He's ugly and can't sing. It's obvious why he didn't have a career, no?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

yep

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

yeah he's kinda gross

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

until yesterday is really good

but I wish JT sang it (ducks)

During the 1999-2000 era – before the Long Frosted Bangs Phase – he was the cutest imo

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

Those JC cover images look like fake ones made for a movie whose main character is pop star "JC Chasez."

your fretless ways (Eazy), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

what do "JC" stand for – Jesus Christ?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

huh i'd never heard "until yesterday" before! seems like it was the lead single from the still-unreleased second album

JC was kinda skeevy, that's def true and i seem to remember comparing him unfavourably to JT at the time for this, but his vocals aren't especially weak? his solo career didn't take off because he wasn't as charismatic (and throughout the entire history of nsync it was obv that JT was the chosen one) but also because he was working in more dance/electronic styles that weren't as trendy back in 2004. pretty sure he could've got a hit in the UK with the right push - well, he kind of did with this INCREDIBLE basement jaxx single

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHA4vqHfbIg

i forgot he co-wrote this brilliant girls aloud album track, too

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fup8-HRPPYk

certainly think JC was the more musically adventurous - JT is way way way in thrall to the idea of the "classic" to ever really surprise any more

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

shocked JT's career survived these looks:

oh lol the cornrows ugghh

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

I always thought it was funny how Ned and Dan P. used to stan for JC Chasez while making digs at JT.

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

jt confirmed there'll be a 20/20 experience part 2 later this year and said it is inspired by thom yorke and will be in the vein of "blue ocean floor"

someone wants another p4k bnm

prolego, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

'plug it in' is my main reference point for JC, not my favorite cut from that record but he's good on it.

shit tie (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

said it is inspired by thom yorke and will be in the vein of "blue ocean floor"

dang, i was hoping it'd be nonstop "body count"s

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

i'm digging this.

it's kinda "jammy"! but i guess you can't call something that's constructed on computers etc "jammy" but it feels jammy

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

more like toe jammy

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

have you heard "like i love you"? it's a good song.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:22 (thirteen years ago)

lol you got me

"body count" is still real good

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

I'dd settle for Justin's Trans. He could rock "Computer Age."

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

i really hope that when i'm 80 and the archives for the 80s come out, neil gives another synth half of trans that could have made it one of his greatest albums :/

actually spaceship coupe even has a guitar solo! steve stevens type ish

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:25 (thirteen years ago)

"body count" is obviously just some offcut they did while thinking about "like i love you", i mean it's not actively offensive to the ears but there's nothing there to rep for

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

i mean that's cool, but i love it

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

Yesterday I tried drawing battle lines as to which ILM contingent disliked the record but gave up

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

are ppl not liking this? huh i figured y'all would like this but i can never tell w/the ilm pop music crit contingent what y'all are gonna like :/

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

I don't, alas.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

i do but I'm just a pleb :)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

some people like it, some people hate it, some people are in between, i would guess that since it's only been out a week none of us have made our final judgments yet

i definitely think anyone unreservedly repping for it is insane though

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

that'd be me

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

i'm def not on the "album inspired by thom yorke" wave but nov. is a long ways away

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

me too

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

j0rdan you hear no massive flaws in this album?

i mean it certainly has its moments but...it just doesn't work on any level at several points and it's pretty impossibly to buy into the overall conceit

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

massive flaws on this record: the anchorlessness of "mirrors" (identified by alfred), the rap on "pusher lover girl"

... eh, i mean after that, i just don't care, i enjoy getting lost in the sprawl, also i'm corny as fuck

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:36 (thirteen years ago)

massive flaws? naw

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

it's not perfect or anything but on the spectrum of "massively flawed" to "impeccable" i'm much more towards the latter than the former

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

i could see ppl getting annoyed cuz all the songs are SO LONG

but i dunno, they all tend to go in kooky directions and kinda surprise me and why not? let your freak flag fly justin

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

but this might be easier to dig if you have no particular investment in timberlake

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

it's not perfect or anything but on the spectrum of "massively flawed" to "impeccable" i'm much more towards the latter than the former

sure but must it be this spectrum? Can it be "flawed but worthwhile" to "flawed"?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

Your review and score didn't correlate, btw, but it was ever thus. You were saying "I'm fond of this flawed, long, kooky record."

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

the lack of real kook and freakiness is what makes the album seem so lifeless

near-total lack of songcraft and failure to create a particularly interesting vibe to compensate is the most major flaw

"spaceship coupe", "that girl", "mirrors" and "blue ocean floor" are all straight-up bad, bad tracks. "pusher love girl" is merely extremely dull. everything else has its moments but in every case is at least 2 minutes too long

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

i also realized how much i missed timbo's classic *mouth fart* chicka chicka chicka *mouth fart* *hand clap* drums

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

me??

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

well, let's not pretend 90% of the praise for the album isn't based on "i missed that sound" nostalgia

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that's how it read.

xpost

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

Part of me wishes there were some real *jams* on the album, but I like the sound and production enough to find pleasure in immersing myself in it for 70 minutes.

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

the review translated to a low 7 to me but I'm not good at the semiotics of PFM scoring

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't write the pitchfork review!
