i haven't watched or heard that yet - he can wait - but the positioning around this album is very much "we win back the middle-class media/critics" isn't it - collabs with crit-faves like diplo, well-timed interviews in which he finally apologises...the peddling of the "changed man" narrative is strong with this one

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:29 (thirteen years ago)

it's a loverman song for sure

乒乓, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

whatever happened to ne-yo's anime suite. i bet that woudl have been 10000x better than 'fine china'

this post is a 2 year old throwback from the F.A.M.E. era?

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

i mean...diplo already produced his biggest post-'comeback' single

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:32 (thirteen years ago)

video is ugh but i kinda like "Fine China" as a song, surprisingly weak high notes aside

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:32 (thirteen years ago)

aaahhh i actually completely forgot diplo already collaborated with him

nm then

kendrick's on the new one too, sigh

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i was about to say kendrick is the latest rapper to jump at the chance to do multiple songs with skeezy breezy

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:42 (thirteen years ago)

goddammit

the pheromones of hot clothing (DJP), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:59 (thirteen years ago)

kendrick's making himself more ubiquitous on features than it really seemed like he would. he's doing the new miguel single, he's on the new 50 single (which is actually great) and then this chirs brown thing

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:20 (thirteen years ago)

he's also touring with steve aoki right now (?)

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:21 (thirteen years ago)

i'd like to hear kendrick on more features (CB apart), one of the most underrated aspects of GKMC was the way he played with his voice so effectively and the variety of vocal modes he employed

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:25 (thirteen years ago)

I understand the business plan, I just think it sucks that apparently all roads to black musical success lead through Chris Brown

the pheromones of hot clothing (DJP), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

do you like his verse on "fuckin problems" xp

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

haha that is a real goon litmus test

乒乓, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

i don't remember it, i've only given that song like one cursory listen

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

well if lex likes kendrick's different vocal approaches i'm wondering how he feels about "girl, i know you want DIH DIH"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

i don't necessarily like all his vocal approaches, i like that he has a variety of them and hopefully this would make him a good or at least more thoughtful guest rapper

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'd imagined similar (and the miguel seems like it'd be an especially sympathetic fit) but from what i've encountered he is a weirdly horrible guest rapper, too solipsistic for purpose basically

DIH DIH (whether annoying or not) is actually the only good bit of his probs verse just by virtue of being memorable - the rest drones past, flat and complicated

r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:38 (thirteen years ago)

kendrick on the "r.i.p." remix is cool, works well on a dj mustard beat

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

yeah his "fuckin problems" verse has a distinct air of "wait shit i didn't realize this was gonna be a massive hit"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

just relistened to "fuckin' problems" and yeah kendrick is somehow almost completely unmemorable and rote

it's a hit?! it's really not a great song

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it's basically one of the 5 biggest rap songs of the last few months

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

i like when he says "girl i'm kendrick lamar" too, inadvertently seems to acknowledge everyone's bored blank looks

r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

lol yes

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

on the off occasion i hear fkn probs i tend to let it roll by but now i'm paying attention and asap's verse is one million billion times more objectionable than p much anything, like a fucking human tumblr reblogging random rap lines

r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

yea

乒乓, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

a$ap kinda encapsulated

and then fucking drake says he's going to put the beatles on

what a wretched song all round

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

a$ap is terrible on everything but his verse at least FITS the song to the point that i don't mind it like kendrick's verse. also lol "humpin' dog" clean version.

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

in the edited version asap goes "hilfiger rich" and wasn't there a controversy w/ hilfiger and afro-americans recently??

乒乓, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:03 (thirteen years ago)

lol

the pheromones of hot clothing (DJP), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

that verse is super rebloggy even by rocky's standards but i've grown to dig it

i get "put the chrome to your dome and make you sweat like keith" stuck in my head frequently, that's a catchy bit

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

Lol. Kendrick the guest rapper doesn't do it for me yet. And Fucking Problems is indeed a horrible song.

longneck, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

nah it's pretty decent, the radio edit is just really hilarious tho

乒乓, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:11 (thirteen years ago)

it's a jam but could use better verses. the beat and tity are the best things about it.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

Idk, it just always felt so... manufactured to me. There's no chemistry between anyone involved and the hook sounds like a machine wrote it. Not denying its general catchiness though.

longneck, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno i will give some credit to the OVO lead single factory that the songs they hand to various artists feel somewhat crafted for them -- it sounds enough like an A$AP Rocky song that it makes sense as his single in ways it wouldn't if that beat had been for a Meek Mill single or a French Montana single or something. the seams do show, though, and i dunno why 2 Chainz doesn't have a verse.

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'd imagined similar (and the miguel seems like it'd be an especially sympathetic fit) but from what i've encountered he is a weirdly horrible guest rapper, too solipsistic for purpose basically

― r|t|c, Wednesday, April 3, 2013 9:38 AM (5 hours ago) Bookmark

kendrick's solipsism best shown in how polite and reserved his 'beast!' at the end of his problems verse is, as if he hadn't listened to the other two previously. he says it so daintily

乒乓, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

lol the way everyone on that song says "BEAST!" after a whatever verse is easily the worst thing about it

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

also one of the funniest things about Kendrick on the Lonely Island song was him doing that

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

apparently the 'beast!' thing is an asap catchphrase? it's been easy to not follow his career

乒乓, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

lol I hadn't even noticed they were all beasting off the riesling
