the 'took a knee and plugged in' line made me irl lol so hard

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 8 April 2013 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

"young volcanoes" is so good, i hear so many singles on this record

J0rdan S., Monday, 8 April 2013 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

my girlfriend likened "young volcanoes" to train which has momentarily ruined the song for me

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 8 April 2013 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

like they wrote a track called "save rock and roll" and not only got elton john to sing on it but also had him sing one of their old lines

i guess i don't know whether to roll my eyes or to fist pump and cheer at somebody writing a song about the state of rock n roll in... 2013

nb without having heard the actual song, obv

乒乓, Monday, 8 April 2013 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

lol i was re-reading the infinity on high thread this weekend and i compared "what a catch" to train u_u

J0rdan S., Monday, 8 April 2013 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

"young volcanoes" sounds like the most blatant fun. rip on the record tho

J0rdan S., Monday, 8 April 2013 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

dudes you should've seen the way my eyes glimmered at the start of "miss missing you"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 8 April 2013 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the first time i heard that i was like "ah man brad's gonna die when he hears this"

J0rdan S., Monday, 8 April 2013 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

I'll take a FOB fun. ripoff every single time over hearing fun. soulessly whoaohhhh ever again

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 8 April 2013 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

I WANNA SEE YOUR ANIMAAAAALLLL SIDE
LET IT ALL OUUUUUUUT

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 8 April 2013 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

Not sure if this is outside the scope of the conversation, but has anybody written anything about how FOB became such a critically respected, "important" band? I don't really understand that POV, but I'm interesting in learning how the consensus changed so drastically

Evan R, Monday, 8 April 2013 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

don't worry, they really haven't

J0rdan S., Monday, 8 April 2013 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

the answer is Dom xp

乒乓, Monday, 8 April 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

critics have always mostly liked them ime

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 8 April 2013 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

meanwhile, it's courtney bitch

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 8 April 2013 17:07 (thirteen years ago)

omg the sample of "chicago is so two years ago" on the title track.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 8 April 2013 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

oh shi I didn't even notice

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 8 April 2013 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

Wow @ this record. Up to Just One Yesterday...

MikoMcha, Monday, 8 April 2013 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

i think the biggest roadblock for me w/ this record is how much i loved Stump's solo album and his lyric writing that going back to hearing him as the mouthpiece for rmde Wentz witticisms feels like a downgrade

the drummer for gay Daddy Yankee (some dude), Monday, 8 April 2013 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

patrick's laugh at 1:30 in Young volcanoes, so awesome

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 8 April 2013 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

the good news is everybody gets to have an outlet
the bad news is everybody gets to have an outlet

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 8 April 2013 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

we aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare wild

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 8 April 2013 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

"My Songs" sounds like it sampled Britney. Sooo many hoox on this album.

mox twelve, Monday, 8 April 2013 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

calling "rat a tat" as the ultimate set of wentz lyrics

I’m about to make the sweat roll backwards
And your heart beat in reverse
Our guts can’t be reworked
As alone as a little white church in the middle of the desert
Getting burned

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

no emo lyrics have ever really reached the heights of deja entendu

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 01:49 (thirteen years ago)

i wonder how many times hearts have beaten in reverse in his discography

some dude, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

Just interviewed Messrs Stump and Wentz for a podcast. Not a band I've ever taken much notice of, but genuinely delightful interviewees.

Trans-Europe Stopping Train (ithappens), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 11:01 (thirteen years ago)

i think the biggest roadblock for me w/ this record is how much i loved Stump's solo album and his lyric writing...

man, i wish i had your problems. i tried so damn hard with stump solo, really i did. wanted to love it, but could barely manage grudging respect. glad to see FOB back together.

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 11:23 (thirteen years ago)

there are ways in which the instrumentation/production doesn't remotely measure up to the band's, but as a showcase for his songwriting/vocals i thought it was pretty stellar.

some dude, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

some dude, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:15 (thirteen years ago)

man almost none of those records conform to the "sent musicians back to their main bands" narrative

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:42 (thirteen years ago)

xxp, yeah that's fair. the production and arrangements sabotage what could (and should) have been a much better album.

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

pffft

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

if you can't even get down with spiraling alternate universe time jam "cryptozoology" then i just don't even know

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

i am generally down with time jam

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 15:21 (thirteen years ago)

ahaha i was just sort of reacting to the idea that the production and arrangements sabotage soul punk bc i love that production, those arrangements, so prince

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i like how the album is musically very Prince and vocally very MJ.

some dude, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

They told me this album was much more stripped down and simple than they had originally intended. I said that if this was what stripped back sounded like, God only knows what over the top would have sounded like. They said: like white noise.

Trans-Europe Stopping Train (ithappens), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

i mean there is a leanness to it. "my songs" for instance feels like it has very few elements

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

My god this album.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

It's like the rock version of the Carly Rae Jepsen album.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

are you having a menage w/ this and the Paramore?

some dude, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

Yes.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

commence retina burning

:)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

Actually I've been so intensely reminded of my love of both bands this week that I suddenly feel inspired to hear all the emo-crossover I never checked out before (Say Anything etc.)

Tim F, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

oh man Say Anything Is A Real Boy is still my fav major label emo album of them all

some dude, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah that's top of my list.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

but yeah between these albums and the MCR breakup is really is a good time to reconnect w/ this stuff. been meaning to check out Brad's rolling thread.
