I'd say I'm intimately familiar with only maybe a third of Miles' ouevre (specifically from Kind of Blue > "retirement" and even there there are big gaps) but I'll probably vote.

I hope one day i'll get used to ilxor enough to run a Wu or B&S poll.

Made some posts in the Madonna thread just today.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 05:46 (thirteen years ago)

I know I'm not much of a poster, but I'm lurking here every day, so don't worry about the SY poll.

65, 69, 70 and 73 seem a bit samey to me (a non-aficionado). Is there a case for chopping up the order a bit?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 12:56 (thirteen years ago)

thanking u WMC <3

ooh Petty poll? I'm IN.

I can kinda see what you mean about chopping up the order a bit though.

A good example of Extreme Metal:

I'd be fine with changing the order around or delaying things whatever.

POLLIN' WITH THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET (ILM artist poll #32 voting thread)

Last couple of days to vote in this! Surprisingly low turnout -- your vote will be powerful!

I Don't Wanna Be Dissed (By Anyone But You) (WilliamC), Thursday, 21 March 2013 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

been posting the link on the 70s poll countdown but dunno how much good its done

oh blimey, 33 comin'

Mark G, Thursday, 21 March 2013 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks, AG

I Don't Wanna Be Dissed (By Anyone But You) (WilliamC), Thursday, 21 March 2013 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

I think there are only about a dozen of these on the remainder of the list where I know enough/have enough interest to cast a vote. But three involve Dylan, CCR, and Steely Dan, so that's enough for me. Trying to imagine how mammoth the Dylan thread will be.

clemenza, Saturday, 23 March 2013 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

there are tons on that list i'm super pumped about

Stephen Thomas Duttywine (some dude), Saturday, 23 March 2013 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

Does "extreme metal" basically mean death, black, and doom? (Grindcore?)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 23 March 2013 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

It's my understanding that extreme metal refers to Europe, the band that did "The Final Countdown."

clemenza, Saturday, 23 March 2013 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

A couple of the polls where I'm totally clueless and won't be voting, I'm most interested in the results. (Jay-Z, Chic Org)

I Don't Wanna Be Dissed (By Anyone But You) (WilliamC), Saturday, 23 March 2013 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

Jay-Z and Chic (and the Pixies, and XTC, and a few others) fall into a group where there are one or two well-known songs that I completely love, after which I'm stuck. And I'm too lazy and too uncurious to do all the listening that would be required to scrape together a Top 10. But, ditto, I follow the threads.

― EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, March 23, 2013 8:19 AM (Yesterday)

yes. Grind/heavy thrash and stuff counts too but not regular thrash like Metallica or Pantera. It has to be... extreme!

Everybody wants a piece of the (Viceroy), Sunday, 24 March 2013 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

the Jay-Z one is gonna be so much fun. I have a really great idea for a subpoll.

some dude, Sunday, 24 March 2013 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

"Which of Jay-Z's 99 problems do you feel he most has a handle on?"

clemenza, Sunday, 24 March 2013 22:41 (thirteen years ago)

I have a spreadsheet question for Finefinemusic if she checks this thread, or for anybody who knows spreadsheets.

I have my Miles Davis track results, and there are a few spots where my Points column has ties between 2 songs, and the order of the two spots is determined by alphabetizing the song names. Can I get this crazy contraption to ignore that and consider # of Votes as the first tiebreaker, and Number of #1 Votes as the 2nd tiebreaker?

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 23:45 (thirteen years ago)

I can just make notes to roll out the results in the correct order if that can't be done.

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

Can I express my excitement at the upcoming PJ and Cocteaus polls?

Leeena Dunham (Leee), Thursday, 28 March 2013 01:27 (thirteen years ago)

34. PJ Harvey - Nasty, Brutish & Short
35. Cocteau Twins - Le Bateau Ivre
36. New Order - Bee OK
37. Sonic Youth - ArchCarrier

That's four in a row that I'm super stoked about contributing to and seeing. . .

!

Austin, Thursday, 28 March 2013 01:32 (thirteen years ago)

Note that Bee OK and me changed positions, so Sonic Youth is 36 and New Order 37.
But I'm already doing my homework for PJ Harvey and I'm really looking forward to the Cocteaus and New Order, two bands I should know more about than I do now.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 28 March 2013 12:00 (thirteen years ago)

Archie, that's an interesting approach, tbh, and one I wish I had time to do for artists with which I'm not already familiar. IOW, I only take part and even follow polls for artists of whom I'm already a fan.

Leeena Dunham (Leee), Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

It's so much fun to dive into the discography of an unfamiliar artist! So far, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen have been the biggest eyeopeners for me (and I didn't even vote in the Bruce poll!) Just try it out some day, for example with the Sonic Youth poll - or are you a fan already? :)

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 28 March 2013 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

leee adores Sonic Youth :)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 28 March 2013 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

ILM's Now For Something Completely Different... 70s Album Poll Results! Top 100 Countdown! (Part 2) finishes today.
Just started the Top 20.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 28 March 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

AG keeps a spreadsheet too, apparently. (PS he's being sarcastic.)

Leeena Dunham (Leee), Friday, 29 March 2013 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

ArchCarrier, I'll switch 36/37 next time I post the list.

It seemed like a good and lolworthy idea at the time, but I think I'm going to bow out of the Ween poll. If anybody wants to run it and keep it in the lineup at that spot, you can claim it, or I can condense the list by one.

I would like to float the idea of a Hendrix poll, but with not me running it because I haven't the faintest idea how.

It's pretty easy, but you do have to take an eight-week online course beforehand.
