Is this 1998?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:50 (thirteen years ago)

Nick, out of your list I'd guess Andy Stott, Peaking Lights and Death Grips are the most likely. JF already gave away that Leonard didn't make it (which I wish he hadn't - even when it's "obvious" something didn't make it in it's always nice to have a little hope for a surprise).

emil.y, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

this is the best GY!BE record.

Simon H., Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

I'd honestly forgotten there was a new GY!BE record until nominations time.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:52 (thirteen years ago)

Still haven't heard it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:52 (thirteen years ago)

Schoolboy Q isn't iffy! Well apart from on ILX. I think Matt is right, he wont place at this stage of the game.

Oh God! what a boring album. I can't even stand their ridiculous album titles. Yuck!

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

I like this Mountain Goats record a good deal, and the standout tracks are amongst the high points of their catalog. However, it doesn't work that well as an album for me. I tend to skip around, dive in and out, and I haven't gotten hooked like I have with some of the prior albums.

^^^ this. I played All Eternals Deck last week and TY suffers in comparison.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

Despite Godspeed ruling supreme for me back in the day, I didn't feel any need to give A!DB!A! more than a couple of listens.

questino (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

lol

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

They have still never topped F♯ A♯ ∞ and Slow Riot... imo.

questino (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

silent majorities are here to rule agane..

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

my guess at what would be left:

Andy Stott
Blondes
Carly Rae Jepsen
Chromatics
Dawn Richard
Fiona Apple
Frank Ocean
Grimes
Jessie Ware
John Talabot
Kendrick Lamar
Miguel
Scott Walker
Swans
Taylor Swift
Todd Terje

and that leaves 4 more - here are a handful of "potential" candidates

Jam City
Schoolboy Q
How To Dress Well
Goat
Solange
Girl Unit
Holy Other

monotony, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

How many have they released since those? I quit keeping up a long time ago. xps

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

dog latin OTM about Pretenders Get Close comparison vis a vis Chairlift.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

Feel like if Lindstrom is not in with a chance I just don't know ILX anymore

Gukbe, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

Two before this one I think - they didn't put anything out for 10 years or so. xp

questino (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

never plucked up the will to listen to that one, got a bit bored with them way back

Jaap and roids (NickB), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't vote in this, but Transcendental Youth by the Mountain Goats would have been my #1. That is a doozy of a record.

Any chance Lee Ranaldo's record makes a showing? That's a record that deserves more praise than it got.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

I reckon Fourtet, Future and Farrah are more likely than most of your potentials, monotony

Jaap and roids (NickB), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

I waited for forever for a Lee Ranaldo song-based album, and when it came I wished it hadn't. ;_;

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

Future! of course

monotony, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for the Ranaldo - my favourite SY-related release in a long time. The songs were as good as his songs for the band imo.

questino (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

i never heard that lindstrom album, didn't think it was very well received?

monotony, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

If Farrah breaks top 10 I will be giddy

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

i never understood the love for saint etienne. their music is so samey and vacuous. their best song isn't even theirs. only love can break your heart.

― miesepeter (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, January 30, 2013 1:05 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

idgi, considering their music is really all over the map and each album has been pretty different. also i think 'only love can break your heart' is pretty overpraised, it's fine but a pretty tedious stomper relative to their other singles.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:03 (thirteen years ago)

There were two Lindstrom albums. One was received well, one wasn't.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:03 (thirteen years ago)

speaking of SY related projects, I thought YOKOKIMTHURSTON was interesting

Dan S, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:04 (thirteen years ago)

!!G?Y!BE; is good! I have truly never given them the time of day, but I gave them a chance with this album for some reason (mr made me listen to it) and it was massive and enjoyable. I didn't love it ardently but I liked it way more than I expected and because I assembled my ballot extremely hastily, it stayed on there.

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:04 (thirteen years ago)

miguel
jessie ware
frank ocean
kendrick
talabot

andy stott

can't remember whether todd terje was nommed or not

Jaap and roids (NickB), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

what i've heard of this GYBE album makes me want to buy it

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

Listening to this GY!BE right now and the me who would've loved this seems like someone I don't even know anymore. So not my bag now.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

idgi, considering their music is really all over the map and each album has been pretty different. also i think 'only love can break your heart' is pretty overpraised, it's fine but a pretty tedious stomper relative to their other singles.

I also considered responding to alex but then remembered that he is suffering from a chronic case of opinions4u.

Tim F, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

There were two Lindstrom albums. One was received well, one wasn't.

in that case i heard neither

is this a hint?

monotony, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

No hint. I'm just saying that if there's a Lindstrom album in the top 20, it will be Smalhans and not Six Cups of Rebel.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

i should have just let that one go with at most a seinfeldhadenough.gif

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

love that godspeed is like a feel-good comeback story. the first track on that album is amazing.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't seen a straight answer on whether this is a belated release of Lift-Up/Slow Riot outtakes or a new recording by a reformed GYBE.

Either way, I'd rcommend starting with the studio albums in chronilogical order, saving this for only if your appetitite isn't satiated.

Laid out all together that's looking like a very ILM list IMO.

Tim F, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:20 (thirteen years ago)

blood sausage quotient: perilously high

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

downton arby (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:24 (thirteen years ago)

Angel Haze and Le1f are the two main things from this last batch that I really want to check out.

Jaap and roids (NickB), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:25 (thirteen years ago)

You're in luck. Both are free downloads!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

Angel Haze made my own top ten. Heard "Gypsy Letters" twice today.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

You're in luck. Both are free downloads!

That's definitely what I need to hear as this cruellest of months stubbornly refuses to end.

Jaap and roids (NickB), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

wtf this month was awesome

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:36 (thirteen years ago)

haze is in my top 10 and i fully expect her to deliver with her major label debut, provided jason mraz or train don't show up on the tracklisting

monotony, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:36 (thirteen years ago)
