yeah potential for shitfits is amazing

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 April 2013 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

It's possible I'm just imagining Morbs' "I'm not voting in this bullshit" response.

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Thursday, 4 April 2013 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

he's a fan of certain musicals iirc

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 April 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

Would this be limited to concerts and musicals, or would music-based documentaries also be eligible?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 April 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

1776 4 lyfe

the dubious bros. (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

man if you poll concert films and rock docs w/ actual musicals i will totally loudly be in the morbs camp. the thought of spinal tap winning that thing is reason enough to scuttle the idea imo.

balls, Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

Spinal Tap is a bad example. That movie is as consciously crafted as Singin in the Rain.

alternately mean and handsy (Eric H.), Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

I say, throw 'em all together, but maybe with the one restriction that the film should have had a theatrical run (e.g., no home-video-only concerts/docs).

Pope Frank is the messenger of your doom (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'd buy it as 'a musical' more than rattle and hum (or even purple rain) but still gimme a break. setting a rule of 'narrative based' and 'music composed specifically for this narrative whether originating on stage or screen' would eliminate some dude managing to get that cameron crowe pearl jam doc in the top ten but would also eliminate singin in the rain and all that jazz among many others.

balls, Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:23 (thirteen years ago)

How about 'dramatic narrative with music' as a definition. I for one would definitely want to be voting for Spinal Tap and Ladies & Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains as well as more traditional musicals. It wouldn't be as much fun without a certain amount of mixture, but I'm not down with documentaries being in there too.

Wicker Man #1

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

Good call. I always forget about that in terms of musical films, but it definitely counts.

Also, I realise now that my definition is pretty much any film with a soundtrack. Does it work if we make it 'dramatic narrative with diegetic songs that are central to the film's narrative'? Way to sap out all the fun of everything, emil.y.

Mordy, Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

i like the 'theatrical run' idea although i guess that shuts out some (many?) live movies and docs; Blur's No Distance.. had like a one night stand in UK cinemas,
REM's TourFilm was VHS only over here etc. unless we count 'theatrical run' as 'it was on once.. somewhere or other'. was LCD's Shut Up And Play The Hits released in theatres in the States?

piscesx, Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

yeah Wicker Man was in the MOJO Top 100 journos-voted list; along with Pretty In Pink, Two Lane Black-Top, Blow-Up and others that you wouldn't call 'musical' as such.

piscesx, Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

The LCD movie was a "One Night Only" thing in theatres

Vol. 3: The Life & Times of E. "Boom" Carter (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

hey guys you can move the discussion over here:
A ballot submission movie poll poll: where do we go from here? I predict ilxor clusterfuck.

so that the ilm'ers don't run you off with torches :)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:52 (thirteen years ago)

NBS, didn't mean to put pressure on you, especially if you're sick! I was just getting antsy and wanted to get your pulse, as it were. Anyway, as I'm not exactly a veteran of these ballot polls, I didn't realize that they didn't roll out concurrently, so no worries if I don't get my POLLy RIGHT THIS GODDAMNED SECOND.

Leeena Dunham (Leee), Friday, 5 April 2013 01:21 (thirteen years ago)

So I picked up Dance Hall At Louse Point (the main hole in my Peej collection) for cheap this weekend, and I just got done revisiting Dry for the first time in years. BRING ON THE POLL!

Le Bateau Ivre, you're up next -- ready to roll out the Cocteau Twins poll nextweekish?

WilliamC, Thursday, 25 April 2013 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

Hey, can I lobby/volunteer for a Ramones poll at #80? Judy vs. Suzy vs. Sheena!

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 25 April 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

Sure, I'll put that one in on the next full list with you as the runner (tentative) -- in case anyone wants to volunteer to take it.

I don't envy you the job you're going to have with Dylan.

WilliamC, Thursday, 25 April 2013 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

Dylan will be fun. Already trying to figure how many side polls I can cram into that one.

Paging Le Bateau Ivre

What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

Hey all... Saw a bat signal in a footy thread... I am not ready to host a poll right now (didn't even remember this was up). I'm very sorry, but am not in a position to do it right now. I'm sorry.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 23:47 (thirteen years ago)

that was uncool

the norman wisdom of gaffers (darraghmac), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

I know it's "uncool", D. Forgotten about it entirely, been off ILX for a year or so due to extreme shittiness. No need to rub it in.

Again, apologies.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

not you. those men......who came looking for you. they must die for ilf to live free

the norman wisdom of gaffers (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

No worries and no apologies necessary, LBI! Hope things are better/get better. Let me know if you want to bump the Cocteaus down the list or drop it altogether.

That brings us to ArchCarrier and Sonic Youth, what what?

What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 00:46 (thirteen years ago)

Bring on some Yoofs!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

Of course, I'm realizing I'll just be disappointed because everyone else seems to like SY I don't care much for and vice versa.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

oh shit, New Order is on deck

Bee OK, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

fwiw i'd be happy to help in any way possible with 46, 48 and particularly 58

(i'd be happy to help with the others too, but those are the artists i know most completely)

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

I remember welcoming your help on Yo La Tengo somewhere upthread, mookieproof. Summer of '14, I'm guessing.

clemenza, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:29 (thirteen years ago)

really am hoping that someone will take Le Bateau Ivre spot and do the Cocteau Twins.

anyone?

Bee OK, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

woo go buds xp

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:31 (thirteen years ago)

mookie are u as excited as I am for PINK FLOYD

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 04:18 (thirteen years ago)

no

a poll can only claim that some things rule less than others

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 04:31 (thirteen years ago)

I ILXmailed ArchCarrier -- hope it's a working address.

What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, that's unexpected - and a little inconvenient. Let me try to get everything in order, unless someone volunteers to do Cocteau Twins in the next couple of hours.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 15:32 (thirteen years ago)
