yeah, there was a massive clusterfuck around this for a while

Not only that, Alex Moulton was also kind enough to fill ILM in on the details of it's release (which was way behind the hype around this album here).

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:17 (fifteen years ago) link

ahhh alex moulton! i remember loving that for about a month, but it didn't stick. i will return to it.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:20 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it's definitely one of those records where you binge on it for weeks and then never feel like playing again.

Disco/Very (Roz), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I honestly can't get past the cover.

ilxor, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:25 (fifteen years ago) link

You sure that's not a Dragonforce cover? ;)

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:26 (fifteen years ago) link

OK, so the disappointing Sebastien Tellier and Girl Talk albums were starting to worry me - but I'm now totally sold on the Alex Moulton. (That's "sold" as in "just paid money for".)

this shit rules. he's just getting better with age. i'm sort of in awe. there's guitar magic toward the end of the title song that gives quicksilver messenger service's "calvary" a run for the money. i'm probably mental but i'm starting to think of pavement as his buffalo springfield

Nice, this was a great album from a guy who i thought might not have one of those in him anymore.

Holy fucking poop on a stick that is hilarious! xxxpost

ilxor, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah the Malkmus album was pretty good. Two #1 votes! Impressive.

ilxor, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I had given up on him. Maybe I need to check this out (still not raising my hopes too high though)

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Don't. It's still hippie jamz.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I can dig that if it's good hippie jamz

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:42 (fifteen years ago) link

i only voted for three albums. i don't understand the people who vote for 20 albums but don't vote for tracks, that is insane

OK that makes more sense the second time I read it, but I just wanna note that I mostly listen to albums. I had to narrow my list down from 45 of the nominations that I at least liked! Working in radio helps with this a lot, I think.

Also a note to Mr. Neuname, I placed Paavoharju very high, it should show up later I hope. Listened to it again just after dinner tonight, fucking fantastic.

malkmus and solange!!!!!

im really surprised malkmus made this, and it was about in the middle of my list iirc. i really love the way the guy is growing up on record - songs like 'out of reaches' are so direct and affecting by his standards, i can't imagine him writing them ten years ago. i was in love with this back when it came out (best since 'wowee' etc) when it came out, overlistened, and then got back into it around voting time. i didnt post to ilx when this was released, but i dont really recall a lot of people stanning for this, so i'm glad it's getting some recognition. also, i'm rather certain this was not the 48th album in p4k's list (dont think it was on it at all)

solange's album was really solid, but wasn't packed with knockouts; like lex said, it's not going to be anyone's #1 (which apparently it wasn't). TONY was the first song i loved on it--the overall emotional ambivalence (while maintaining self-faith) really echoed what i was going through at the time, and it was exactly what i wanted to hear. of course, 'sandcastle disco' is the best song on this by a mile, as i found out later. totally forgot about it...top ten song of the year IMO

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I used to love guitar noodling, but I've felt estranged from the form for some years. Hippie Jamz criticism aside, is it really worth trying out the Malkmus album? I could do with the re-engagement with shredding.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:49 (fifteen years ago) link

More Paavoharju love from me, too -- in fact I voted it my No.1, so it will do pretty well I think.

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm listening to it now, and damn I wish I heard this a few months ago.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago) link

eh, if you're categorically against it, i suppose you won't like a few songs. try the shorter pop songs first ('cold son', 'gardenia', 'we can't help you'), then go for the more songy, kinda-jammy-but-still-tight-and-condensed 'out of reaches' (a grower, my personal favorite) and 'wicked wanda'. if youre feeling it, give the longer ones a shot: 'real emotional trash' (really great once it gets going), 'elmo delmo', 'hopscotch willie' and 'dragonfly pie'. 'baltimore' is probably the weakest song here, but still not a bad song.
this is from a malkmus stan, of course...if you love him i dont see how you couldnt like this record

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't think the malkmus album is jammy at all. some of the songs are just long form and multi-part, not like prog but compositionally coming from a similar place (the mid to late 70s) and obviously allowing time for plenty of guitar leads. it's all pretty structured though.

― Lostandfound,

Good stuff! I think any of my top 10 could've been no1 in other weeks.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 04:02 (fifteen years ago) link

not categorically against it at all. I was actually a huge fan of the s/t and Pig Lib, it's just in recent years I've gone off guitar-heroship. I never really felt Face the Truth at all. Now I'm kind of wanting to get back into something like that again, and perhaps this is the record to do so. Not on Spotify, unfortunately. :(

Yes, I was going to say almost the same thing. It seemed almost strange that I voted that record No.1 -- not that it didn't deserve it, just that a lot of other albums deserved it too!

when you said 'listening now' were you referring to the malk record or Paavoharju? if you're looking for a 'Real Emotional Trash' stream, the whole thing is on his myspace

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 04:22 (fifteen years ago) link

sorry, meant Paavoharju. Cheers for the myspace link. Will give it a listen soon.

I guess if Solange placed already that means I can stop holding out any shred of hope for The Foreign Exchange.

gonna be a long hard road waiting for Badu to show up

some dude, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:06 (fifteen years ago) link

this is a dope list so far - reatard and alex moulton are really really good. moulton is definitely an ILM pick

nascar jesus (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:11 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i'm (kinda pleastantly) surprised @ reatard. and re: badu, it's going to be a long road because there's no way she isn't top 2.

need to check out moulton if all you dudes are repping

I think any of my top 10 could've been no1 in other weeks.

Exactly the reason I refuse to rank my top 20 year end list. It's hard enough narrowing it down to that!

and re: badu, it's going to be a long road because there's no way she isn't top 2 5.

Fixed, sadly.

ilxor, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:49 (fifteen years ago) link

dude i dunno i think lex was otm, it's going to come down to her and portishead. idk maybe fleet foxes will make a run...who else is going to be ahead of erykah?

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:52 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the Badu album will be like "Happy House" and overperform because those who feel strongly about it feel VERY strongly about it. (haha those were both my #1s)

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:54 (fifteen years ago) link

So basically, I don't think top 2 is out of the question at all.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:55 (fifteen years ago) link

My top 5 predictions:

5. The Bug
4. Vampire Weekend
3. Erykah Badu
2. TVOTR
1. Portishead

Shallow Gravy (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 07:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Sounds reasonable, though I'd replace The Bug with something else. Maybe Hercules & Love Affair?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 07:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I have no problem with Vampire Weekend doing well, they are the first big indie band since the Strokes that I really really like.

hey Alex Moulton was my #1.....didn't my ballot get included? :(((

that would prob explain why like none of my tracks showed up in the other poll too right? :(((

unaustralian (jabba hands), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 08:57 (fifteen years ago) link

solange!!! brilliant. that album switches itself up on you, it turns out to be lovable for its trad motown pastiches rather than its self-conscious experimental aspirations (luckily the former way outweigh the latter). she's a great songwriter and has a charming lightness of touch in her delivery - all the ingredients are ~just right~ i think. 'sandcastle disco', 'would've been the 1', 't.o.n.y.' and '6 o'clock blues' are the standouts for me...

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 09:13 (fifteen years ago) link

(also, great videos! i was surprised none of the solange singles placed, actually.)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 09:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I kinda hate the "Sandcastle Disco" video. It might as well scream "big in the UK" at the top of its lungs.

My bet for the 'hang on have I lost some ballots?' album is WEEZY.
