nothing is . . .

reggie (qualmsley), Sunday, 3 February 2013 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

The Third Eye Foundation references are spot on imho, in 'in another way' but mostly in the closer. Harsher beats, which somehow remind me of Portishead's 'Third'. Which makes it full circle in a Bristol kind of way.

I'm not reviewing either - maybe close to year's end.

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 3 February 2013 23:13 (thirteen years ago)

i've also decided not to review it. i love them too much, it would be terribly biased

Z S, Sunday, 3 February 2013 23:18 (thirteen years ago)

i have reviewed this album, and i give it a good solid thumbs-up

A wise choice of cuisine.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 February 2013 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

ya but peruvian ceviche is only my favourite food as a main dish. if it's gonna be an appetiser I'll take mex ceviche

christ I'm drunk. talk about the new bloody valentines album pls

☯ t (wins), Sunday, 3 February 2013 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, I've never tried ceviche. It sounds good.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 3 February 2013 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

it is intensely weird listening to stuff that sounds anagramatic of previous mbv songs & textures & all but then a little way into the first song when it coheres & is doing something new sorta & you're kinda back in their ~emotional zone~ & weirdly linked to all the places you've been with that, it's pretty special
― schlump, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:31 (18 hours ago) Permalink

Yup, then the album tears off into wild, unknown directions. More rhythmic than most of Loveless; and less looping with the the pop/melodic hooks that, to me, make Loveless so good. More sonically conscious. Looking forward to hearing this in another format other than Youtube to hear how this flows

Eggs and the marketing board behind them, Monday, 4 February 2013 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

Ceviche is indeed all that, Sund4r, and you should investigate forthwith.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 February 2013 00:14 (thirteen years ago)

Often I wonder whether it's best to date or relax with a plate of fish cooking in lemon juice.

Dating is a dish best served cold.

Am I the only one mad enough to hear some at least superficial similarities betwixt "Wonder 2" and "Sugar Cystals" by Airiel/Schnauss?

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Monday, 4 February 2013 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

Schnauss is something of the elephant in the electroshoegaze room isn't he

that said, he's a bit more housey and straightforward than what's going on in the last 3 tracks here - the ornate, savaged

imago, Monday, 4 February 2013 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'm hearing some schnauss here and there

djembe v (electricsound), Monday, 4 February 2013 00:31 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah percussively more than anything. Schauss was always was more Cocteaus/Slowdive in sound than MBV.

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Monday, 4 February 2013 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

Glad to know I'm not the only one hearing Stereolab in this at places

Raymond Cummings, Monday, 4 February 2013 01:53 (thirteen years ago)

you know who kinda sounded like my bloody valentine AND stereolab? all natural lemon & lime flavors. and they haven't released a record in 15 years! the more you know...

scott seward, Monday, 4 February 2013 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

Just finished my first listen to the album, and holy fucking shit! I think my favourites on this one are the ones where they go to extremes. On one hand: 'Is This And Yes' and 'New You', and on the other 'Nothing Is' (felt like my ears were being pummeled repeatedly... this is a good thing!) and 'Wonder 2' (wish that the phased/flanged drums at the end could have gone on for a bit longer). Having said that, 'Only Tomorrow' is a gem and I can definitely see 'If I Am' growing on me.

Less accessible than Loveless in terms of songs, I think, but perversely it seems a much easier listen(!)

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 4 February 2013 02:50 (thirteen years ago)

all natural lemon and lime flavors are probably the best of the post-shoegaze peeps

groundhog-enorme-toute-grosse-253x300.jpg (clouds), Monday, 4 February 2013 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

^ that is some good stuff. Those days when noisey stereolab was part of the equation..

brimstead, Monday, 4 February 2013 04:13 (thirteen years ago)

What about color filter

brimstead, Monday, 4 February 2013 04:14 (thirteen years ago)

argh I mean Flowchart!

brimstead, Monday, 4 February 2013 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

color filter's "silent way" album craps all over flowchart

some great guitar sounds on this one

damn fine guitar sounds, yes.

rocky dennis horror show (Pillbox), Monday, 4 February 2013 04:43 (thirteen years ago)

oh man that mogwai remix linked upthread. i forgot how amazing that is. what's weird is when it came out i knew it was good, but i sort of thought that things like that would be appearing about equally impressive and intense and good or whatever 2-3 times a year until the unknown future. i had no idea.

caek, Monday, 4 February 2013 07:24 (thirteen years ago)

"nothing is" is the standout for me thus far. The way it does something quite different for them, but familiar in sound if another band were to do it, and yet, still very MBV somehow?

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Monday, 4 February 2013 07:47 (thirteen years ago)

It's great to my ears, and needs an extended remix à la Glider.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 4 February 2013 09:13 (thirteen years ago)

So um I'm no Ned or Matos or anything but I wrote up a review of this on my lil blog.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 4 February 2013 12:40 (thirteen years ago)

woke up sunday morning with a massive hangover, the emotional kind, the kind where you're easily bent out of shape by external stimuli. headphones on, did the parkland walk up to alexandra palace, listened to it three or four times, kept making me :') can't really ask for more. it's exactly what i expected and that's certainly no bad thing.
