then again if a younger singer had done this track they probably would have sped it up even more and made it way worse.

i don't know about your history or career of wrong tbh, you seem like a nice person, i just bristle at sugar being more highly valued than vinegar in virtually any context!

I really can't see mainstream US radio giving "Hung Up" a chance if it wasn't a Madonna single
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i'd come to think of myself as preferring 'sorry' and thinking 'hung up' a lesser cousin of jlc's 'what you waiting for' remix but listening to confessions last week it really did strike me what a monster it is, maybe the last great gasp of that french filter - that later fade when you hear it turn the corner and the abba hook coming in, my god.
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)
lol La Lachera thank you for qualifying that, i was worried you had some secret long-running issue w/ m
― some dude, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:34 (thirteen years ago)
xpost - yeah i'd also thought of 'hung up' sort of precursing the pop edm era but sonically there's not alot of similarities to my ears.
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)
confessions works despite madonna in one sense - you can already hear the stiffness in her voice that wrecks all her work since, and lyrically she really doesn't say much of interest - even "hung up" is just a standard scenario lyrically. JLC is the reason it's a monster, and the reason the rest of the album is worth much at all.
on the other hand i can't really imagine anyone else singing those songs, or how i'd have preferred them to be performed.
― r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)
Hung Up and JML were my #2 and #4 choices. Looks like the Top 10 is going to be more about obvious 80s hits than I'd hoped. And no Sorry in the rundown at all.
― Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)
my favorite part of "Hung Up" is the part from "Gimme Gimme Gimme" and imo every other part of the Abba song is better than every other part of the Madonna song
― some dude, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

Your loyalty to Grant Hart has no place in this thread, LL.
― clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)
ughhh this is one of the reasons i hate the term "EDM" so much, it lumps all electronic dance music into one umbrella. there's really barely any connection between what JLC was doing in the mid-00s and the stuff in the charts now.
― r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)
OTM re EDM

"the stiffness in her voice that wrecks all her work since"
which is so unfortunate, you would think after 30 years of doing this she would know what's going on and figure out a way to wring some interest out of what's left of her voice.
― skip, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:38 (thirteen years ago)
It didn't really. The song got most of its chart points from digital downloads.
― LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

This. Though after "Express Yourself" at #19, I'm not sure of much anymore.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:39 (thirteen years ago)
EDM manages to be a worse term than "electronica"
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
i really, really hate it when i see critics legitimising the phrase "EDM" by using it at all
― r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
Like, 6 of the top 10 are really going to be from S/T?
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
(Sorry, 5.)
I honestly don't think it's the stiffness over her voice that makes "Gimme All Your Luvin'" a terrible song, btw
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
well yeah it's not JUST the stiffness in her voice
― r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:42 (thirteen years ago)
i think her delivery is fine in "Hung Up," i just get nothing out of the vocal melody
― some dude, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
Hung Up in my top ten. She figured out how to use the opera chops.
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
i use edm to mean specifically obama first term radio dance pop, it's more useful than electronica ever was in that the stuff it's used to describe - brostep, jersey shore house, 'starships' - is generally heard in the same places, etc, it wasn't like electronica lumping together dnb and big beat and idm and techno and house.
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:44 (thirteen years ago)
prefer 'sorry' to 'hung up' but that's not gonna make it now is it? great remixes on that one too.
― So: The Answers (or something), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
xp You don't think EDM is a valid term for what's happening right now with Skrillex et al? I think it's useful as long as it's not retrospectively applied to all electronic dance music ever. Stuart Price's work on Confessions is way richer and cleverer than any of the Guetta generation.
Oh, post overlap. I agree with balls re: EDM time frame. lol at "Jersey Shore house"
― Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
JF i love you for putting the Shep remix of "Express" in the Spotify playlist
― some dude, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
Help for the clueless: EDM = electronic dance music?
― clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:47 (thirteen years ago)
yes
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:47 (thirteen years ago)
"EDM" is just a massively stupid term, "jersey shore house" for one is far more useful
― r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:48 (thirteen years ago)
and yeah i've seen people apply "EDM" to pretty much any electronic dance music
EDM sounds like a foam or jelly
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:49 (thirteen years ago)
'edm' is a stupid term but tbf doesn't begin to approach the stupidity of 'idm'.
― balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:49 (thirteen years ago)
Electronic Dance Madonna.

It made me think of the jazz label with all those Jack DeJohnette albums.
― clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:51 (thirteen years ago)
Lex, there comes a point with all genre names where you have to accept that it has a clear meaning to a lot of people and it's no longer a question of "legitimising" it or otherwise. Shoegazing, krautrock, trip hop - these aren't the best possible names but we know what they mean, and now when a critic says EDM I know what they're describing.

Man, she sings the hell out of PDP. One of her best early voxals.
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)
actually switched up my ballot after sending it to make room for "papa don't preach". she sells the narrative so well
― r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 17:05 (thirteen years ago)
Why again was it religious groups had issues with this song? Did they not get past the title? It's about KEEPING MY BABY.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 March 2013 17:06 (thirteen years ago)
for some reason I always paired this with Billie Jean - great storytelling.
