Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

That cover looks better in black and white.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

xxp LDR that is.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

haha that looks like JF just lobbing a bomb into the thread and running away

haha, kinda!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

Really digging Chairlift, don't know how this passed me by.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

I had no idea people rated this album...If I dislike the singles (maybe apart from VG), will I have any time for the deep cuts?

questino (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

LDR really feels like years ago now.

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

save us JF

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

I had no idea people rated this album...If I dislike the singles (maybe apart from VG), will I have any time for the deep cuts?

that depends, how do you feel about singers who constantly sound like they are mooing in pain?

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

probably not. i only like "summertime sadness" and "this is what makes us girls" of the deep cuts.

i'm still mystified w/r/t the extreme reactions she elicits. some of her songs really work, a lot of them really don't, ehhhhhhh.

there's one song where she sings in this ludicrously overblown sexyvoice "kiss me in the D-A-R-K tonight" and i always hear it as "kiss me in the DPRK tonight"

xps to seandalai

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

her?

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

born to yawn imo

Jaap and roids (NickB), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:54 (thirteen years ago)

this album was overrated, but the backlash was so strong that it may now be underrated.
it is (at moments) very maudlin, and was the perfect soundtrack for midnight at the new years eve dinner I attended

Dan S, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:54 (thirteen years ago)

the mental image I have of a dinner where this album would be a perfect soundtrack is my idea of hell on earth

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

i've no idea how her (on-record) voice elicits strong reactions either, it's just bland (but works sometimes)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

yawna del ray

billstevejim, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

Trying to think what Chairlift sounds like and it's this; Rosie Vela - Magic Smile.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

great run so far today though i haven't heard the LDR and suspect it's not gonna be my thing

chairlift record is wonderful especially the whole first half. very strong hooky songwriting. geir would approve

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

Underrated

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

geir would approve

Now NOBODY'S gonna listen to it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

乒乓, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

Im sure Geir would approve of LDR

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

based on what I've heard, Geir would think LDR was harmonically and melodically boring

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

Obviously it's not a great record - some of the lyrics, if nothing else, put paid to that - but I like that she stuck with her schtick for years and finally made it work. I like that she sold 3m albums without touring. I like that she survived an overblown and sometimes downright vicious backlash. I like the fact, as someone pointed out at the time, the music sounds like Mono. I like half a dozen songs on here.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

suddenly I get Chief Keef

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

this chairlift is pretty good
man i realize how out of synch i am with ILM reading this poll
and how little i really listen to new music at all anymore

downton arby (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

lana del ray record is so bad

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

i fucking love i belong on your arms but maybe the whole record needs some more time to grow

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I said on the trax thread that IBIYA is the only Chairlift song I need.

questino (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

i belong on your arms

This song needs to be written -- something about tats...

Dr. Alfred P. Falfa (WilliamC), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

tats for tits

(sorry)

I'd contest this if you haven't heard the whole thing properly. So many tracks had an instant appeal for me - very little hard work, but it still yields results on repeated play.

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

(I Just) Dyed in Your Arms

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

still love LDR, voted for it but shocked at it placing so high

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

both Arms and 'Take It Out on Me' grabbed me instantly iirc, and the rest of the record was a pretty quick grower

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

xp I have heard the album a couple of times, I do like it but nothing stands out for me the way I Belong does.

questino (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

The Chairlift album was an early favourite of mine last year that pretty much stayed with me throughout the year - I love that album. Maybe it does tail off a bit towards the end, but that's because I feel that the opening run is so strong. I'd go as far as saying that 'Met Before' was one of my favourite tracks of last year - should have nominated it. Listened to it more than the School Of Seven Bells album too. Anyway, it's too low!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, you can't really fuck with 'Sidewalk Safari', 'Wrong Opinion', 'I Belong In Your Arms', 'Take It Out On Me', 'Met Before', 'Amanaemonesia'... all sterling tracks.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:22 (thirteen years ago)

Met Before, Take It Out On Me and Ghost Tonight are all up there with IBIYA for me. They do the 80s pop thing better than anyone else at the moment.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

funny, i don't think there's anything strictly 80s about their sound, though IBIYA does hint at paul simon pretty strongly

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

xpost:

Yeah, 'Ghost Tonight' is another one. I love '80s pop/synth pop in general, so the Chairlift record was always going to be right up my street.

34. LE1F Dark York (396 Points, 12 Votes, 1 First Place Vote)

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

If the Chairlift record is this low, I'm not expecting the Daily Bread album to poll now :(

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not expecting the Daily Bread album to poll now

Did anyone even care about it besides me and you?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

Wow this is really high for Dark York. Good mixtape - my favs were Fresh and Lavandin as well as Wut - but it did have enough flaws (mixing, several subpar trax) to miss my ballot. Didn't expect it to place tbh. Should def not be higher than Haze

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

#1 vote gonna be soooo happy!

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd never heard of Le1f till the tracks poll. I like his steez though.

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

I'm fine with it being higher than Haze. (Ranked it higher than Haze) I love Reservation but took far more pleasure out of Dark York last year. More jams, more quotables, more awesomeness, etc.

Haze is more polished in some ways, but not as consistently jawdropping for me.

And you know I love them both.
