"Still Into You" is so good at what it does -- appropriate criticism on a day when we honor Roger Ebert.

and it was a talent perceivable from "emergency" on; when i first caught the video on fuse i was struck immediately by how it employed the extreme drama of parallel emo acts at the time but to a much more controlled and designed scale

idk why everything i hear by this band just slides off my brain when stuff in the same ballpark by lindsay lohan, ashlee simpson etc ends up as all-time classic jams
listening now and, like when i listened to their last one, nooooooothing is sticking

"Still Into You" is so good at what it does
checked track listing to look fwd to this and apparently it happened three songs ago and i didn't notice
Yeah, I found I'm wasn't so enthusiastic about this first listen. Reminded of No Doubt at times in not a good way.

I want to clarify that by stating that Brand New Eyes is still a regular go to album for me. Love it more and more over time.
― MikoMcha, Friday, 5 April 2013 11:31 (eleven years ago) link
Evan R is otm as far as my first impressions of this album goes - I wanted some tunes with that 'canned heaviness' and the super sharp sound they had. Love BNE.. admittedly I did expect a departure since they specifically talked about some of my favorite songs as types this wouldn't include.
Getting over that there's a lot of enjoy and they still sound like Paramore frequently. Take away the interludes and I can't find too many weakness, really. It's good. Wouldn't mind if Hayley got a bit angry again for their next release, tho.
― abcfsk, Friday, 5 April 2013 12:25 (eleven years ago) link
There's some truth to this. Also think it's her phrasing, too. She falls back on the same phrasing a lot, which can make even dissimilar songs bleed together
― Evan R, Friday, 5 April 2013 14:29 (eleven years ago) link
Brand New Eyes is still my favorite, but the more time I spend with this one I'm glad it's not a straight reduxe. That album was so tight and focused, but I'm enjoying how loose and leisurely this one is.
― Evan R, Friday, 5 April 2013 14:31 (eleven years ago) link
i was really disappointed with brand new eyes at the time bc after how sharp and individual "ignorance" sounded the rest seemed kind of uniform and dull
got over that eventually, but that's definitely not an issue with this record

I wonder if at least one point of distinction is that Lindsay, Ashlee etc. are stars - both in the literal sense of being celebrities but also in that their music is organised around their personalities which the songs present as exceptional, or at least exemplary - they feel the pain that we feel, but they feel it more intensely than we do, they feel it for us.
Whereas I feel with Hayley it's like, she kinda only exists as the personality of the song, I take away no particular interest in her as a fully functioning coherent identity distinct from what she brings to each song. And yet she fills each song completely and perfectly.

I SHOULD BE OVER ALL THE BUTTERFLIIIIIIIIIIES
― markers, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:23 (eleven years ago) link
i really have no idea of ashlee as a celebrity, when i first heard her all i knew was that she was the sister of another pop star i didn't care about much. still don't, really.
listening to paramore i always feel like the singer and personality are buried pretty deeply in the mix, to the songs' detriment
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:34 (eleven years ago) link
like she may well be selling the song but it's so indistinct that i almost can't hear her properly
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:35 (eleven years ago) link
xxpost YES that line is awesome.
Also abcfsk knows what's up w/r/t "Proof".
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:35 (eleven years ago) link
I'm not saying you care about Ashlee b/c she's literally a celebrity, I'm saying her music is designed to emphasise her personality. Whereas I think Paramore's music does something else - I'd cautiously agree with "the singer and personality are buried pretty deeply in the mix" except I don't think it's detrimental.
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:36 (eleven years ago) link
More like, Hayley's performance are just an extension of the song qua song, like a guitar solo or awesome drum attack.
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:37 (eleven years ago) link
performances even.
i suspect that it might take a proper big hit to make them click with me à la carly rae jepsen

(who also only exists as the personality of the song)
lots of thematic agreements amongst hayley's songs tho, espesh from brand new eyes on when half of them become about the band (but still tie in to pre-tumult obsessions like self-doubt and fear of being a bad person and faith or unfaith in people or god and her near-religious belief in the importance of being in a rock band). they aren't a Lyrics Band and hayley's not a great writer but if you know specifically what feelings she's overcoming by willing herself to be a rock star sometimes it's more thrilling.
"proof" is my favorite on here i think.

Yes Carly is a very good point of comparison for the distinction I was thinking of!
Did you ever hear "Misery Business" though? That was their big hit in the US (I think due to appearing in Twilight).
yes absolutely, but I think this almost heightens the effect I'm referring to? It's like she's spirit animal of the band's music.
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:47 (eleven years ago) link
i've heard "misery business" but can't remember anything about it, every paramore song i've heard i've had to actively go seeking out - they've never had any hit big enough for me to have heard in the wild

FTR Lex I don't really expect you to change your mind on this regardless of what you hear. I was asking about "Misery Business" because I expected that you'd have heard it and still have been underwhelmed.
"Misery Business" was huge over here, though very belatedly. I heard it on the radio constantly. Was Twilight hype not a big deal in the UK?

The lyrics may be better on this album but BNE was so.. interesting. The way it was pitched as a 'we're over our troubles' album but the lyrics were clearly full of anger and spite and conflict, which turned out to reflect the mood of the band. Add what dlh mentions about added conflict with her faith and you end up with an album where I was constantly listening to the lyrics when ipodding the album on my way to work.

Yes but in Australia it only became big after the film. Australia and the UK tend to be analogous in such things. Obv that doesn't apply to the US.

also, the Harris campaign should figure out how to use that track for that coveted youth vote.
