I've listened to this probably a dozen times now. I absolutely love it, warts and all. What a great album.

yeah im gonna wait til the lp arrives too i think now. 3 or 4 plays is enough for now, i want to hear it properly.

burned a disc of the mp3s last nite and listened to it on my good speakers and cd player....really amazing to hear it a bit louder on speakers

aside from questions of songs, arrangement, tones, etc...this might be heresy but i think this is a better PRODUCED & engineered record than loveless...the mixes are just expertly done, i think the drums sound better across the board than loveless and the way he's made the vocals sit in the mix is just masterful, they are much clearer in a way but still feel very soft and a part of the overall whoosh of the music...he really got better since loveless, honestly, i wouldn't mind if he got the masters of loveless and did a new mix of it just for shits and giggles, would maybe be the highlight of 2024

well, check out the analogue disc of Loveless, I do think it makes all the difference

So... "if I am" is really good for sunrises. I came down ill and took today off, subsequently staying in my window facing bed when id usually be taking a shower and headed out. The nonchalance, the warmness, the slow progression... really kinda made for a kinda unbelievable complement to seeing the sun progress through the gaps in the trees.

Hoping to get more of this sound, I checked out XTRMNTR. Pretty disappointed by that one. I don't get it...if there's anything to get. Too harsh and the vocals do nothing for me.

I've been listening to m b v since Sunday morning; on headphones, car speakers, regular speakers.

Then I took out the REMASTERED ANALOGUE version of Loveless. Sonically, m b v makes more sense this way; not so with the first mastering of Loveless or the CD remastering. Both have their charm and purpose, but from what I've read, I always interpreted Shields's words as favouring the remastered analogue version.

I swear I couldn't tell the difference between the analogue and non-analogue versions of Loveless, but I think I got a dodgy torrent or something because people all say the analogue is obviously superior. I have decent speakers and a good ear, or maybe I only thought I did...

A quick practical note: I couldn't get the direct-purchased MP3s to work on my (non-Apple) player, and noticed some weird behaviour in things like VLC too - hanging, odd blank space in the scroll bar etc. Mentioned this to a friend, and he'd had similar problems; he did some tinkering and discovered that, for reasons best known to Kev, the MP3 tags included a 3MB version of the album art for each file. I'd wondered why they were so huge, and this explains why my Flash based player was struggling. Used mp3tag to strip these elements out, and all fine.

I played both versions back-to-back, with direct "5 seconds on one album" and another few seconds of the other and, yes, I could tell the difference. Some parts are more subtle than others. If I was at a get-together and heard the album in loud speakers, I don't think I would be able to say, "Shit, man, that's the REMASTERED ANALOGUE version of Loveless!"

Shields has said himself it's more of the sensation and feeling you get listening to it. As a person who has recorded in studios (on analogue and digitally), I have to agree. There is no other way to explain it. That's why you get more into it in good smallish speakers in smallish rooms or on a good pair of cans.

I doubt the wavs would be any louder. Seems like they'd just have a cleaner high end.

agreeeeed. like yes i can turn the shit up thx for the tip but then going to any other album in itunes i have to adjust it back down. i guess he didn't want his 22yr old baby louderized

loaded it up in audacity to check; looks like the only tracks that come even close to peaking are the last two.

so yeah, the record could have been louder. except for those two tracks.

I have to say I would pay dear money for a written account of the making of this album, esp the final stretch. So many questions - why not wait for the gimmicky Valentine's day release, why the surprise drop and did KS really not know the exact day of release a week ago? The way the album arrived seemed so improvised, considering the wait and the perfectionism of its creator - just wondering how much of that was for show

I was 6 when loveless came out so although I think these guys are ok I never like got my head wrecked by the dreamwave revolution or whatevs. Having listened to this a few times though I have to say I'm won over by how pretty it is. Starting about halfway thru the second track I keep getting a strong feeling of "man I wish I was on €¢$ta$y right now", which is about the last thing I expected.
