i think she's good at production if this record is any indication

ciderpress, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:23 (thirteen years ago)

i love "last kiss", but i don't really consider it among speak now's best tracks - not compared to say "enchanted" or "back to december". my favourite bits of "sad beautiful tragic" are the acres of space around the central twanging guitar - it's basically taylor doing mazzy star - and the middle eight, the sudden soft rush of all those words falling out of the song. "kiss me / try to fix it / could you just / try to listen / hang up / give up / for the life of us we can't get back..."

feel like the "sad beautiful tragic" vs "last kiss" comparison exemplifies one way in which red is a progression on her past work: she really knows how to work the sonics, and sometimes concentrates on them above the actual words, in a way she never used to

This is the result of what she could do with an outside producer: http://youtu.be/FxmCvdY4NZQ

Dunno why she balks at the idea, because this song is awesome.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

Frank Ocean vs Badu comparisons upthread are eye goggingly fucked up

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:25 (thirteen years ago)

what I've learned today is that I think an electro version of Sleigh Bells is one of the worst things in the world

she hits a great high note on "Circumambient", to say something positive; kind of a shame about everything else

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:25 (thirteen years ago)

I'm glad for the rise of the EP again, the 'album' has always felt like a cludgy format to me

yeah there's only like tens of thousands of great albums, p dud format in retrospect

downton arby (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

now this rules

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

4 is very pleasingly high. my number one vote. the album she's just released is very likely to be my number one of 2013, too.

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

Thought I really loved this for about 2 weeks but got bored with it really fast. The new one bored me even quicker.

pandemic, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

listening to that Grimes album felt like an incontinent chihuahua yapping around my ankles and playing Dawn's EP is like pulling back a foot and punting the annoying thing through a goalpost, so satisfying

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

lol

flopson, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

the "heaven" => "faith" => "scripture" section is hands down the finest bit of sequencing anywhere last year

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

I like the Grimes album well enough, but I don't think there's anything offensive in saying that it could benefit from better production.

Moodles, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

i liked armor on when i listened to it, the new R&B dragons full length one didn't do it for me, so maybe dayo is right about albums!

Like Dawn, not a fan of Grimes. Or at least I don't see the reason it should place so high at all.

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

This album ruled. My #7

armor on really rewards more and more with every listen

prolego, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

i like the production on visions a lot but i get why a typical ilxor would have problems with it. not sure ideas are really something i get a whole out of in music, but there definitely weren't any albums i heard this year with more dope hooks

flopson, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

I keep trying to get into this Dawn Richard record. Like, I think I get why you guys like it, but it isn't clicking for me. I don't find myself wanting to listen to it at all.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

I'm watching Grimes' interview with Nardwuar on youtube and her lisp is adorable. Still think Visions is a mess, though.

crucial to the Grimes myth:

I mean, there were quite a few electro/synth albums released last year... I couldn't for the life of me figure out why more folks were banging on about the Grimes record above some of the others.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

at the end of the day i think dawn is a bit out there for me

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

you certainly can't doze off to dawn

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

lex for someone who likes voices from the lake your posts are p dumb right now

flopson, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

i understand the sentiment that lex is trying to rail against but he chooses the wrong targets

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

actually armor on is pretty sleep friendly i think, i fell asleep the first time i listened to it at my desk cuz i was super hungover and tired

downton arby (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

altho now that i think about it more, you're living life wrong if you've never put "window seat" on replay and taken an impromptu nap

have this feeling sarge can doze off to anything

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

lol just catching up and this zone in zone out thing is just back of a fag packet distinction to basically say that Frank's grooves are perhaps a bit more ambient sounding (based on one track I've heard) and that it perhaps doesn't meet expectations of what an R&B album might normally sound like.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

sleep, that's where he's a viking

katz itt (cozen), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

when i flew back to chicago from miami in nov. i spent a good portion of the plane ride falling in and out of sleep while listening to the latest titus andronicus album, so you're probably right

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

talabot album is dope... "so will be now..." was one of my fav songs of the year

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

I have no idea what to expect from John Talabot

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

k so my bet is

2. miguel
1. kendrick

flopson, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

that would make me so fucking happy

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

Woop! I love the John Talabot album. One of my happiest memories of the year was cycling up towards the house I lived in out in the countryside for six months on a glorious July evening with 'Missing You' pumping into my lugholes. Strangely I didn't recognise the track that made the tracks poll and I'm starting to think it didn't copy over to my iPhone properly.

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

i can't even sleep on a plane if i taking melatonin

if i push myself through when i'd naturally fall asleep, i can only ever get a couple of hours of sleep

talabot, you definitely shouldn't sleep to this. up all night dancing > sleep

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

Should I post them together? I don't mean right this minute. But when I do...
