hey guys i just woke up, what did i miss?

Roz, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:32 (thirteen years ago)

man the last third or so of "new you"

Clay, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

Floored on first listen

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:35 (thirteen years ago)

cried a couple times during this. amazing.

Chris S, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:36 (thirteen years ago)

This will sound very 20th century, but: will I be able to buy this in a store in the US?

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:37 (thirteen years ago)

just speaking generally btw, the second side of this is nuts, huh. there are weird moments on the first - that whole rewind ending!, & the sorta touched analogue w/keyboards & bilinda, but it's crazy hearing it go into such specific for want of a less loaded word experimental territory half way through

schlump, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:37 (thirteen years ago)

i think this record is a bit weaker melodically than loveless but i think the sound is superior. this is not a weedy album

djembe v (electricsound), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:38 (thirteen years ago)

Pretty different from Loveless. Less pure and beatific, more... I dunno... humor? Like a number of songs have this bouncy guitar effect.

can't quite bring myself to argue about stuff yet but i think choosing a superior sound is pretty difficult - there are a couple of things you can pitch against each other to see how they're handled differently, ie the songs in which bilinda harmonises with herself; on blown a wish that's a very interwoven kinda gestalt, totally meshed with the instruments, & i think the strands are more separate on this record. instrumentally it's more adventurous & vocally slightly less i think?

schlump, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:40 (thirteen years ago)

Wtf @ thomp

downton arby (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'd go along with that

djembe v (electricsound), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

thomp is a self-proclaimed slayer of sacred cows.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

Holy shit this album. I wasnt expecting to react to hearing new stuff from them like I feel right now.

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

thomp - please go take your meds

Chris S, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

Jim otm about it not being weedy - this sound packs a punch. Theres clarity, its not as soupy as Loveless. And I like that.

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:43 (thirteen years ago)

This isn't making me cry. I've not gotten any chills. But I'm not gonna blast people who are reacting that way. MBV has never resided in my personal music hierarchy, even though I do like them a great deal. Hearing this is fun for me. For someone else, it might be a spiritual experience. Ain't here to judge friends right now.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:44 (thirteen years ago)

i love when tom petty sounds like tom petty too. they're good at it. mbv and tom petty.

Yeah, after having just finished my first listen, LBI's comment upthread that they could have released this in 1994.. seems OTM. But I have absolutely no problem with that. The continuity of aesthetic in this case seems more on par w/ recent rDinosaur Jr, Mission of Burma & Guided By Voices material than, say, the radical advancement of Portishead after being dormant so long. But that is OK by me b/c those new DJ, MoB & GBV records are aging nicely w/ respect to those bands' 'classic records' & I'm guessing the same can/will be said about this album in time.

rocky dennis horror show (Pillbox), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:45 (thirteen years ago)

when i was listening i was kinda impatient to know the songs a little better; when i think of the other records there are so many phrases & parts that are like punctums, where bilinda's singing sorta rises above the song or where there's a line sung that you know & remember. i think the singing feels less anchored to the songs (maybe like, less melodic, like somebody said) on this record but it'll be really nice to know where they're going inside out & zoom in a little closer to what's happening. i listened on headphones & am looking forward to having it playing in the corner or while i go to sleep (though: it kinda goes in the wrong direction volume-wise for that, though i guess that was true of isn't anything, too, without it stopping it being one of the great zone-into-sleep records)

schlump, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:46 (thirteen years ago)

this is pretty whatever, but i also don't want anyone to kill themselves because they like it.

a basset hound (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

Have you cried in front of a painting ?

乒乓, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

huh, https://twitter.com/theofficialmbv

schlump, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:51 (thirteen years ago)

I kinda want to buy the vinyl just because of the all analog process, which I'm assuming means it was done at abbey road like a lot of the stuff albini sends there

downton arby (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:52 (thirteen years ago)

may be very MBV-sounding but it gets surprisingly inventive even coming from that familiar palette, seemingly through Kevin just willing these really odd shapes/jolting directions up from it

Chris S, Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:55 (thirteen years ago)

Lmao I just got an email from that dumb radiohead w.a.s.t.e. thing at 8:49 PM plugging atoms for peace, guess thom needs attention

downton arby (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:59 (thirteen years ago)

I would have been v disapointed with a soupy shoegazey LovelessII tbh.

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Sunday, 3 February 2013 04:59 (thirteen years ago)

Thom Yorke is like a Kardashian now.

Ulna (Nicole), Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:02 (thirteen years ago)

Reminds me of listening to Third for the first time. Which is a fantastic feeling.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

Btw I love that this thread was started ten years ago.

Ulna (Nicole), Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:04 (thirteen years ago)

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

Want to buy this SO BAD

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

I would have been v disapointed with a soupy shoegazey LovelessII tbh.

yeah, this is less soupy and fuzzed and more... lurching and deep?

the lower end makes me think of gnarled roots pushing through huge bodies of clay or something

Chris S, Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

New You is Wham.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:16 (thirteen years ago)

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:16 (thirteen years ago)

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

in another way live is going to shred everything.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

Man whatever people make shoegaze all the time they did before "Loveless" they will after this. They make pizza outside of New York City too, but I know if I ever want a REAL pizza, I have to go to NYC.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 3 February 2013 05:25 (thirteen years ago)

MBV is not about murky soup it's about a perfectly arranged soup with the exact right amount of ingredients.
