Another collab I would love to hear is between Thomas Bangalter and his dad, it's weird that this hasn't already happened? Daniel Bangalter/Vangarde has written and produced many awesome disco tunes that are better than any Daft Punk track.
― Tuomas, Friday, 1 March 2013 09:57 (thirteen years ago)
That may well be true but I just have a reflex cringe at the idea of any musician collaborating with their dad.
― Matt DC, Friday, 1 March 2013 09:58 (thirteen years ago)
But there are many examples of this producing great records! Frank & Nancy Sinatra, Serge & Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Staple Singers, etc...

When electronic musicians release albums with several big-name guest stars, the results tend to be pretty meh, right? Psyence Fiction, Fat of the Land, Saturnz Return, etc... Seems this stuff is always less than the sum of its parts, or has someone actually managed to pull it off with great results?
Basement Jaxx's Kish Kash?
― MarkoP, Friday, 1 March 2013 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
Ha, excellent point. I'm not sure Daft are close enough to their prime to give us a Kish Kash at this point, but we'll see.

I take it that's not a sample? That would be interesting, if they've gone straight to their roots and doing straightforward disco now... I wouldn't mind that, because IMO "I Love You More" > "Digital Love".

guy from Aeroplane *is shaking*
Aeroplane shared a link.16 hours agoMe & The Robots
One day, a friend of mine gave me a record she got for her birthday but didn't like. That record was Daft Punk's first album " Homework " . I came home, and played the thing. It changed something in my brain and left me with an energy and an excitement I hadn't felt before. So I played it again, and I've been playing it for the past 15 years. One week after that I stopped my Nirvana cover band to buy a computer and a sound card. I was 15 and that's how I got into electronic music.
Since that day, all my efforts went into trying to make a record that would make people feel the same way, that would make ME feel the same way. Do Thomas and Guy-Man feel like that when they listen to their own records ? I hope so, if not they're missing out. Much like my other heroes Kraftwerk, they get perfection out of simplicity , which is the real challenge. They are like a magician ( no pun intended ) that reveals his tricks to you but still you stare at him without understanding. I've tried to crack the code, copy them, tried to sound like them until I realized it's not the way to go ( I couldn't anyway… ) and I had to try to come up with my own identity. There is something so special and specific about the way they sound.
All their records were influential, the artworks, the videos, let's not even talk about their live show which is the best thing dance music brought to us. How can you compete with that ? You can't. And you shouldn't. They've been criticized for the sampling ( even by me, I regret it ) but thing is I wouldn't have been able to come up with One More Time, which to me is the best example of how to use a sample to create something new.
Today a 16 second video got me shaking. Physically shaking. I can't wait. I missed them. They know how to push our buttons and how to create incredible buzz and expectations and always match it . Nile Rodgers on the guitar ? We've known that for a while but hearing it sound exactly like what you dreamt of is an incredible feeling.
Daft Punk is the reason why I want to stop making music. They are also the reason why I want to keep making music. It gives me the hope that one day I can hit that spot and make someone feel like I felt today and 15 years ago.
They are back. Thomas, Guy-Man thanks for everything, and even if we've never met I love you both.
― piscesx, Monday, 4 March 2013 11:58 (thirteen years ago)

They are released a "drumless" version of this album. Seems pointless to me, but maybe the drums were a late addition to the album? might as well just put up all the mixing tracks and see what people can do.

I'm weirdly and unexpectedly really digging this version. Sounds like the best produced muzak ever, highlighting stuff i'd never noticed on the original. A bit of an odd flex but nails what it's meant to achieve - making people listen to the album with fresh ears
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 17 November 2023 16:21 (two years ago)

― Paul Ponzi, Friday, 17 November 2023 16:50 (two years ago)
Unsurprisingly the uptempo stuff doesn't work that well - Lose Yourself to Dance is agonizingly long and dull - but the maudlin stuff at the beginning sounds really nice, in a 1986 aging yuppie kinda way
