Andre 3000 is still a much more recognizable name than ultra-generic Dre tho and fed into his personal mythos. (On further reflection, I'd argue Puffy's name changes did the latter, too.)

Biggie and Kendrick were still new kids on the block. Bumpy Knuckles is a classic rap name but it's not like he gained that much by adopting it. Com's a good answer.

I think the last Young Thug tape came out around then, too. It's crap timing, because I would have liked to have ridden with it that Friday night but had to wait until sleepy Saturday. Plus it means there's no fun insta-Twitter reaction to follow.

yeah insta-Twitter reactions are so fun and not completely tedious and unnecessary and depressing

They can be all of those things, but I still like the shared experience of reacting to music, especially if it's from an artist I'm excited about

yeah there's interesting things to be found in instareactions, no one's saying they have to be the final word on releases

I'm also more tolerant of instareactions to mixtapes, which almost by design are meant to have a shorter conversational shelf life than albums. It's one thing when writers casts immediate judgement on years-in-the-making JT or MBV records; another when they fire off opinions about a Young Scooter mixtape most people might never get around to hearing

it's an independent album so i don't think it's possible to 'bury' it -- they're just tossing it out when they feel like without much advance hype, like a mixtape

i swore off checking out new gucci/bricksquad a while back because the diminishing returns and volume of output made it all feel like a waste of time, but if this actually doesn't sound exactly like all his other recent stuff i will have to at least give it a listen
