TED: Ideas Worth Shredding

gentle german fatherly voice (President Keyes), Sunday, 3 March 2013 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

I really tried to watch the TED Talk with an open mind...but the whole bringing out the crate followed by the theatrical pause really got my hackles up and I only made it as far as "I didn't use to make my living from playing music" before I had to shut it off.

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 4 March 2013 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

That's just what I need, ten thousand more buskers on my commute. Thanks, Amanda Palmer.

No, not sinister (Austerity Ponies), Monday, 4 March 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

in this brave new economy, everybody will just give me stuff because i ask for it. i am a visionary!

s.clover, Monday, 4 March 2013 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

Every rock star should be required to spend a fixed number of hours as a painted public statue before they can ask for money. Like community service or flight hours or something.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 March 2013 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

I have to admit, I've never just gone on Twitter and straight asked for money. It's so stupid it might just work...

after describing how a house full of honduran immigrants slept on couches so her band could take the beds, the mom thanking palmer the next morning ("in her broken english") for staying there and making music her daughter enjoys: "and i'm thinking: this is fair."

"And meanwhile, I was touring locally and playing in nightclubs with my band, The Dresden Dolls. It was just me on piano and a genius drummer - I wrote the songs - and eventually we started making enough money that I could quit being a statue."

how's life, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

made for a dull gig, being a statue. Thank god for the drummer!

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

It could be that she mentioned that she wrote the songs to differentiate the Dresden Dolls from a cover band?

The honduran vignette, it has been bothering me for days. Fuck this lady.

I often hear about how too many Americans have a "sense of entitlement."

It's almost always just bullshit Right Wing talking points.

Unless there actually are a bunch of Americans who are like Amanda Palmer... In which case I weep for our country.

it's basically a full-on no-win situation

She should think about going back to being a statue.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

at this point she could just tweet for someone to make a statue of her

da croupier, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

can we go back for a bit to where she auctioned of shit that she nibbled on to her faithful followers?

I'm kind of at the point where I can't even blame her as much as I want to because there are a shit ton of ppl buying into her bullshit and making her sketchy view of the world into a reality

or "make the market think they want bullshit from me" if I'm being honest

I've been doing my best to not actual watch this TED Talk or read anything new about her cos the last time i did she was exploiting kids that had committed suicide and it was pretty much the last straw for me. She's a horrible narcissist.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

i'm presuming everyone's familiar with the "1000 true fans" model?
http://www.kk.org/thetechnium/archives/2008/03/1000_true_fans.php
this was old news in 2008. She's basically just restating the premise but personalizing it in her own special hugs way

arnold palmer's open letter to roberta flack:

To Roberta Flack

I was quite surprised when I heard “"Killing Me Softly with His Song" on the radio and learned that the song describes me as being “famously rude, combative, abrasive, embarrassing, insane bigot, best left forgotten.”

At the Atlantic City Country Club I still have the reputation for being a wise, brash and determined gentleman who doesn’t throw his clubs, drink or curse and attends mass every day before going to work, where I am highly regarded as the golf professional. I thought I was familiar with your hit single ‘"Killing Me Softly with His Song", but I must have somehow missed the “bigot” and parts “best left forgotten.”

Your description of me as “bigoted” may have once been justified, as it was supported by Walter Travis, who won the US Amateur at the Atlantic City Country Club before he won the British Amateur, but was so rudely treated by the British he refused to return to defend his title, especially after his center-shafted putter was retroactively banned by the Royal and Ancient Order of what he considered Snobs.

Walter Hagen, my friend and colleague, confirmed their view when he took exception to the British rule that golf pros were not permitted in the clubhouse dining room, and refused to play until the rules were changed. And John B. Kelly, another ACCC member and Olympic rowing champion, was banned from participating in the Henley rowing regatta because he was a bricklayer and not a considered a gentleman.

It wasn’t me who had bad manners and had to be taught a lesson, it was the British and UK professionals who thought they could win the US Open trophy just by showing up, and so it was left to me – the wise, brash and determined golf legend – to teach them a lesson. I did it again at Shawnee in 1966, shortly before the U.S. Open at Brookline, when I handily won the Shawnee tournament by eight strokes.

That’s when I gave my famous speech, promising to keep the US Open trophy in America, which generated international interest in the game and took golf off the sports pages and put it on the front pages of every newspaper in the United States and the British Empire. That speech set the stage for the showdown at Brookline, which was called “the Greatest Game” not because a local amateur won it, but because I was there and I am famous. The international spirit inflamed by my“combative” style can still be felt today during Walker, Ryder and Curtis Cup tournaments, and other “friendly competitions between nations,” especially between the USA and UK.

I hope that you will correct your crude and rude mischaracterization of me in your hit single "Killing Me Softly with His Song", and the true story is someday told of the great American golf champion who sparked and inspired today’s international competitions.

if one wanted to risk sounding like a bret easton ellis character, one could argue that by allow people pay to engage with her, rather than pay to experience her art, she's actually letting people pay for what benefits them - interacting with someone whose art they enjoy. In a sense, she's acknowledging that there's no guarantee that listening to her music is inherently rewarding to all, while it's definitely rewarding for a fan to drive down and give her a neti pot or buy her toenail clippings or whatever.
