39. NICKI MINAJ Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (362 Points, 13 Votes) Spotify

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

the Wild Nothing is a very nice, pleasant album

it reminds me of the pleasant parts of junior high, kind of a generic stand-in for all of the jangly British guitar bands I was just beginning to discover as hair metal forced my attention away from pop radio

Nicki's album was 3-4 amazing songs buried under a pile of nonsense

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

The highs on the Nicki album are way high but my word there's some absolute dross as well.

pandemic, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

i like wild nothing, happy to see them way up here

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

She also has the very best mockney accent.

xp

pandemic, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sure I've listened to this Wild Nothing album before, but I didn't remember it sounding so nice. I remember his first one being a mixed bag, but this is really, really well put-together and it sounds amazing.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

Not sure if I voted but I dig the Wild Nothing. I like a lot of stuff on Captured Tracks these days, with The Soft Moon, DIIV, Mac DeMarco and some reissues.

While Converge was #1 in metal poll, there's still others that would have more crossover appeal. Of the heavy rock/metal, I would expect to see Baroness and Goat for sure, possibly Om, Neurosis, Torche, Aluk Todolo, Alcest, and probably not Witchcraft, Graveyard, Jess And The Ancient Ones, Royal Thunder or Les Discrets but I recommend them to heavy music dabblers. I doubt I'll see my #1.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

This is my favourite jam from the Nicki today I Am Your Leader

pandemic, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

Adn I think Swans top 10 for sure.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

Alcest has had some success in previous ilm polls iirc.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

Bonus topless Rick Ross in the video btw

xxp

pandemic, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

YES! I fucking love that Wild Nothing album. About time something good cropped up.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

oh god, the OM album is so so good. As are the two UFOmammut albums that got released last year. Shame they won't place.

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

NICKI!!!!!

This is a great album. There's more than an album's worth of incredible music, songs that I played to fucking death last year. My last.fm stats tell a story of Nicki obsession in 2012. Give me an album like this every time over something that's consistently decent for 12 tracks but doesn't give me anything special, who cares about the dross (and there's less of it than you might think). This was my #3 or #4 but if I was a bit more honest with myself it might have been my #1.

Stand-outs that didn't make the trax poll:

come on a cone. DICK IN YOUR FACE. PUT MY DICK IN YOUR FACE. My moment of the year.
hov lane. I DON'T GIVE A FUCK HO, LIKE WE IN THE FRIEND ZONE
pound the alarm. BOTTLE / SIP / BOTTLE / GUZZLE / I'M A BAD BITCH, NO MUZZLE. I love how the video/song elide two separate Nickis: trashy dance-pop Nicki and carnival queen island Nicki.
gun shot. That "oooh-oooh-oooh-ooooh-ooooh" melody might be the prettiest thing Nicki's ever put her name to. Probably my favourite song off the album, so emotional.
i'm legit. I DID A FREESTYLE THEN I GOT A SHOUT-OUT FROM OBAMA. She did, you know.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

xp - agree -- UFOmammut accompanied me on a lot of long walks this year! i voted for it. who knows?!

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

oh god, the OM album is so so good.

i guess i need to relisten to this

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

gun shot is the best, idk why but i always lol at the beginning of the beenie man verse "beenie man... i'm a g"

flopson, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

oh god, the OM album is so so good.

I wish I'd voted it higher TBH. it's definitely the kind of thing that non-metal fans would enjoy.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, Wild Nothing!!

jaymc, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

also i feel like the "but it's not a coherent album all the way through and i don't like some of it" criticism is just...redundant w/r/t roman reloaded since that's patently not what she was aiming for. it's a 30-track (inc the re-up) album designed for the itunes generation and to appeal to every audience she possibly can. and that whole "throwing every possible thing at the wall and seeing what sticks" isn't even a criticism of nicki any more, it's what she does, it's part of her appeal, that manic gonzo "i'm going to try EVERYTHING" attitude - why do you think she's splattered in paint on the cover?

