it is sort of sad that putting "perlon remix" on a record would sell more copies than "markus nikolai remix" or "music for freaks remix" or "classic remix" (i use those labels since he has done stuff there that uses the straight-up heavy 4/4 thump)

yeah, markus nikolai /= perlon, despite his relations to the label; his stuff on headinghome, for instance, is nothing like the perlon sound.

two months pass...

what do folks think about the matt john single? i think it's beguiling stuff. it's just as housey and smooth as parts of the ark album and has nice cut-up textures. really pushing. it has that perlon quality where you don't know if you've been listening for 10 minutes or an hour. supposedly there is an album in the works too.

i'm also curious as to what you guys think about the last villalobos single.

on the first listen i wasn't too sure but after a couple of plays, i really, really liked it. i really love how perlon has opened up it's sonic palette. the last villalobos was the first perlon 12" i haven't bought. am i missing out?

i love that they are opening up their sonic palette too. the records sound bigger without compromising what you'd typically expect perlon to deliver.

that said, the villalobos single is sort of a hybrid affair. i am being lazy and calling it a dancefloor-friendly version of his last album. lots of deep stuff and improv going on, but the groove is front and center...well at least as close to front and center as he gets!

it's a lot less obscure sounding than his klf remixes, but it's definitely cut from the same mold, especially the b-side. (i absolutely love the klf remixes and they were the basis for the album iirc so this all makes sense. maybe.)

i am curious if they are going to do anything special for release number 50.

did anybody mention this luciano/mathew jonson co-op? it's sooo awesome! ("alpine rocket"). there's also some rumour going on about this stefan goldmann ep, with ricardo and hawtin spinning it to death - and at a night the test pressing got stolen right off ricardo's deck! now that's crazy. also looking forward to the dandyjack album. hmm...

i'm planning to play the B1 of the matt john tonight - seems like the most floor-friendly (sorry) track on the EP. the A side is nice, i still have no idea what's going on into it... much more k-housey than the B-side, more villalobosy with an akufen feel. i think it would clear most floors in BCN, though.

the new melchior is really nice as well.

philip, are you talking about "galeria de bahia" or something newer? i thought "galeria" was surprisingly peak hour stuff. i mean it's still subtly repetitive and all of his stuff has that tracky dj tool feel (which i love), but this one feels like an attempt at a more mainstream feel instead of the after-after-hours vibe his stuff usually projects.

i would love if perlon released new work along the lines of the collaboration behind the "windowshopping" single (baby ford, zip, and melchior).

two weeks pass...

The new Dandy Jack CD on Perlon is ace. Funky and totally immersive, with a bit of a Nature Records flavour too (ie, Raiders of the Lost Arp, Marco Passarini.) In fact, some tracks might even be a bit too self involved/complex for the dancefloor? I have somewhat determined this by noticing the record sounded twice as good listening as I went to sleep last night then when I was taking the train to work.

i guess the dandy jack requires deep listening. i've skimmed through it a couple of times in the shops but it didn't make me want to buy it (i think it's the only perlon record i've not bought). everyone however tells me it's great. i just wish i had the time for deep listening!

cassy's "my auntie" is a great single! the tunes are hypnotic and rhythmically disorienting like the best perlon, but take the sound somewhere closer to classic jacking house. is cassy the first (solo) woman to release on perlon?

Mind if I a) agree with Cassy love, b) agree with Dandy Jack love, c) make a very brief case for purchasing Narcotic Syntax d) agree with Stirmonster's views regarding Kalabrese, except for the fact I only know of one recent Kalabrese release (the excellent "Huhnerfest" on Stattmusik) and would like to know more about his other release.

Yes! do it....one of my fav perlon tracks. that swinging latin and echo'd drum sound just gets the people moving around the floor. the kinda tune that makes people put one arm up in the air and jump on one leg

In regards to the Dandy Jack album, if you just want to skim it, I'd say go from the end of "Arabs in the Desert" and into the beginning of "Samba Lubeck". To semi-repeat myself, in regards to the Dandy Jack album, if you want to give it a deeper listen, I'd say go from the beginning of "Arabs in the Desert" and through to the end of "Samba Lubeck".

once again, i will stand 200% behind the dandy jack album (and at first i didn't like it AT ALL)... i really think it needs to be listened to in its entirety, over quite a bit of time... skimming just won't reveal much.

the stefann goldmann is fucking fantastic. three killer tracks.

just bought cassy yesterday but haven't listened yet.

i think the cassy would work in a primetime set though, but because it's perlon it's a really flexible record too. when i say "5am endup material", i am actually referring to a san francisco club that plays dark, dubby and pumping house starting really late in the night and going past dawn where people really dance. it's very much an anything goes serious nightclubbing type of vibe.

super late to these but the two Chris Korda releases are really excellent, especially Apologize to the Future. cool and unexpected to encounter antinatalist thought in a relatively "mainstream" space. also musically feels like somewhat of a return to Perlon's more quirky, irreverent roots
