Interesting tho that "Deeper and Deeper," presumably, scored higher than "Vogue."

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

ah that's the song I was forgetting

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

Motown, then Stax. Will be a super fun time on ilm, imo. xp

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

"Burning Up" is not better than "Vogue," "Express Yourself," "Justify My Love," etc.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

except for that it is

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

yes it is

xp

C: (crüt), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

I'm seriously burning up, you guys.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

motown poll needs some tight definition of terms, parameters, imo. i'd make that thing strictly up thru early jackson five, whitfield/strong, etc. having 'motownphilly' and mary jane girls pop up in between mary wells and martha reeves is gonna be off imo.

09. "HOLIDAY" from Madonna (1983) [30 votes, 753 points, 3 first place votes]

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

this is the pure quality section of the poll IMO

I'm not even annoyed by the inevitable placement of "Borderline" over the other s/t singles

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

Was hoping that would be #1.

clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

something i had no idea had an official video a week ago:

balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

I don't have a constant favorite from the s/t, but most of the time it's Holiday.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

got them arms up lol

balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

I was going to trash some of the other songs that placed above Vogue but I voted for Deeper and Deeper...and Borderline...and Holiday...etc

skip, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

This poll is starting to remind me of the 45y.o.-ish women I saw traveling in packs at Madonna's MDMA concert, all dressed in their Desperately Seeking Susan finery, all invariably displaying looks of disappointment on their faces with each three-story blood spatter gunshot during "Gang Bang," all trying to turn their frowns upside down at her sad cabaret ballad version of "Like a Virgin."

this is the pure quality section of the poll IMO

B- trolling

That "Holiday" video is like looking at Plan 9 from Outer Space or something.

clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:22 (thirteen years ago)

Seriously, those women were all singing to themselves "It would be so nice ... if the last 20 years didn't happen at all here tonight plz thx."

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:22 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't vote for 'holiday' as it's one of those like 'vogue' where you almost forget it's a song as well as a piece of pop iconography but i probably should have. tho it's done well enough without my endorsement i suppose.

"holiday" is nice and all but it didn't even cross my mind to vote for it. it's not a madonna song that makes me ~feel things~

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

I hate "Vogue", top ten is way too high, glad to see that "Where Life Begins" will place higher than it

Euler, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

fuck it, Holiday is TOO LOW!

g simmel, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

That Truth or Dare "Holiday" made the whole film worthwhile for me.

clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

I have never seen "Truth or Dare"

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

It r good.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

it's really really fun. i think reality tv has made alot of what was novel about it at the time routine but that tour was fantastic and it's a great portrait of her at peak cultural importance.

balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

Lex otm. Love the T&D version though.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:30 (thirteen years ago)

Watching Warren Beatty squirm--"What have gotten myself into here?...Lee Strasberg, help!"--is fun.

clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

xp Thanks for the company Euler. Vogue annoyed me then and it annoys me now.

08. "BURNING UP" from Madonna (1983) [29 votes, 756 points, 3 first place votes]

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

warren & madonna seems like total checking off boxes on a list somewhere on both party's parts, such an obv couple in the public sense, such an unlikely one in terms of the actual personalities.

balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

Oh wow. I love that song!

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

TOO LOW

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

lex OTM

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

(I was one of the #1 votes)

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

it was my #2 and nearly #1; considering what my #1 is, that's pretty amazing

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

The guitars are fierce!

possibly delusional but always credit madonna for that final push getting the stooges into the rrhof

balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

The disco-metal of somebody's dreams...not mine--but I like the chorus.

clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

The Stooges-Madonna thing was a two-way gift, probably--they made her induction almost okay for those who were appalled. (Will resist the temptation to characterize such people.)

clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

I'm right back to being 10 and playing "Burning Up" on repeat

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

Didn't vote because I don't Madonna enough (unfortunately) but my favorite has been Into the Groove. cue laughs*

Amazing thread, superb primer and thank you all.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

does anyone even hear "burning up" as a love song to an individual rather than a mission statement to the world? it's awe-inspiring

prolego, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

no one with any sense is going to laugh at someone picking "Into The Groove" as their favorite Madonna song

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

'into the groove' was clear favorite for #1 going in and still i think

balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

into the groove and live to tell are the #1 and #2 in this poll.

scott seward, Monday, 11 March 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

probably right
