two weeks pass...

Anyone else at the Lexington show last night? Phenomenal stuff; the new material is so much better live; looser, freer etc. And Matt Mondanile's guitar work was absolutely sublime. Could happily listen to him puttering about for hours.

Flower Lane grew on me. it's pretty cool, especially the first half.

Hastily put together review of said gig...

Flower Lane is gorgeous. What Pitchfork listed as a defect of Ducktails -- Mondaile's preference for surfaces over substance, the fact that his songs do not "cohere" as neatly as Real Estate's songs do, for instance -- I think is one of his great strengths. If the songs felt like they were "going somewhere" they wouldn't have the magical, meandering quality that they do.

Best Ducktails, imo.

chromecassettes, Saturday, 22 June 2013 21:25 (twelve years ago)

it's hard for me to choose between this one and arcade dynamics, which is an album that make me happy whenever i listen to it. i think they accomplish different things.

every time I see this damn thread I keep hearing "Life is like a hurricaaaaaaaaaaaaane" and having to remind myself that it's about something different

Egyptian Sports Network collaboration w/ Spencer Clark from Skaters is sounding pretty good.

finally got around to The FLower Lane and it's pretty great imo
one of those times where for a second i was mad at myself for not delving in earlier but then it sounds totally OTM right now while staring out at the bright frozen wasteland out the window. so i Ain't mad at me

it's a great album, one of my favorites from last year. the cover of "planet phrom" is a treat

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 22:20 (twelve years ago)

Can't say I care much for Ducktails, but DJ Sprinkles' remix of "Letter Of Intent" is phenomenal, if you haven't heard Queerifications & Ruins:

one year passes...

Is there another thread dedicated to Ducktails' new album, St. Catherine? I thought there'd be more fans. I didn't even realize this was released until now. Listening. Reviews seem tepid, but I loved the last two albums, so...

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Sunday, 9 August 2015 22:53 (ten years ago)

this one is kind of growing on me, but as of yet i'm still listening to it more out of loyalty to magic first impressions with the last one than for what it does on its own

reggie (qualmsley), Sunday, 9 August 2015 23:41 (ten years ago)

Wait, what?

There's a new album?

Treeship, Friday, 13 October 2017 19:14 (eight years ago)

Did Julian come back to replace this dude?

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 13 October 2017 19:17 (eight years ago)

This is pretty disturbing.

Treeship, Friday, 13 October 2017 19:44 (eight years ago)

Dude's whole persona is about being chill, taking it easy, and wearing oversized oxford shirts. Getting sort of Jimmy Saville vibes from the gap between an orchestrated appearance and a sinister reality.

This must have been very serious for his high school friends to fire him.

Treeship, Friday, 13 October 2017 19:45 (eight years ago)

damn, that is lame — will not be checking out this dude's new record.

tylerw, Friday, 13 October 2017 19:54 (eight years ago)

Good on them for sacking him *before* the allegations were even public knowledge, that's rare.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 13 October 2017 19:54 (eight years ago)

but then not saying anything about those allegations to anyone?

na (NA), Friday, 13 October 2017 19:56 (eight years ago)

article makes it sound like he only got fired bc of the guy who was not already friends with him

na (NA), Friday, 13 October 2017 19:56 (eight years ago)

damn, that is lame — will not be checking out this dude's new record.

― tylerw, Friday, October 13, 2017 3:54 PM (four minutes ago)

yeah i just threw it on the other day . i liked a few tracks but i'd have a hard time going back to it now

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 13 October 2017 20:00 (eight years ago)

but then not saying anything about those allegations to anyone?

I'm honestly not sure if it's all that important to reach out to anyone except whoever was directly affected? Otherwise all you're doing is letting your fans know how correct and righteous you were to kick him out.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 13 October 2017 20:02 (eight years ago)

or warning other women to stay away from him

na (NA), Friday, 13 October 2017 20:02 (eight years ago)

OK, that's fair.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 13 October 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

yeah i get not wanting to publicly shame someone (especially someone you were close with), but an abuser will often just keep abusing if there's not something specific put out there.

tylerw, Friday, 13 October 2017 20:11 (eight years ago)

I suspect someone argued this exact point with them, hence the public clarification 1.5 years on

oh no. the national gallery of art is going to have a hell of a time uninstalling those mobiles.

how's life, Friday, 13 October 2017 21:33 (eight years ago)

I've heard things over the years about MM but nothing specific, vague things about him being a 'creep' & a predator. Behavior that was completely at odds with the 'take it easy' 'killing the vibe' pose from him. Several years ago some friends played with Real Estate & walked in on MM doing a ton of coke right before Real Estate's set. 'Duckrails' is a name I've heard often.

Pitchfork reporting Gaslamp Killer raped 2 women, Millions of Dead Posers posted on Facebook and said it was true

Erotic Wolf (crüt), Saturday, 14 October 2017 02:45 (eight years ago)

first heard rumours about Alex Calder being a creep in montreal ages ago

flopson, Saturday, 14 October 2017 04:49 (eight years ago)

"Creepy" seems like an imprecise term for people who are alleged to have assaulted people. I guess this is just what people say when they don't want to give details.

Treeship, Saturday, 14 October 2017 06:00 (eight years ago)

oh i didn't mean to imply i didn't know details. it was an open secret for at least the last... wanna say 2 years?

flopson, Saturday, 14 October 2017 06:28 (eight years ago)

I remember hearing this about Matt Mondanile some time ago... like 2009, 2010? It was after a tour in Australia. And then another independent account a few years later...

MikoMcha, Saturday, 14 October 2017 07:45 (eight years ago)

"The world of 2017 is really getting me down, time for something lighter, oh here's a thread on the delightful theme tune to Ducktails. Oh... oh..." 😔 😡

Calling someone out over their Twitter likes is a bit unfair though as I know a lot of people who use it as a bookmarking system rather than for agreeing with a Tweet's sentiment.

Not saying that's the case here but there's been plenty of threads about it in the last week now that other user's likes are showing up in people's feeds.

groovypanda, Friday, 26 January 2018 08:09 (eight years ago)

It's shite tbh and we should bh
