two months pass...

From today's Jason Collins piece:

I had a happy childhood in the suburbs of L.A. My parents instilled in us an appreciation of history, art and, most important, Motown. Jarron and I weren't allowed to listen to rap until we were 12. After our birthday I dashed to Target and bought DJ Quik's album Quik Is the Name. I memorized every line.

his daughter was just charged with murder so that might set the release schedule off some :(

it's a really horrible story i recommend not googling it.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 14 June 2013 13:25 (twelve years ago)

sad face is a reference to the crime not the setting off the release schedule. didnt mean to be so flippant

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 14 June 2013 13:26 (twelve years ago)

I had the opportunity to see him on Friday but I ended up leaving before he went onstage because I was too drunk and the venue was too crowded.

!!

Spottie, Saturday, 25 January 2014 05:46 (twelve years ago)

It was a really good show, although I wish he'd given less time for Quixotic to fuck around and his son's miniset was totally unnecessary. He has a great stage presence and had a lot of fun and danced around a lot. It all felt pretty loose. He went through like a bottle and a half of champagne on stage. At one point he had Quixotic do a mix of a bunch of songs he'd ghost-produced. He sang part of "Let's Get Down" over "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The version he did of "Do I Love Her?" had this really weird slower, Dilla-ish sounding version of the beat? He was using two mics with two mic stands the whole show for some reason and in the middle of "Mo Pussy" he suddenly goes "1-2-3-4 Show's over!", slams both of them down and disappears offstage, but then he came back and did a bit of "Why U Bullshittin'".

Setlist:

????? (No one seemed to be rapping along to this, so it might be new)
Can U Werk Wit Dat?
Pitch in on a Party
Trouble
Diggin' U Out
Can I Eat It?
Jus Lyke Compton
Put It On Me
Down, Down, Down

His son came out and did a miniset at this point

Safe and Sound
Born and Raised in Compton
Let's Get Down
Sweet Black Pussy
Tonite
Do I Love Her?
Mo Pussy

Encore:
Why U Bullshittin'?

The Reverend, Sunday, 26 January 2014 00:36 (twelve years ago)

Oh, and he spent the whole intro of "Trouble" doing the reject haha

The Reverend, Sunday, 26 January 2014 00:39 (twelve years ago)

Sounds kinda strange!

Spottie, Sunday, 26 January 2014 03:02 (twelve years ago)

It was kinda strange but not nearly as much so as the Book of David release party I watched online and live-blogged somewhere
