but i will say, the vagueness is one of the greatest things about "live to tell." i remember getting obsessed with it as a kid, with what it could possibly be about.

I actually agree a bit with you DJP in that I think "Vogue" is the sound of her trying on a genre and making it look couture, whereas "Deeper and Deeper" finds her appropriately unsettled. She's not in the driver's seat in the latter, and it terrifies her.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 20:30 (eleven years ago) link
lex OTM
+ it works in the narrative of the song - she's not just listened to her mothers advice and gone headfirst into love, but become her own mother, and instead of instructing how to sing like her mother did ("when you know the notes to sing you can sing most anything" which is in ITSELF a callback reference obv, they parallel) now she's instructing herself how to DANCE, which is so immesurabley greater
― prolego, Monday, 11 March 2013 20:31 (eleven years ago) link
man there are so many callbacks in the madonna discography

― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 20:31 (eleven years ago) link
that's what Erotica does, right? She records a genre record, choosing points of view with which she's also unfamiliar.

You see, that's why the "Beautiful Stranger" video is so good--she's not in the driver's seat, and it terrifies her.

i'm one of the eight who had 'deeper and deeper' #1, sometimes my fave piece of pop music ever. had 'borderline' number two - there's a reason that was the breakthrough.
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 20:34 (eleven years ago) link
I appreciate that the overarching sound of the Erotica album is just something that will never jibe with my personal taste, but wouldn't supporters of that record even admit that, in 1992, she'd crawled up her own ass and was indulging in immense Madonna-ness to the point of alienation of her typical chart pop fans? I guess she'd earned that right, but there's really just no entry into it for me (though I did come to appreciate "Words" more in the past couple weeks). "Bad Girl" and "Rain" I kind of leave out of this equation, because they're more traditional pop ballad styles.

the middle eight of "deeper and deeper" really is the most perfectly told story within the song - you have no idea where she's going with it, it's so finely paced and each line only moves it forward a tiny bit, it's like when you're lost and drunk in an unfamiliar club and you're pushing your way through the bodies, and then "AND I'M NEVER GONNA HIDE IT AGAIN" is the moment when you just fall into the dancefloor, the place you're meant to be
then, the flamenco drop
that actually definitely is my favourite moment in all of pop music ever

erotica was chart pop! house beats were all over the charts in the early 90s, my first ever music purchase was a 40-strong compilation of them, and those beats were my first mainstream chart love

lex otm, at any rate. the sheer brassy desperation of the delivery of "mama couldn't be aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall wrooooooooooong" the first time the chorus comes around still makes me thrill. what a great song.

uh, "daddy" of course. o_O at me.
it basically sounds like Shep Pettibone stuck a microphone up his ass and then Madonna sang some lyrics into itDJP, that's the second time you made me LOL tonight about something poopy. The first time was something about a wet fart I believe.

most of the Erotica singles drastically underperformed in the US pop charts; "Erotica" (3) and "Deeper and Deeper" (7) were the only ones to crack the top ten, "Rain" stalled at 14 and "Bad Girl" barely scraped into the charts at 36, while "Fever" and "Bye Bye Baby" didn't chart at all
so, while there was definitely stuff in the pop charts mining this territory, most people over here were turning towards someone else besides Madonna for it
very righteous and well-deserved 1-2
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 20:42 (eleven years ago) link