a moment too for her completely batshit grammy performance of roman holiday

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

local boy done good

I always love the way Mountain Goats albums open and this is no exception

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

a moment too for her completely batshit grammy performance of roman holiday

I thought that was one of the most awesome things I'd ever seen on tv, but it was weird and uncomfortable according to most of my fb friends.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

who's that other band i always get confused with wild nothing? british, "dramatic" falsetto vocals, two singers?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

wild beasts. i always get them confused with wild nothing. the sad thing is i like wild beasts but i never listen to them because i can't remember if they're the one i like or not.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

lol

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

haha

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

the Grammy performance was amazing but didn't really distract from the song itself being a hot mess

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

mountain goats from like 'all hail west texas' to present is one of the greatest long runs of records ever imo. like the modern day equivalent of what neil young did in the 70s or something

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

I think Wild Nothing inhabits some of the same space as Twin Shadow, where several '80s aesthetics -- new wave, dream pop, jangly indie -- intersect. Although Twin Shadow's probably more on the synth-pop side and Wild Nothing more college rock. I think I also like them for the same reason I like bands like Pinback and the Sea and Cake: crisp guitar, wistful vibes.

jaymc, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

I thought that was one of the most awesome things I'd ever seen on tv, but it was weird and uncomfortable according to most of my fb friends.

it's so weird to me that this seemed to be the consensus, rather than it going down in history as one of the most awesome grammy performances of. all. time.? #kanyeshrug

oh god i forgot the boys didn't make the trax poll either

RRRR
pull up in a RRRR
wrist on BRRRR
pussy on PRRRR-RRRR

nicki purring got so many rewinds from me this year. plus, that video is as amazing as "stupid hoe"

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

also possibly my fav album cover of the year, cosmic cacodemons and all

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

Never heard Wild Nothing but I like Pinback a lot, maybe I should give them a go. (xposts to jaymc)

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

I like this Mountain Goats record a good deal, and the standout tracks are amongst the high points of their catalog. However, it doesn't work that well as an album for me. I tend to skip around, dive in and out, and I haven't gotten hooked like I have with some of the prior albums.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

I agree with that when I'm not listening to the album, but whenever I start to play a song off of it I end up playing the rest of the album in its entirety from that point forward

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

like right now, I just planned on jamming out to "Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1"* and now I think I am all in until at least "Counterfeit Florida Plates"

* I typoed this as "Amy aka Space Gladiator 1" on the MG thread and I have to consciously think about the actual song title to keep from making the same mistake repeatedly

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

also "White Cedar", fuck

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

"White Cedar" gives me goosebumps. It was almost uncomfortable live; my whole body twitched when the horns came in. Helluva way to open a show, too.

37. ANGEL HAZE Reservation (381 Points, 14 Votes)

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

yessss angel haze, kinda thought she might be higher though :(

the two battle rap bangers both placed on the trax poll, but the more emo stuff is kinda key to her appeal: gorgeous, poetic love songs like gypsy letters, gothic fantasies/nightmares like wicked moon

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

I bloody LOVE everything I've heard of Angel Haze.

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

she's great

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

...and suddenly this became an ILX albums poll. *heaves sigh of relief*

every dog latin has his day (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

her Classick mini-album is great too of course.

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

that jofo song "blood rushing" is so gorgeous

36. CHAIRLIFT Something (382 Points, 14 Votes, 1 First Place Vote) Spotify

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

Yes to both of these. Things are coming around.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

I love Something. There are a lot of bands who are doing a similar thing, but no one seems to come close in terms of pure pop catchy hooks. These guys really remind me of something like the Pretenders' mid-late 80s AOR-era 'Get Close' album, which often got played in the car when I was a kid. Also, Tango In The Night Mac. But this is much more than some trendy retro shite - every song exhibits strong, solid songwriting and incredibly satisfying production. I'm just amazed at how big a leap this was compared to their previous effort, which was to all extents a fair-to-middling 4AD tribute. Can't recommend Something enough.

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

huh every time I tried Chairlift previously I felt pretty disconnected from what they were doing but "Sidewalk Safari" is pretty cool

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

Great run so far, and very ILX.
