hardly a novel observation, but this makes me think that earl is an amazing writer, but def not the most charasmatic rapper around. staples brings a lot more personality to his (much less distinctive) verse.

earl definitely seems less charismatic since growing up, there's a weird dead-eyed quality to his raps that wasn't there before

I’m a 23-year-old psychology student from Sydney and in June this year, I was subjected to a horrific torrent of abusive tweets from fans of touring American rapper Tyler Okonma. I challenged Okonma’s lyrics which encourage rape and violence against women by vocally supporting a petition on change.org that suggested he shouldn’t be playing all-age shows.

At Tyler’s concert in Sydney the next day, he told his fans he hoped my children got STDs, and “dedicated” songs to me that included lyrics like “punch a bitch in her mouth just for talkin' shit”.

The abuse started almost instantly. First a drip, then a rush, then a flood. I felt physically sick. He had 1.7 million fans, and it felt like every single one of them had some violence stored up for me - a promise to assault me, the threat that they would rape me, an expression of hatred for my life and my freedom.

It was terrifying at first, and then I started to feel totally disconnected from myself. When one of them said he was going to mutilate my body, I couldn’t comprehend that he could be talking about me. The messages were coming at such a rate I couldn’t keep up.

I received threats from Okonma’s fans constantly for two weeks and I still get the odd tweet of abuse today. In a tone eerily similar to Okonma’s lyrics they sent messages like: “shut the f--- up cuz if I see you on the streets I’m gonna snatch u in a alley and force this d--- in you,” “how’s that for promoting rape? I’m f---ing DOING it! So watch ur back, but ur families will be first” and “you know you secretly want @f---tyler to forcibly penetrate your anal cavity”.

Their legacy is one that demands we bask in complicated truths, reminding us that nurturing the parts that don’t fit is how any culture moves forward.

too bad none of them ever actually made a great front-to-back album. Ocean came closest I guess.

I think Blonde and I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside qualify, but yeah, I remember how much excitement there was for Goblin after "Yonkers," and how deflated everyone was when the record came out.

y'all are shortchanging the whole crew. Earl has made 2 excellent albums, Tyler has been up and down but at least is interesting, Syd/Internet's made a couple excellent albums, Frank is obviously on his own journey, but 'nostalgia, ultra' is a classic and 'channel orange' is good, and the rest of these dudes do their thing. 4 big-time, relevant artists out of a crew of 8-10 is pretty good. never mind both the short- and long-term impact they had in terms of the industry, the internet, youth culture, etc. they altered things forever!

i'm not even a huge fan, but given what they were when they started and where they're at now, the story of OF is one of major success and influence.

I can agree that they were successful and influential and still believe, as the article itself notes, that the actual music was never consistently impressive

our culture is in a post-music place now, and they had something to do with it. I don't like the outcome, but I can't deny that that's what happened either.

Doris is possibly my favorite album of the 2010s so far.

earl is consistently impressive. they only need 1 ringer.
