possibly delusional but always credit madonna for that final push getting the stooges into the rrhof
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:38 (thirteen years ago)
The disco-metal of somebody's dreams...not mine--but I like the chorus.
― clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)
The Stooges-Madonna thing was a two-way gift, probably--they made her induction almost okay for those who were appalled. (Will resist the temptation to characterize such people.)
― clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:43 (thirteen years ago)
I'm right back to being 10 and playing "Burning Up" on repeat
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:45 (thirteen years ago)
Didn't vote because I don't Madonna enough (unfortunately) but my favorite has been Into the Groove. cue laughs*
Amazing thread, superb primer and thank you all.
― Van Horn Street, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)
does anyone even hear "burning up" as a love song to an individual rather than a mission statement to the world? it's awe-inspiring
― prolego, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)
no one with any sense is going to laugh at someone picking "Into The Groove" as their favorite Madonna song
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:48 (thirteen years ago)
'into the groove' was clear favorite for #1 going in and still i think
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)
into the groove and live to tell are the #1 and #2 in this poll.
― scott seward, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)
probably right
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:50 (thirteen years ago)
how many ballots were there altogether? 50-something?
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:51 (thirteen years ago)
It's the quintessential Madonna song, isn't it? Sex + dancing + Jellybean + Desperately Seeking Susan.
― Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:51 (thirteen years ago)
with Holiday out of the way I'm all about Into the Groove
― g simmel, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:52 (thirteen years ago)
"into the groove" manages not just to encapsulate madonna but the entirety of pop music
like colossal achievement right there in itself
― prolego, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:53 (thirteen years ago)
there were 6 songs that could have ended up as my #1; I expect all of them to place (three have already) and two of them were "Live To Tell" and "Into the Groove"
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:53 (thirteen years ago)
Still holding out hope that LAP lands in slot #1, but its placement among the videos doesn't make me very confident.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)
"Lucky Star" was the only thing from S/T I voted for, FTR.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:56 (thirteen years ago)
"lucky star" is way too high at this point
feel the same way about it as lex does "holiday"
― prolego, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:56 (thirteen years ago)
totally forgot about LAP. not among my favorites.
― g simmel, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:57 (thirteen years ago)
i'm thinking "live to tell" was one of the unanimous songs among the early ballots
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)
"Lucky Star" gets the pass from me for sounding the most like something Larry Levan would've been spinning.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)
I do not understand loving all of the s/t singles, tbh
even my least favorite, "Borderline", is a great great song well deserving of tons of votes
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 19:01 (thirteen years ago)
also tying this in with "into the groove", when she sings that at live 8 and shouts "PEOPLE OF THE WORLD, NOW I KNOW YOUR MINE!" you feel like she's singing that knowing her wish from "burning up" has come true.

That's the only version I knew until now. I should pick up the S/T I guess? xp

everyone's seen this but it hasn't appeared here yet

Vogue at no.10, you swine
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:07 (thirteen years ago)
I shouldn't be surprised someone would only know "Burning Up" as a Ciccone Youth song but still O_O
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 19:08 (thirteen years ago)
This poll is starting to remind me of the 45y.o.-ish women I saw traveling in packs ...
Hahaha oh
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:08 (thirteen years ago)
TOOOO LOW!
― C: (crüt), Monday, 11 March 2013 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
my #5 - favorite part might be the luxuriously slow tempo, and of course the intro. And while she's obviously saying that he is her lucky star, the clear message is that HE is the lucky one for being the star that she has noticed...
― skip, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
Only three of her 80s singles didn't make the Top 50 and I can't even remember how two of them went. Gambler? Look of Love?
― Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 11 March 2013 19:10 (thirteen years ago)
"I'm a famed high-school dropout, so don't believe anything they tell you"--thank you, Sarah Palin.
― clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:11 (thirteen years ago)
'gambler's the other song from vision quest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqTsP7gTPIw
'look of love' was only a single in europe, third single from who's that girl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HGfwg5OBAs
video is literally just random clips from the movie not even attempting to match up to the song
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:13 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think 108 BPM is "luxuriously slow"?
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 19:14 (thirteen years ago)
Bit late for this but Holiday Rap needed to be posted upthread.
― aztec table rapper (seandalai), Monday, 11 March 2013 19:14 (thirteen years ago)
"gambler" not making the list is a fucking scandal
i guess not enough ppl know about it? i'm just assuming that can be the only reason because nothing else makes sense to me
― prolego, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:15 (thirteen years ago)
I don't know how I'd never heard of Holiday Rap, all its contemporaries were my jams as a nipper
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:16 (thirteen years ago)
I only just reacquainted myself with Gambler by watching the video and it's barely a song. It's more a sketch.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:16 (thirteen years ago)
a very suave, urbane nipper
It was posted in the voting thread.
― ArchCarrier, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:17 (thirteen years ago)
not a single in the united states either
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:17 (thirteen years ago)
yeah I just compared to the rest of the songs on the album and it's not particularly slow at all...oops. Maybe it's the emphasis on the downbeat that makes it sounds like there's more space there and the distance between the words in the verses. "Shine..on me...wher - ever - you - are..."
― skip, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:18 (thirteen years ago)
John Lennon: "I came out of the fuckin' sticks to take over the world."
Dick Clark (clip above): "What are your dreams, what's left?"Madonna: "To rule the world."
― clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 19:18 (thirteen years ago)
that intro of "Lucky Star" is one of my favorite things that ever happened in music
