soundgarden
Danava = Screaming Trees
Witch = Oasis

how's life, Saturday, 20 April 2013 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

lol. oasis/nirvana seem backwards though.

wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

VOL 1 is their best album guys.
admit it.

nostormo, Monday, 22 April 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

here's one reason why:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN-zvLWV_7E

nostormo, Monday, 22 April 2013 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

the "distinctive angle" in this record, is the main reason why.

nostormo, Monday, 22 April 2013 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

these motherfuckers don't give a fuck (nsfw btw)

http://acidcoven.com/garbagedump.html

how's life, Saturday, 27 April 2013 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno they seem to have a pretty solid commitment to boobies

j., Saturday, 27 April 2013 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, I'm not sure how such a carefully curated photo blog constitutes not giving a fuck
