I know many people, from the hood to the suburbs, who toss around 'nigga' and 'faggot' as if they have no historical meaning whatsoever. I hear Filipino, Latino, and everyone else use 'nigga' as their equivalent to 'dude' and it's rare for someone to jump up and be vocally defensive about it because a lot of people, for better or worse, don't grant those words the same power we all collectively once did.
michael richards will be relieved to hear about this

I taught American History to high schoolers and subbed at jr. high. These kids give no fucks about using those words. They don't even seem aware that they should.

Micheal Richards doesn't matter. And way to take my comment out of context to make it sound like I'm excusing the language.

If they're born in the late eighties or early nineties and in college they don't use thise words, not around here. Plus, my university has a massive anti fag means stupid campaign

I get yr larger point, but saying that nobody cares about the n-word or f-word seems kinda idealistic, if a popular white rapper dropped an album w/ the n-word all over it the ppl who care would outnumber the ppl who don't. plus I imagine only half the rappers who throw the f-word around are secretly gay, that's a problem.

Point is, I only use "f*****" as a f***** and directed toward other f*****s who I like. Which is near-diametric to how AB played it.

I never said no one should care. Not my argument at all! I was simply stating that there are people who use those words casually, and we shouldn't act as if they don't exist because it doesn't fit into the preferred narrative

i'm not buying her argument at all, at the least because it just reads too defensively. i don't think you get to assert an alternate, general meaning for your hate speech AFTER you've thrown it at someone in the targeted category

when 50 cent went into similar homophobia on twitter he got blowback for it. also iirc correctly someone somewhere wrote something about tyler's homophobic and misogynist language. willing to bet that ppl have written about hateful language from other male rappers before, they got chuck d like jesus iirc. if there seems to be some inordinate amount of attn paid to this now it's becuz the standards of behavior have been raised since will smith could crack aids jokes or pe could work some gaybashing into their aids song. doesn't seem crazy to think if hs football coaches in alabama can be taken to task for using homophobic language in 2013 then youtube one hit wonders can also. it's called progress.
― balls, Friday, 15 February 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)
azealia banks I question her queerness she calls herself queer but we'll see if she plays this
― unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 15 February 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
and the generalized "backstabber bloodsucker" meaning doesn't even make sense. i'm out of touch with the youth culture these days, but can anybody tell me if teen girls are calling each other faggots these days?

what are the odds on her dropping a "but some of my best friends are gay" defense
― unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 15 February 2013 19:45 (thirteen years ago)
Her argument (if you can call it that) is so flawed and terrible. There is zero justification for it, and she just needs to own that fact, do a duet with Elton John and I'm sure we'll all forget...just like last time.
― Cousin Slappy, Friday, 15 February 2013 19:45 (thirteen years ago)
elton john's out of her league, maybe rufus wainwright is available
― unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 15 February 2013 19:47 (thirteen years ago)
but hey maybe rural alabama is more progressive and has better schools than where mr slappy subs and they throw up their hands at kids using bigoted language and think 'well, kids don't always follow the preferred narrative! whattya gonna do?' instead of maybe pointing out to these kids that in the real world using that kind of language will make it impossible for them to hold a job (unless they work in silicon valley), maybe discipline and guide them, maybe even teach them (call it a 'teachable moment' maybe). maybe mr slappy subs in mississippi.

iirc ppl mostly stopped caring about Eminem because he was spending most of his time yelling "I LUV U" at his daughter, so he said some homophobic shit on a Nicki Minaj song and threatened to beat up Rihanna on "Love the Way You Lie" to become noteworthy again

yeah it's never an especially useful parallel, but they're also probably the most powerful and prevalent slurs against minorities that constantly get thrown around and debated about, so they'll always be twinned to some extent. the Blur and Oasis of hate speech. (xp)

No, balls. No.
Eminem is still listed as the best rapper of all time, for many people (not myself, obv). No one associates his name with his homophobic lyrics these days as often as you'd like to think. And if they do, they down-play that fact with gushing over his "talent' and "charisma".
― Cousin Slappy, Friday, 15 February 2013 20:06 (thirteen years ago)
who is 'they' here?
― balls, Friday, 15 February 2013 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
Um, I don't know...maybe people who write about music and make lists of the top rappers of all time? I rarely, if ever on these lists, see a great deal of time spent on Eminem's homophobic lyrical content. If it is, it's usually accompanied by some crap about his duet with Elton and how that somehow excuses it...along with that "talent" and "charisma".
― Cousin Slappy, Friday, 15 February 2013 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

i mean i'll grant his homophobia doesn't completely define him (though he's obv aware and unrepentant about it being a part of his arsenal, cf roman's revenge), but it defines him more than say ice cube's issues w/ koreans defines him. that azealia banks is defined more by her bigotry is due to their being little else to define her - she had one youtube hit forever ago and she rants about gays on twitter, that's her public persona to the small segment of the public that's even aware she exists. if m.i.a had only had 'galang' and anti-gay rantings on livejournal that'd be her legacy also. that ppl even care at this point is due less to banks continuing to dig (cuz really, who still think's we're looking at a 'career artist' or whatever here?) than reddit types like juzwiak or slappy here feeling the need to defend or spin it. she's a bigot and a moron, there's no interesting takes to be plumbed from it.
