I don't really know who Bullet for My Valentine is, but you'd have to think they found out My Bloody Valentine was releasing their first album in 22 years during the ramp up to the release of their own and thought "FUCK! THAT HAD TO COME RIGHT NOW?"
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 February 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)
a shitty but hugely popular metalcore band
― pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 4 February 2013 15:15 (thirteen years ago)
who sell more records than my bloody valentine
― pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 4 February 2013 15:16 (thirteen years ago)
well, only because they release them more frequently.
― :C (crüt), Monday, 4 February 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)
i don't know anything about bullet for my valentine, but i'm sure they're just like "who are my bloody valentine? oh well we're rich"

OK i finally listened to it the whole way through on headphones. I get the demo comment now, but also a big part of the charm of this album is - as someone noted above - how fresh it sounds. "Loveless" is so meticulous, it's like listening in to a space capsule. Here, you have one sound that literally sounds like KS got a bunch of loops and is mixing the tune live, turning up the volume a little bit, maybe punching in another loop, then cranking the track so it's a noisey and distorted drone. The last half of the record stands out with its noiser bits. At one point it sounds like there is nothing but drums and one crazy noise guitar playing together.
Thing is, even on the songs where there's not really a whole lot there to grab on to, there almost always ends up being a guitar sound, or a solo or, or a synth part, or SOMETHING really wonderful and interweaving and glorious coming in at the end of the song. There were many times where all of a sudden something would happen on a track I was just droning out on and take it to a whole new awesome place.
This record is way great. I spend over half my life waiting for it and am NOT disappointed.

Actually, I thought the 'analogue remaster' of Loveless has something in common with this one: It sounds like the band....
― Mark G, Monday, 4 February 2013 15:41 (thirteen years ago)
The noisier tracks on this are WONDERFUL.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 15:43 (thirteen years ago)
I am listening on headphones and the whirring of the dishwasher in the kitchen is bleeding into the sound when the volume gets all quiet and it's actually quite exhilarating, though I know that haters would see that as a gotcha comment.

My wife made me turn it off yesterday, which means Shields must have done something right. My kids were nonplussed.

It's possible that you're still listening to the fake vacuum cleaner leak
― Z S, Monday, 4 February 2013 15:52 (thirteen years ago)
At least then she'd think I was cleaning!
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 February 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
hahaha
― Z S, Monday, 4 February 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
I've only listened to it once and I like it (apart from 'nothing is').
― A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 4 February 2013 16:07 (thirteen years ago)
I think the opening track would have got lost anywhere but where it is.

Yep, I pretty much agree with this. There's nowhere else on the album I could imagine it going, and while it's no 'Only Shallow' in terms of album openers (then again, what IS?), at least it doesn't get lost and people will give the track a chance where it is.

I've seen a few people get a bit down on that track, even going as far as calling it 'filler'. Personally, I find the pounding, relentless momentum of it very exciting.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 4 February 2013 16:10 (thirteen years ago)
I like it too. It works well leading into Wonder 2.
― afriendlypioneer, Monday, 4 February 2013 16:11 (thirteen years ago)
And after whatever comes before it... that really good one. I forget what it's called.
― afriendlypioneer, Monday, 4 February 2013 16:13 (thirteen years ago)
I love how experimental this record is. Like, I want to see chord progression charts for these songs, they would probably make no sense at all.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
Really? Aside from "In another way" it sounds straight forward to me.This record sounds great when played next to the Tremolo EP imo
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 4 February 2013 16:31 (thirteen years ago)
"Nothing is" repeats every 28 measures (you can tell, there's a guitar flub)
― Mark G, Monday, 4 February 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)
so we've got the loveless outtakes collection now, when's this new album out
― am0n, Monday, 4 February 2013 16:52 (thirteen years ago)
My only beef is if they wait as long again to put out another record I'll be almost 60.
― "Turkey In The Straw" coming from someplace in the clouds (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 4 February 2013 16:57 (thirteen years ago)
Late to the party as usual, downloaded last night and played twice today. It sounds like MBV, what's the problem? I do think there's too many mid tempo songs at the start of the album, but the tempos generally speed up as it progresses, and the volume increases too. As someone else has said it makes a good follow up to the "Tremelo" EP, seeing as "Loveless" seemed to step back from the brink of experimentation of that EP. I enjoyed it more the second time, and I think I'll enjoy it more each time I listen. It won't gain them any new fans, but existing fans should be pleased with it.
And trying to have a discussion about the band and new album with my wife while also trying to discourage my 6 yr old son from saying the word "Bloody" because it's "a rude word" is bloody difficult. :)

Anybody else hearing a lil' bit of Deerhoof in the vocals of "In Another Way"??
― global tetrahedron, Monday, 4 February 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)
Really? Aside from "In another way" it sounds straight forward to me.
To me as well, but I only listened once or twice to the Youtubes. I think I'd find it more interesting if I noticed unusual harmonic progressions. Where are you hearing these?
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:15 (thirteen years ago)
nothing is = techno?
― am0n, Monday, 4 February 2013 17:21 (thirteen years ago)
nothing is = industrial skiffle
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:27 (thirteen years ago)
it's the midpoint between Lonnie Donegan and the Young Gods
there's one track on this that totally steals the guitar sound from Can's 'I Want More' amirite?
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)
i think i mean the song 'new you'
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:32 (thirteen years ago)
it's kind of bo diddley in space
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)
"Is This and Yes" is a pretty weird progression. "In Another Way" has kind of a weird progression. At the very least those bagpipe guitars are some abrasive and non-straightforward stuff. I don't know, maybe it's just all the arrangements that gave me that impression. Just feels alot more chaotic than "Loveless" to me.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)
Bo Diddley in space yeah. Last night on headphones i was getting a "2001: Space Odyssey" done by Noise Disney.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:47 (thirteen years ago)
Like, "New You" is cool, it's definitely got a Stereolab vibe for a bit. Maybe it's not that adventurous of a song but it's just great to hear this band again. Check out how the guitar tremelo is perfectly lined up with the drums. Is there only one guitar there? I love the looping of her vocals at the end, especially that little bit at the end of the phrase where she sings "do do do" a little slower and it almost cuts off and then the loop just starts back up again. SO GREAT!
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)
"Nothing Is" is fucking awesome. This is what i mean by experimental. They could have done with a more straight-ahead krautrock beat rather than this bizarre two-step which is kind of just whipping around the rhythm. Feel like I heard there was gonna be this cool noise band playing a house show and I show up and the lights are all off and everyone is standing around getting wasted in the dark watching as Kevin turns on a strobe light and maybe a noise TV and then starts punching up this stuff on a sampler.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 17:59 (thirteen years ago)
I feel like the craft of making this record really shows throughout. It's as much about making the record as the record itself.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

About the chord progressions: I hear a lot of sus4 (and possibly 7sus4) type-chords, specifically New You, but also in a lot of the other songs.
On another note: loving this record from start to finish.

DJ at Bush Tetras show last night was playing this in between bands. Sounded fantastic loud.

Industrial skiffle otm, and I tried to think of something to say about the harmonic choices that wouldn't turn into "The Driest Post On ILM" but I couldn't so nm
