Purchased at Target or Walgreens?

Never mind that her kind of songwriting has been part of pop music since time immemorial - think of the speculation as to which Stones' girlfriend Rolling Stones songs such as "Ruby Tuesday" or 'Angie" were "really about," not to mention the kiss-and-tell mythology of albums such as Rumours or Blood on the Tracks - the perception of Taylor as Serial Dater Who Writes Mean-Spirited Songs About Her Boyfriends is threatening to become her defining image.

Well, Taylor is a standardly pretty young woman, so obviously our culture has A Problem with thinking it's ok for her to do it.

also dropping a Brit accent in her Grammy thing was fucking hilarious and fit the spirit of a song that's meant to take juvenile glee ("weEEEE!" as you slide away from him) in not being with your ex ever ever. so troll on, Swift.

finding this less-than-obvious in light of her sales and airplay tbh

Quote was re: image/perception, not sales.

Taylor took to the DJ booth at the Universal afterparty (held at pop-up Soho House party on Princes Street) and played the following girl power anthems; Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing), Adele - Rolling In The Deep, Kelis - Milkshake, and Eve ft. Gwen Stefani - Blow Ya Mind.

Even by Zales standards, that's sad. (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 February 2013 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

In the April issue of Vanity Fair, Swift tells the mag she’s not “some clingy, insane, desperate girlfriend,” calling that idea of her “fictional.”

She says, “If you want some big revelation, since 2010 I have dated exactly two people,” referring to Conor Kennedy and Harry Styles.

Swift notes, “The fact that there are slide shows of a dozen guys that I either hugged on a red carpet or met for lunch or wrote a song with… it’s just kind of ridiculous,” explaining, “It’s why I have to avoid the tabloid part of our culture, because they turn you into a fictional character.”

Asked if she truly is boy crazy, as much of the public perceives her to be, the pop star responds, “For a female to write about her feelings, and then be portrayed as some clingy, insane, desperate girlfriend in need of making you marry her and have kids with her, I think that’s taking something that potentially should be celebrated — a woman writing about her feelings in a confessional way — that’s taking it and turning it and twisting it into something that is frankly a little sexist.”

I love hip-hop! The first song I memorized was “Fireman” by Lil Wayne. Ever since then…it’s Nicki Minaj, Wiz Khalifa, the Game. When I was in high school, my boyfriend and I would drive around and he’d always point to this neighborhood where Young Buck lived. We would drive and look at his cars and be like, “Oh my gawd! Those cars are so cool! I wonder if he’s in there!”

I don't know much about Taylor Swift beyond the fact that there's somebody out there named Taylor Swift, and that she's liked by both my female students and rock-critic friends. So this is not meant as a knock on her in any way. But I thought the quote I read from Amy Poehler today was the funniest thing I've come across in quite a while:

"I feel bad if she was upset. I am a feminist, and she is a young and talented girl. That being said, I do agree I am going to hell. But for other reasons. Mostly boring tax stuff."

bless tay, i doubt she'll ever make a GREAT video, she does everything so obviously when it comes to marketing & visuals, but at least she's endearing here

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

I approve of the cat ears.

toulows-lautrec (how's life), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

i think the dude she dances briefly with on a table marks the first appearance of a non-white person in a taylor swift video

quite like that she jumps away from the hot dude into the swimming pool at the end

i have come round to this song because it is to young lesbians what "you belong with me" was to young gays

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

i wish someone would tell me that the girls in that video are her real-life friends because the thought of them acting like they are having "real" fun is off-putting to me for some reason. why, i do not know. i get the concept of acting and hiring actors. but it would be more fun if these were real friends.

this comment is like when i tell my wife i wish someone would invent a way for us to shower without having to actually shower.

i do love her and the song, tho.

alpine static, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

find it hard to imagine taylor leading a gang of gal pals tbh

According to this article, they are: http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/taylor-swift-debuts-new-music-video-for-22-dances-with-real-life-best-friends-2013133

I also approve of the cat ears.

video is fun

argue that "you belong with me" is a great video, "safe & sound" her least obvious most directly gorgeous, "ours" really wonderfully shot and funny despite ugh conclusion

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

oh yeah and "the story of us" is obvious as hell but her performance in that video sells it

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

22 video makes me want her to pull a Queen Latifah and do a sitcom with real-life galpals Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, and Lena Dunham. #i'mgladi'vegotmygirls

also agree w/ BNelson re: her vids, but I still think "Back To December" is her most visually beautiful (if, again, Totally Obvious and Literal)

Also Kathleen Hanna's fandom of TSwift is like my current self making an It Gets Better video for my 13 year-old self

sad that the existence of the 22 video has not yet resulted in a bonanza of .gifs of taylor swift flicking the Vs.
