tell you what, it makes goldenheart seem really concise and unsprawling by comparison
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 10:41 (thirteen years ago)
agree with "let the groove get in" being a really welcome shot in the arm but...it's just JT vamping for like 7 minutes. why is it not 3 minutes long? there is no reason for this. you are not erykah.
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 10:43 (thirteen years ago)
okay not skipping "mirrors" this time. i get exactly what it's meant to be, it's JT pulling out what's meant to be the album's Classic Song towards the end of an album that's not been big on songcraft. like, look, verses, a chorus, structure, all that jazz. too bad it SUCKS SO MUCH AND IS SUCH AN IDEAS VOID. its big "climax" when all the music except the cavernous drum beat drops out is so embarrassing, JT why is your big emotional peak on this song such a vocally limpdick mess?

i really like the outro of "don't hold the wall"
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)
Gotta say, I love Mirrors, and his performance of it on SNL was awesome (it helped that the band and backup singers all looked like they were having a blast). The lyrics are goofy as ever (what else is new), but it's hooky and and and. I just like it.
― schwantz, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:20 (thirteen years ago)
Was not expecting this album to be so good

this is supposed to hypnotise me into a half-assed album right
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:47 (thirteen years ago)
The album felt a little tedious on my inaugural listen, which was probably inevitable given the song lengths. But that hasn't bothered me so much on subsequent listens; the whole thing really hangs together well imo
― Evan R, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
i think every outro on this is fantastic
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
don't really feel i have to hear the rest of this tbh, the form it takes will be irrelevant
it's gonna trade hard on general happiness just to hang w/ jt again, and no one's really gonna mind
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:53 (thirteen years ago)
"Suit and Tie" and "Pusher Love Girl" are easily the worst songs on the album. It's a shame it starts with those two
― matt2, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:55 (thirteen years ago)
this entire campaign is about buying into JT as a cultural great rather than the music specifically - the music is just the soundtrack to it (an efficiently tailored soundtrack, though, there's no disjoint here at all)
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I know ILM has issues with Perpetua, but this piece of his seems pretty on point:http://www.buzzfeed.com/perpetua/justin-timberlake-is-a-luxury-brand
― jaymc, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:58 (thirteen years ago)
i really hope that the inevitable people who will get starry-eyed about how beautiful and hypnotising "blue ocean floor" is will at least admit that literally nothing happens in it, no tune, no development, nothing
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:07 (thirteen years ago)
u__________u
ok how much longer of this album, i can't
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
Keep hope alive, Lex. ;)
― schwantz, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
i've got strawberry bubblegum on repeat. mini-hooks galore
― bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)
mini-hooks but not much structure
(the "don't hold the wall" thru "tunnel vision" stretch is my favourite but i wouldn't call any of those good songs)
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)
finally listening to this fucking thing. really really really want to think JT led with "Pusher Love" as a blatant self-correction to "Love Dealer"

NEVER FORGET (actually I don't hate this, but again, THIS is what Justin Timberlake is zomgcomingback from):

don't nightmares wake you up tho
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:17 (thirteen years ago)
as I feared, there is little groove in "Let The Groove Get In" -- it's a white guy shouting catchphrases in the hopes of animating a moribund rhythm program/section.

a bit Aeroplane-by-numbers, but pretty sweet - love that they kept the horns in this.

for SEVEN MINUTES
if it was a 1-min interlude as nature intended i'd probably really like it!

listening to this album on a plane while sitting beside an ugly man reading The Weekly Standard gives a new meaning to the term trans-continental stress

can someone give me a quick refresher as to "who" aeroplane is at this stage
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:29 (thirteen years ago)
"suit & tie" is much better aeroplaneised
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)
yeah this remix is the shit
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:32 (thirteen years ago)
the four tet remix is pretty shit though

i love the four tet remix
― queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:35 (thirteen years ago)
lol sarge really buying into JT's "I'm from Memphis and Memphis soul is my primary influence" schtick
― some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)
well i didn't say that
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)
i dunno you said "Its sound is rooted both in Memphis soul and Timberlake/Timbaland's own forever-futuristic sonic experimentatio" as if that's 50% of the formula
