Trying to think of a more satisfying music success story from the last five years or so than Miguel, and I really can't

I've read a couple variations of the "Miguel is great and all, but he doesn't have a narrative" argument in the wake of his Grammy spotlight, but I don't really think that's true. "Auteur works his way through the studio system, his vision intact" is a pretty inspiring narrative in its own right these days

if someone's narrative "is good at making music, finds success in making music, also is sexy," then that's not really a narrative, it's just image and/or simple facts.

like contrasted to the human interest element of the obvious comparison point of Frank Ocean, it's pretty different

Yeah, I get that. But it's pretty rare these days for a singer with few ties to any other established stars or elite circles to find success on the scale Miguel has, and I think that's something worth celebrating. Nobody's gonna make a movie about it, but it's a nice reminder that the industry works sometimes

I like Miguel and all but you can't exactly say he has few ties to established stars or elite circles, dude has been on two separate majors and lots of features with major artists.

I dunno. He obviously collaborates with big names here and there, but he feels like an independent contractor. He doesn't have a central allegiance the way a lot of his contemporaries do

it's fair to say he has relied on guest rappers and stuff like that less than most R&B artists in his lane or at his career level, and that most of the big co-signs he's gotten have come AFTER he proved himself with big solo hits. but it's all relative, in some ways he's very industry, in some ways he's kind of off the beaten path. xp

xp So many of his contemporaries are beholden to the clique that spawned them or the bigger star that sired them. That's not the case with Miguel.

Yeah, it's a compliment; the gist is that Miguel doesn't have that same narrative advantages Frank Ocean had. Which, yeah, that's true; there's no inspiring, groundbreaking story there to fuel the buzz, so the music has to stand on its own

yeah the closest thing he has to an ~angle~ is vaguely aligning himself with ~indie r&b~ (and the conscious way he does this is pretty lol, it's like he knows it's just savvy marketing/branding - esp considering how little he sounds like anyone else under that umbrella)

in the UK, he's had coverage without even any heavy PRing

i was right upthread about "How Many Drinks" being the next single without "Do You" ever fully catching on, at no point was it less than 20 spots below "Adorn" on the radio charts

re-entered the hip-hop/r&b top 50 this week but yeah... i mean "adorn" is still hanging around the top 40, i'm not sure if any single would've succeeded in its shadow

"how many drinks" is dope tho so it's cool

yeah it's great, the rap gets stuck in my head

still amazed at "Adorn"'s success.

was thinking a few days ago that "how many drinks" with miguel's rap verses swapped out for an actual rapper seemed like an obvious fourth or fifth single choice

miguel's 'rap' isn't really like a 16 bar thing and it directly transitions into the great variations in the last chorus so i hope they just add the kendrick verse to the song and don't do any kind of swap out w/ that section

also kendrick's wardrobe is getting a little miguel haha

yeah miggy's rap is fine

i mean "that ass is colossal" is one of those things that ends up not really sounding very seductive/complimentary, but the way the spoken bit drifts into the "waste my time/waste your time" bit and then those great ad libs over the chorus is awesome

yeah this is the best part of the song, the entire final 30 or 45 seconds or whatever it is

but it always seemed obv to me that they'd just switch in a real rapper to give it some juice as a single

it's def not a desecration on the level of Wiz on "Adorn" but the way Kendrick bunts songs like "Fuckin' Problems" has me wary

people love his "fuckin problems" verse
