it's a humorous night for a horsedance
― mbvgz (how's life), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, there's got to be some sort of Weird Al law. Like, the closer pop music comes to an actual Weird Al parody, the closer we are too armageddon. Like the Doomsday Clock.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 18:26 (thirteen years ago)
what I mean is, pretty much every parody that could exist of this song is on Youtube already, so he's going to have to mine that space even further. maybe even turn it into a song about getting lots of Youtube views. or, maybe about eating food.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 18:33 (thirteen years ago)
You mean, like turn it into a song about eating pistachios?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 19:59 (thirteen years ago)
Next level would be Weird Al turning Gangnam Style into a food parody in Korean

Fuck it, someone else can fix it.
I think Weird Al's just going to leave this song alone like he did with the Macarena.
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)
does "Gangnam Style" still deserve its own thread?
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 18:07 (thirteen years ago)
Just checked out the wiki on this for the first time:
Comedian/television personality, Noh Hongchul, who does his trademark pelvis-thrusting dance in an elevator while PSY raps underneath him
Trademark pelvis-thrusting dance? Answers a lot of questions while raising several more.

PSY should have learned from Lou Bega. Never follow up a big global smash hit with something called "Gentleman":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L74mqBSJdWQ
― MarkoP, Thursday, 11 April 2013 14:45 (thirteen years ago)
Despite easy nods to GS I will say this video is pretty funny, again. There's a story and not just 'crazy' moves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASO_zypdnsQ
The heroine of the story is a member of the girl group who actually launched this dance, actually: http://youtu.be/ofwFr8o8p0Y

-actually
it's definitely better than the lou bega song

Yes, it's Ga-In, who released this wonderful solo track last year:

Tough to say really, but prob not a bad idea to strike while the iron is hot.

video is fun. song isn't as unstoppable, but what would be?

If I were Kim Jong Un, I would put my best men and women to work coming up with a song, dance and video that beats "Gangnam Style" on the charts, to show up South Korea (and everyone). I can totally imagine it. "We will launch a new single that will absolutely destroy the world. The Top 40 will be ours!"
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:01 (thirteen years ago)
And the can challenge Psy to a dance off. Or I guess crotch thrust off? Because that's pretty much Psy's dance.
No, the crotch thrust is (S. Korean comedian) Haha's signature move. The hip wiggle is (S. Korean idol group) Brown Eyed Girls' signature move from their 2009 hit "Abracadabra". The horse dance is Psy's signature move, and I gotta tell you, I've been in Zumba classes where both parts - the lassoing part and the trotting part - were a part of the routine, although not together at the same time.
Psy's "Happening" concert is on Youtube btw, and is pretty awesome. I support the hip wiggle and Ga In's extended cameo in the "Gentleman" video, also dude's attempts to break the sexless/harmless Asian dude stereotype, but it's never cool to push girls to the floor. That's unfunny jerk behavior.
― hurricane weather (forapper), Sunday, 14 April 2013 01:21 (thirteen years ago)
No video could top "Gangnam Style", but I like "Gentlemen" the song more. Probably because it's PSY gone New Beat + Big Beat, both particularly hitting my buttons.
― ma ck ro ma ck ro (mackro mackro), Sunday, 14 April 2013 02:49 (thirteen years ago)
A Psy/Uffie collaboration would blow my mind.
― ma ck ro ma ck ro (mackro mackro), Sunday, 14 April 2013 02:55 (thirteen years ago)
also dude's attempts to break the sexless/harmless Asian dude stereotype
i dont think this stereotype needs breaking in s. korea tbf
― 乒乓, Sunday, 14 April 2013 12:23 (thirteen years ago)
yeah but this is his first big video explicitly aimed at continuing his success in america/the west, right
― Rapper Boy (some dude), Sunday, 14 April 2013 12:25 (thirteen years ago)
to Gangnam style
― frogbs, Sunday, 14 April 2013 12:26 (thirteen years ago)
well having seen the video, it def still feels very much aimed at the s. korean market first, worldwide second xp
― 乒乓, Sunday, 14 April 2013 12:34 (thirteen years ago)
Even if it's aimed at home, Psy's spent the last year touring abroad under something like that misconception, I think.
But also I think if it were really aimed at the South Korean market, he wouldn't have recycled a dance craze everyone already knows from just a couple years ago.

seems to be getting good us press/interest/attention
― gr8 tr∞lls i have known (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 April 2013 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
It's already got 70 million youtube views and is currently top 20 on US iTunes. New Billboard rules regarding youtube views could let this be a hit with almost zero initial radio attention much like Harlem Shake was.
― Greer, Monday, 15 April 2013 20:49 (thirteen years ago)
something tells me that billboard is giving a little (= way) too much weight to youtube streaming
