13. LINDSTRØM Smalhans (710 Points, 24 Votes, 2 First Place Votes) Spotify

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

Is this a concept album about 'Little Hans', the Freud case study? I hope so.

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

wooo

there hasn't been any other record in a long time that makes me feel as ecstatic as Smalhans does while i'm listening to it

ciderpress, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

Feel ILX in 2030 is more likely to be asking "Who remembers that crazy Farrah Abraham record?" than "Who remembers the fourth Beach House album?"

questino (seandalai), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

how many people here have enjoyed the shaggs?

乒乓, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

like, this record is pure energy

ciderpress, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

*raises hand*

xp

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

too low

☕ (diamonddave85), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

It's a concept album about Norwegian food iirc.

questino (seandalai), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

huh this is the first time Future has made sense to me

i know right!

smalhans suffered from diminishing returns for me - a bit too continually perky - but still a lot of fun. had a great night raving to it when he played xoyo.

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

totally. it hit me when i was running to it. it's the best album to go for a run with

suze (Matt P), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

According to last.fm, Farrah Abraham is tied with Orbital as my 7th-most listened to artist

I'm impressed. To me she's difficult listening in all sorts of ways. I'm suddenly wondering what it would be like to make a playlist alternating between her and Scott Walker.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

Also, Lindstrøm's first name is Hans-Peter. xp

questino (seandalai), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

smalhans means scarcity in norwegian iirc

every track title is the name of a traditional norwegian dish

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:08 (thirteen years ago)

These must be fun dishes to eat, because this music doesn't make me think about food at all.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

lol btw I realized that Future was making sense because I was actually listening to the R. Kelly part of "Parachute"

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

I read somewhere that Smalhans was recorded entirely using pre-sets, which really shows up all the music production bores who know don't really understand music itself.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

Faar-i-kaal is the standout track to me, it's the best execution of his 'endless staircase' thing that he does on a lot of his tracks

ciderpress, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

otm, that was great

just sayin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

this Lindstrøm album is great

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

Album makes me want to look for a Norwegian restaurant and eat a dish that comes from the best track on it.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

Is there an explanation of the track titles anywhere? I'm hoping that one of them translates as "blood sausage".

questino (seandalai), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

i remember the lindstrom album sounded kind of samey when i first listened to it, just because the energy level is so uniformly high. but then... it just kind of took off. the tracks are shorter so it's less of a "developed epic". each song starts very high, gets even more intense, then pops and fades away from center like a different-colored firework? lol

also what's the name of the musical sequence he likes to use?

suze (Matt P), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

always forget just how much ilx loves this guy

Jaap and roids (NickB), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

this is really the first time I've paid attention to him, I can understand the love affair

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

i'm kind of happy this placed above terje

suze (Matt P), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

or at least this is the first time I remember paying attention, lol

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

For 2012 output, I prefer Terje.

questino (seandalai), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

love scott and farrah showing up next to each other

call all destroyer, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

Has there been a Lindstrom-related album place in the top 20 every year? It feels like it's obligatory. I swear one day I'll actually get round to listening to more of his stuff properly, but somehow (and I REALLY don't know why) I never did outside of a handful of tracks. He just seems so prolific. I'd love it if someone could do a POX tracks or a primer.

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

god do your own homework

suze (Matt P), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

what's wrong with listening to the album that placed here and seeing if you like it?

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

it might not be the best one?

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

Is this a concept album about 'Little Hans', the Freud case study? I hope so.

would listen

Mordy, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

for me it's just this record and Where You Go I Go Too that are great, i haven't been repping him every year

ciderpress, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

xposts and what better way to discover more about an act than by asking fans about them?

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

it might not be the best one?

I don't see how this matters in the slightest.

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

I dig 'Real Life Is No Cool' a lot.

pandemic, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

xpost what's wrong with asking for a primer? IDGI

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

this is really the first time I've paid attention to him, I can understand the love affair

I am so jealous of you for getting to hear like his entire back catalogue for the first time.

My favourite moment on Smalhans is on the final track when he reprises the main theme from I Feel Space and you realise he's doing a victory lap and how much fun it must have been to make this album. Especially given Six Cups of Rebel's reputedly torturous gestation.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

thanks ciderpress and pandemic

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

if you don't want to listen to this one maybe listen to another of the albums that's placed over the years?

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

xp he might not like it, then we would all hear every year about how he tried Lindstrom once and didn't like it. It's for our own good.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

This album is like 35mins long and, if not his best, contains most of the elements that make people fall in love with him.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

cool, i'll give it a go.

dog latin, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

number one lindstrøm starting point has to be "i feel space" obv

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

Lindstrom - the cool thing about this album is that he is limiting himself to a fairly narrow range of sounds and feelings and then going all out with them and just make them hit as hard as possible. I like it when an artist explores within a fairly bounded set of restrictions. Still, Real Life is No Cool remains my favorite from him.

Moodles, Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

i'd say listen to Where You Go I Go Too instead, this one isn't as charming, it doesn't have as much space in it.

bantz a make her dance (c sharp major), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

Raakost - raw vegetables
Lammelaar - dried salted lamb meat
Eggedosis - what you get when you mix eggs and sugar with a blender
Vossakorv - a sheep-sausage made in Voss
Faarikaal - lamb with cabbag
Vafler - waffles

with perhaps the exception of r-r-r-r-rhythm (Sanpaku), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:31 (thirteen years ago)
