I assume the entire album is going to be that 15 seconds looped ad infinitum anyway
― C: (crüt), Monday, 4 March 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago) link
i would probably be ok with that

I wouldn't, really

Sounds promising to me, once they stay towards disco/pop and away from blurping techno then I trust them.
i feel exactly the opposite, HAA excepted
― the late great, Monday, 4 March 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link
HAA has its moments IMO ("Steam Machine", "The Brainwasher", "Technologic")
― my super interesting Kant story (DJP), Monday, 4 March 2013 19:09 (eleven years ago) link
i think the problem is it has a lot of good moments but then stretches those moments out a little too far w/o enough variation to keep it interesting
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 04:41 (eleven years ago) link
lol and you're saying this next one is going to be shit?
― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 09:45 (eleven years ago) link
I love blurbing techno/house, but IMO Daft Punk have never been particularly good at it. Disco/vocal/pop house seems to be their forte, so hopefully they're getting back to that.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 09:46 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah that's my view.
― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 09:48 (eleven years ago) link
Apart from Homework I guess, but that was a different matter. I just don't trust their sense of direction with harder stuff as much as I trust them to make a good disco record.
the 1997 mix cd is pretty tough and v v good
― Crackle Box, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 09:56 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, true. just like how they'd dip back into that world now, i don't know.
― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 10:16 (eleven years ago) link
so are parts of the 2007 one, i see that album as the nail in the coffin for that sound. everytime i put it on i'm surprised by how good (and moving, at times) it is.
i always figured HAA was a reaction to that whole 'trying to be daft punk' copycat thing that's persisted for the last 10 years or so. especially the way things were heading around 2004-5 with certain scenes getting bigger, louder, brasher, less conceptual, less futuristic-techno-robot-utopia-celebration, more mid 00s-anxietyridden-dystopia. i find a lot of that boys noise/justice/simian mobile disco type scene really ugly.
i actually really like how little happens on HAA and how 'lo-fi' it is. it's not like they didn't give the fans what they wanted all along with alive 2007 anyway.
― Crackle Box, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 10:41 (eleven years ago) link
this loop is funny though, it's not really giving much away. i don't really like the drums on it but it does has that magical daft punk sunshine vibe, which is a good sign imo.
i'm really hoping the morodor collab is some kind of 10 minute disco arpeggio prog odyssey

This loop, for all we know, is a snippet of a breakdown on one song. Do we know if Nile actually played on everything or just dropped in to play on some stuff?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 13:50 (eleven years ago) link

― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 14:11 (eleven years ago) link
But didn't HAA essentially encourage more of that type of sound?
― MarkoP, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 14:11 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah I raised an eye at that, HAA basically *is* that sound.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 14:14 (eleven years ago) link
HAA was maybe more tongue in cheek than it seemed? i dunno - it's kind of a crap album but in the context of Alive 2007 it's very good. In the same way I don't think Homework really sounds too good these days after seeing what they did with those tunes later on. Discovery still sounds good though.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 14:41 (eleven years ago) link
HAA was a practical joke AFAIC
― dog latin, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:02 (eleven years ago) link
i listened to discovery all the way through for the first time in what must be years yesterday and it sounded glorious. i forgot how many songs were on it!

― dog latin, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

― zero dark (s1ocki), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:16 (eleven years ago) link
I always skup One More Time. Never enjoyed it a great deal TBH.
― dog latin, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:26 (eleven years ago) link
more like one less time
― zero dark (s1ocki), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:26 (eleven years ago) link
tbh Alive 2007 ruined pretty much all DP for me since I only want to hear the version of "One More Time" that goes into "Aerodynamic", or the "Superheroes" that runs with "Human After All". I think "Digital Love" and maybe "Da Funk" were the only tracks spared from this (the former because it wasn't on Alive nor would it have fit, the latter doesn't really mix well with others). In that respect HAA felt like an "expansion pack" release, none of those tracks were really good on their own but damn do they mix well with everything else.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:30 (eleven years ago) link
Shit, I've had Alive 2007 hanging around since... must be 2007, and I still haven't given it a proper spin. Will change that tonight.
― dog latin, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:36 (eleven years ago) link
it still feels odd to me since I had downloaded their infamous Coachella set and that summer I had coworkers who loved DP so we listened to that all the freakin time - when Alive came out it was basically the same but with some minor differences so it always felt a little weird to me
― frogbs, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:41 (eleven years ago) link
Alive 2007 is pretty much the only Daft Punk album I listen to as an album.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 15:42 (eleven years ago) link
Listened to Alive 2007 at 6am on Friday night/saturday morning at full blast whilst high on life/beers/cocaine and can confirm that it is still GLORIOUS.
