i'm not head over heels about the beat either. but still, what jess said

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

O-kayyyy....

Yes, I don't think the beat is up to some of Timbaland's past stuff.

Instead, I think Missy carries the song. ie, "it's all about Missy."

That's where we agree.

(And for the record, I think that generally, Timbaland's beats have played a greater role in the partnership; but I luv Missy to death. Whatever other interpretation you may put on the word "funny" is entirely up to you.)

Now fuck off, asshole.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Love is in the air..."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the first Missy Elliot song I've heard that I totally like. The lyrics Dan quoted are amazing. I can't wait till the video.

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, those lyrics made me very happy. (I first downloaded some mix that was just the chorus looped and I was like what the hell!?) Is she speaking Chinese after the "boys" part?

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I already broke your posts down for you telling you why I couldn't see how you were agreeing with me! if i got the wrong end of the stick then clarify.

"(quote me) That's where we agree." oh NOW i see, right.

"whatever other interpretation you may put on the word "funny" is entirely up to you"

well don't blame me for not being a mindreader then. stop getting in such a little bitchhuff cos i disagreed (??????????????) with you over a RECORD.

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i am listening to it in reverse... the backwards part just repeats "put my thang down flip it and reverse it" and the part in the verse says "watch the way missy like to take it back, woah".

Honda, Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

What you two are saying is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! (do you *see*?)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it is "nails done" after all. oh well. i luv deez hoez anyway.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

niiice. that 'drummer boy' reference should keep this one charting until christmas.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

This should become the new karaoke standard for Sarah and Emma.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't say i really like the samples; someone above said it's good timba grew out of his selfreferencing but what is this? aligning hisself with hiphop history? i don't really see any reason to see the track as an oldschool update, and it doesn't play with "classic" hiphop sentiments in any specific way. it just sounds like straight future to me, mang. the samples aren't even good braggadocio no more, just empty facile blah.

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

hopefully more people will be using the terms "cho-cha" and "ba-donk-a-donk" now.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 5 September 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

heehee... speaking of ba-donk-a-donk"....

Ben Williams, Thursday, 5 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Gobsmackingly good, if you don't like it then you're just acting dumb like "yeah, der". What's that sample at the end? Run DMC?

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes (answering my own question), it's "Peter 'bad meaning GOOD' Piper".

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorta. Bob James' "Take Me To The Mardi Gras" (as sampled in "Peter Piper"). It woulda been funnier if they'd sampled the part that comes AFTER the percussion -- perhaps TOO funny.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

heehee... speaking of ba-donk-a-donk"....

YO!

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not as overwhelmed as some of you guys are, but I'm damn impressed. then again, I'm at an internet cafe w/dodgy headphones (thanks, Nick K!)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 September 2002 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone else here the intro to "Heart of Glass" running through the whole awesome thing?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 6 September 2002 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

whoops, Jody Beth spotted it first!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 6 September 2002 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

can anyone actually confirm that Tim did the beat? everyone's operating on that assumption, but it really didn't sound like him to me (although admittedly, i've only heard it once so far, and he's been known to surprise before). if it ain't him, that would be pretty much a first for a single off her own records, but she's been doing a lot of guest spots with other producers lately, and maybe it'd do her good to not rely on him quite so much.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 6 September 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Her guest spot on the "You're So Vain" remake is the best thing she's ever done for much the same reason -- she works best carrying her own voice, also the track with Eminem off Da Real World.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 6 September 2002 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well if it's not timbaland then judging by our instant assumptions whoever it is has made a right dick of himself. but i'm sure it is.

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 6 September 2002 08:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Half-baked instant response: this is to "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" as "Get UR Freak On" is to "Woo-hah! I Got You All In Check".

(which occured to me because this "Work It" is *so* Missy's most Busta-like moment yet)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Imagine the child of Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

a sexy fat guy with dreads in a megaman costume who can't flow?

Josh (Josh), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

oh you meant the other kid

Josh (Josh), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha according to Josh, Missy + Busta = MAGOO!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 September 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

that sounds about right, actually....

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 6 September 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The chorus (only) is on Missy's Elektra site, and that was enough to turn my head a complete 360 degrees. Wow! I'm all anxious and sweaty now. I'm getting ready to leave work and see if Ameoba has a single. I never buy singles, but this is one I can't wait for the album for!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

It's an absolutely stupendous record. Gets better with every listen too.

Venga, Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

They told me the single wasn't out yet!! : (

Sean (Sean), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well duh. is it all over the radio yet sean?

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Has everyone heard the new Miss Jade track? I'm sure you know where to find a copy. I'm smitten, but then again the tracks he's chewing over some of my favourite beats from last year.

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

More responses, I'm out the door and downtown in a minute.... Ok you've a couple of minutes, I'm gonna do the washing up (not very bling bling I know)

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Prompt...... general feedback in here is baaaaad. Tsk, whadda they know.

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ching Ching" is interesting in terms of how little emphasis is placed on the beat - it's all about those percussomelodic vocal riffs.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

good point, but man, that vocal riff is *amazing* - i like how winded bubba sparx sounds while rapping and nelly furtado's voice is a really nice match... is this really a retread??

dave k, Friday, 20 September 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well yeah, that's sorta my point. Who cares about the beat when the riff is crowding everything else out of your head. (thought: what did they come up with first: the riff or the chorus?)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I am so happy with the new minimalism and the floating vocal samples. This kick's "Work It" so hard -- mainly because Missy sounds a bit lazy and Ms. Jade sounds urgent. That and Clipse will put together the new sound. JADE MUST STAY!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway I'm super happy because amp put up "Lookout Weekend" which does the grindin' beat better and I've always heard a mix with about twice the beats which is more aggro but actually less good.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

is it all over the radio yet sean?

Hell if I know, I haven't heard the radio in about 5 years. So is it?? Where are all you people hearing it?

Sean (Sean), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

my friend is a nelly furtado fan and tells me the vocal riff is actually a sample from her album, so i guess they wrote the chorus afterwards, which is pretty cool.

dave k, Friday, 20 September 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

man, i love ilm.

brian badword (badwords), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I shouted very loud when I heard this on the radio about a week ago. So is she planning on redefining pop music every year from now on? I wouldn't mind that...
