song is nice, i guess.not as good as the first one.

i like how he quietly plays air guitar with his fingers on that clip.

nostormo, Thursday, 21 March 2013 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

What's the first one, again? This is the first thing I've heard from the new release.

it seems the new record is going to sound like Smoke Ring, but with a more "professional" production (by John Agnello)

fine by me!

nostormo, Thursday, 21 March 2013 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

first review of the new record (4.5 stars out of 5):

i'm excited to hear this

teledyldonix, Sunday, 31 March 2013 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

whole album stream!
sounds AWESOME!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2013/apr/01/kurt-vile-pretty-daze-album-stream

nostormo, Monday, 1 April 2013 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

the production is rich and full of small details, as oppose to smoke ring which was more stripped down.
maybe he was jealous of War On Drugs?

anyway, sounds like the sort of an album it's hard not to love.
Vile for the Masses, in a good way.

nostormo, Monday, 1 April 2013 12:43 (thirteen years ago)

streaming on npr too, this sounds gorgeous

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 April 2013 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

Is it wrong of me to suggest that this record sounds a LOT like Frank Black and the Catholics as a jam band? (I personally don't think that's a bad thing, by the way.)

@GracieLoPan #fyi (Display Name (this cannot be changed):), Monday, 1 April 2013 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

this sounds very nice

ciderpress, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

I love when albums release in accordance with the beginning of an appropriate season.

Evan, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

Excited to jam this at home, something tells me I didn't get the full effect on my work laptop speakers.

global tetrahedron, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

"Is it wrong of me to suggest that this record sounds a LOT like Frank Black and the Catholics as a jam band?"

yes.

nostormo, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:40 (thirteen years ago)

it is also a much more optimistic record than SRFMH, a disadvantage in a way.

nostormo, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

what a great sounding record so far, even on shitty stream quality

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 April 2013 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

"But the guitar playing is better and the ideas are new."
― nostormo, Sunday, December 23, 2012 2:24 PM

nope. 'too hard' and 'goldtone' are nice tho

am0n, Monday, 1 April 2013 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

it's not me, it's Kurt! though there is at least one new idea, which is a much more detailed and accessible sound.

record is great, but there's nothing as immediately strong as Society Is a Friend or as depressing as Runners Up. of course, it needs more listens.

nostormo, Monday, 1 April 2013 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

this sounds great already, can't wait to buy it

"wakin on a pretty day" was just in 'pretty nice' territory for me (other than the guitar stuff toward the end of the track) so i am pleased to find a lot more on the album that i think is more interesting

teledyldonix, Monday, 1 April 2013 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

pure pain is an early highlight for me

diamonddave85, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

I have absolutely no desire to listen to this dude's stuff

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

cool story bro

diamonddave85, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

some people like square shells but no matter how many times i return to it, i think it's the one release of his that i DON'T like! it sounds really bland and rounded off

Funny you say that cause by elimination, the only tracks I don't get(yet?)
Are Shame Chamber and Pure Pain. The others are all great, maybe
Girl Called Alex is somewhat the highlight of the all highlights .

nostormo, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

shame chamber was the one that jumped out at me. rest of the record kind of washed over me without making an impact.

mizzell, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

it's a grower. the melodies are kinda buried under the production. but they are there.

nostormo, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

this album is good, but so far it lacks the distinct feeling halo had. that one was like a defining statement of burned out alienation, this one is just a collection of good tunes... so could be worse.

Spectrum, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

just

nostormo, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

compared to smoke ring for my halo, yeah. i've never heard the feelings he captured on that album expressed so well.

Spectrum, Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

well, i agree that he is at his best with the sad songs. i'd say Halo might had stronger songs, but more fillers as well.
(though there is a Halo sort of tune here as well: Girl Called Alex). The new one is much more consistent ( a problem he had with all of his records till now).

i have a problem with the half baked production Halo had on some of the songs as well.
as i said, it's more accessible, but what the hell.

nostormo, Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

nostormo, Monday, 8 April 2013 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

Square Shells is so good. I rate Halo higher but Ocean City is a great track.

liking this record a lot. along with the two early release tracks (Pretty Day and Never Run Away) I'm most into Too Hard and Girl Called Alex. (which is my daughter's name so I was glad nothing bad happened to Alex in the song)

dmr, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

I promise not to smoke too much, I promise not to party ... too hard.

dmr, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

Some of the tracks seemed a bit bland on first listen honestly- it is a grower, right? Don't think I've had a close enough listen either. I had been excited about it especially due to that first track.

Evan, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

it is a grower if there ever was one, though i have to say i liked the record from the start. now i like it even more.

about Alex= she will be married happily to Marc, so you're safe, dmr.

i think Alex, and Was All Talk are the best songs here, though really, it's all kinda great.

nostormo, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

definitely a grower.. after the first couple of listens i was kinda bummed that i didn't like the record that much and then after a few more listens i started noticing more and more bits and pieces of songs that i REALLY liked until i basically decided that i loved the album

diamonddave85, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

otm.
and also, after you decipher the lyrics, you realize it is ,after all, a very personal and emotional record, as much as Halo was.
nice pfrk review, too.

nostormo, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

What 80s hit does "Was all talk" keep reminding me of?

j., Wednesday, 6 November 2013 03:17 (twelve years ago)

I like him live but the best part is often the acoustic solo bit to start the encore imo. not that the band is bad but he's great by himself.

yeah it's on spotify...one real keeper is the ghost of freddie roach, good tune

some longer/alt version of album tracks...the last song is a cool little instrumental snippet but it's only about 1:30 long...

no one that bought the vinyl is really missing out that much imo
