51. SUN ARAW & M. GEDDES GENGRAS MEET THE CONGOS Icon Give Thank (298 Points, 12 Votes) Spotify
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:11 (thirteen years ago)
well, Converge have definitely refined their style on this new one and made the whole package leaner and more palatable. they've trimmed the fat in a big way and it just doesn't let up. mind you, the process of becoming less and less rabid hasn't necessarily been a gradual trend since Jane Doe: You Fail Me and No Heroes were both extremely dirty-sounding records, and the new one is significantly less polished than Axe to Fall which came before it. they've just kind of followed their instincts with every new record and done what they thought was a fair thing relative to how they were feeling at a certain point in time.

ok Icon Give Thank is my first to place, that album is fantastic

My first to place too. Really good record.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:14 (thirteen years ago)
Also, I think this means no Golden Void or Fushitsusha ;_;
― every dog latin has his day (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
solid record. Happy to see it make the countdown.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:17 (thirteen years ago)
Heart of the Congos is the best roots reggae album ever made, and this is the closest the Congos have come to making anything close to as weird and wonderful since back then. That said, I have to say I find Sun Araw's whole style very samey. It's cool to listen to, but I'm never sure if the Congos' voices are being used to their full potential or simply just as adornments to spice up Sun Araw. As such I can't really tell one track from another on this record, but I'm very glad collaborations like this can exist.

*prods people to post youtube links or at least standout track titles*
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)
i think "sunshine" is the most memorable one on here Lex
― dog latin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, "Sunshine" is far and away the best track. Otherwise a solid album but rambles in places.
― Jeff W, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:22 (thirteen years ago)
Sunshine xp
― questino (seandalai), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:23 (thirteen years ago)
Icon Give Thank and Playin' Me were both on my ballot, and both share the properties of seeming insubstantial/difficult to pin down while still being very rewarding listens.
― questino (seandalai), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)
i love this album! so strange and beautiful. especially love that soul-shaking bass voice
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)
Loving "Sunshine" right now. Will have to free up time to listen to the rest of this later on.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)
Icon Give Thank and Playin' Me were both on my ballo
both very woozy and seductive listens in one way or another

― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)
what's remarkable is how the Congos' voices still sound so great even after all these years and also how as elder statesmen who otherwise make their bread and butter from straight-up pop-roots revival music centring around covers of reggae standards, they're still up for a crazy experimental venture like Icon Give Thanks. 2012 really has been about old muckers coming back and blowing people's expectations.
― dog latin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)
Love this album. Sun Araw's laptop exotica needed a soul, and the Congos are a fine option.
― with perhaps the exception of r-r-r-r-rhythm (Sanpaku), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:37 (thirteen years ago)
Re-listening to 'Sunshine'. So lovely and woozy. I like Sun Araw just fine, but he could never have made something as good as this without the genius of the Congos.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:44 (thirteen years ago)
Voted: Laurel HaloLong-listed: Lone (WOO NOTTINGHAM PRIDE), Cooly GBought, but went off: Dirty Projectors, OrbitalQuite like: Daphni, Sun Araw/Congos
― mike t-diva, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
thanks again for this poll JF. I'm quite surprised this has to be the first year where I've heard (if not heard of) so many records on the list. Usually at this point I'm completely bewildered. Don't know if this says something about music in 2012 or my own involvement with it, or something else.
― dog latin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
Which other 'old muckers' will make it? Scott Walker's a given, Cale probably not, Cohen maybe, Young probably. Any obvious ones I've missed?
― fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:46 (thirteen years ago)
Dylan, unlikely.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:47 (thirteen years ago)
How could I forget Dylan, especially as I voted for 'Dusquene Whistle' in the tracks poll.
― fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:48 (thirteen years ago)
still very disappointed with myself that i never made it to london to seem sun araw & the congos play live, i guess that's something we won't ever see a repeat of. would be cool if stallones became sort sort of stoned psychedelic version of ry cooder and made a series of albums with various rootsy folk from far flung cultures exploring their shared traditions of bonged-out sounds
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:49 (thirteen years ago)
would be better than any damon albarn project anyway
How we define "old muckers" is obviously very loose but I can list these off the top of my head: Michael Gira, Scott Walker, Neneh Cherry, Leonard Cohen, Bobby Womack, The Congos, not to mention the David Byrne collab with St Vincent - not all of those will have made it, but a lot of my favourite records this year seem to come from older artists.
― dog latin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:50 (thirteen years ago)
bill fay? paul buchanan? both too peripheral i guess
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:50 (thirteen years ago)
Bill Fay made a couple of EOY lists iirc.

damning it with faint, etc.
Not feeling it...too woozy.
― xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:53 (thirteen years ago)
Even if you were to define "old muckers" as a recording history of 10 years or more, these results so far are largely young in comparison.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:53 (thirteen years ago)
A lot of folks are failing to credit a certain Gengras, whom I'm guessing accounts for a lot of the laptop exotica in this alb
Dr John placing would be kind of amazing tho I know next to nothing about that album except for it being produced by a member ofhated band Black Keys
― every dog latin has his day (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:57 (thirteen years ago)
i don't know anything about gengras... what is he doing on the album, because I only hear Sun Araw?
― dog latin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:59 (thirteen years ago)
Cooly G was the album from my list that I was saying wasn't going to make it since it hadn't shown up yesterday. I would say it's "austere" as well, incidentally. Also, tend to relate to DJP's slant on this. It's pretty subtle but there is enough rhythmic stuff going on here to make some connection to the dance floor, even if it really is more lounge-y. (I like the quiet touches of funky.)
I still don't really get why this album places this high, and there has been like zero appreciation for Zaki Ibrahim's album. Probably a spurious comparison, of course. Let's see, they are both black women who made albums at least partly drawing on a variety of dance music rhythms and using some electronic sounds and stuff. Okay, fine, but I still think Zaki Ibrahim has been weirdly neglected, and if her album is flawed it's no more flawed than the Cooly G album.

10 per day - so we're wrapping this up next tuesday?
― 乒乓, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 17:01 (thirteen years ago)
there's 10 more today this is just an intermission
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 17:01 (thirteen years ago)
There's another 10 coming today.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 17:01 (thirteen years ago)
I've never heard of Zaki Ibrahim, Cooly G got a fair amount of attention here and in other (UK) venues. Just one datapoint obviously.

Has she covered Coldplay?
― xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 17:02 (thirteen years ago)
it's true about gengras mr drugs a money, and i quite liked his solo album from 2012 too. it's mostly a keystroke thing rather than a slight on his contribution and now you've made me type 99 more characters explaining myself
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 17:03 (thirteen years ago)
cooly g is not austere imo. there's plenty of sensual squelch there, every other sound is draped in velvet
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 17:06 (thirteen years ago)
Lol my bad but im not sure i was talking about you per se
