What is that arnold palmer thing and why does the link go to an eagles video?
it's all part of an elaborate scheme that me and Linydloo Ronstadt cooked up last night in bed

It feels like this strategy of connecting with fans and plugging into your base and discovering the future of music is 99% branding yourself as the kind of person who is great at connecting with fans and 1% actual connecting with fans.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 20:01 (thirteen years ago)
well, in general, "connecting" is typically about branding things as "connections."
― s.clover, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 20:39 (thirteen years ago)
if only there were a way for an artist to connect with their audience
― No, not sinister (Austerity Ponies), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 20:50 (thirteen years ago)
there is, it's called "Twitter"

seems like she is doing a lot of connecting, whether it's selling wine bottles or sleeping in their houses, tbfair
― zero dark (s1ocki), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 20:59 (thirteen years ago)
or asking for their free labour
if anything, she's connecting too much

thinking of ways musicians used to connect with their audience, and I guess twitter spreads fewer stds
― No, not sinister (Austerity Ponies), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 21:17 (thirteen years ago)
is there a succinct phrase for what we're looking at here? this thing of looking at someone and immediately feeling embarrassment and horror and rage at what they're up to but being unable to explain why that is, isn't it obvious?, while other people are totally enthralled and inspired. "emperor's new clothes" doesn't really cover it
i tried listening to this but kind of had to tune it out. fwiw the "i had an amazing drummer, i wrote all the songs" doesn't sound THAT bad in context.
― goole, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 21:53 (thirteen years ago)
the first thing that popped into my head was "fight/flight" which is obviously wrong, but still: lol
― "Bellini." (DJP), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 21:55 (thirteen years ago)
that combination of narcissism and the fact that this interaction and sharing and experience is not framed in a generous, democratic manner but in a way that ensures she's the center of attention and it's more important for her to experience this than anyone else to whom she includes in her 'art' (and the reservoir into which money flows) feels sort of randian.
― christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)
randy probably describes the enthralled fans too

adam phillips:
'But Winnicott then refers, in a brief paragraph that contradicts the rest of his paper, to a figure he calls the "creative artist," who, in a way he doesn't explain, is apparently exempt from the benign circle he has described, who has in fact dispensed with this circle altogether. For this person reparation, and the gratitude and sense of indebtedness it implies, is irrelevant, simply the creation of an obstacle. Characterized by his ruthlessness, the artist's particular kind of socialization "obviates the need for guilt feeling and the associated reparative and restitutive activity that forms the basis of ordinary constructive work." Obviate is an interesting word here, meaning as it does "to meet on the way, to prevent or dispose of in advance, to forestall." The artist's life then, which "obviates the need for guilt feeling," is one in which he has noticed guilt but has found ways of preempting it. He has refused to feel guilty, or rather, to feel hampered by it. Winnicott concludes his eleven-and-a-half-line section "The Creative Artist" in an appropriately tantalizing way: "Ordinary guilt-ridden people find this bewildering yet they have a sneaking regard for ruthlessness that does in fact, in such circumstances, achieve more than guilt-driven labour."'

I really tried to watch the TED Talk with an open mind...but the whole bringing out the crate followed by the theatrical pause really got my hackles up and I only made it as far as "I didn't use to make my living from playing music" before I had to shut it off.― chr1sb3singer, Monday, 4 March 2013 16:52 (3 days ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

that Winnicott bit is fascinating and difficult stuff (which which on first reflection I'd disagree just instinctively; aren't plenty of artists driven by feelings of guilt?), the very sort of thing AP sort of doesn't want to engage
