Pazz & Jop: #4?? christ that's high
― charlie h, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
but I find the drums a little flimsy and annoying, and the fact that he goes into long stretches of just those tinny beats is off-putting (NB: I am listening on shit computer speakers).

sorry, going way back here, but: noooooo ;_; no one would like shackleton if they only listened to it on shit computer speakers. i mean, nothing wrong with getting a little preview like that, but you just have to hear it for real at some point if you're at all curious about it.

probably because the artist's name was 'Cooly G'
― 乒乓, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
Love that record
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
Okay! There's definitely enough from previewing it that way that I like, so I'll take your word that it'll come together more sonically if I listen properly, and will attempt to make that happen soon.

AG is probably posting on Facebook as we speak
Japandroids are just so fucking functional. Even that album cover, I mean come on, can you get excited by that?
They certainly don't look very celebratory.
― Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:49 (thirteen years ago)
Granted this is the first time I've heard Cooly G and I'm only four songs in but it seems like focusing on the singing on this is completely the wrong way to approach this music; the voice is another instrument being woven into the overall sound gestalt, not a primary component.
There's a level where this is also swanky lounge music like the stuff I was complaining about in the tracks poll but this would be playing at a place I'd go to every weekend. It constantly amazes me how even the slightest bit of rhythmic syncopation elevates my connection to a piece of music.
― Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
So I suspect we'll see a couple of the things from the metal poll that "aren't real metal" (or just factually aren't metal), but not much else of that ilk...
― emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:51 (thirteen years ago)
Yes! That was my #1!! Glad to see it place!
― Frobisher the (Viceroy), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:51 (thirteen years ago)
Keep meaning to hear this! How does it compare to their other stuff?
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:51 (thirteen years ago)
i don't get what's so weird about the name cooly g
dan, i basically agree with you that the singing isn't the focus, but i think people have talked it up because there's so much more of it than anyone was expecting/than there had been in cooly g's prior singles

xpost, oh shit, haha!
Algerian Goalie - I told ya!
CONVERGE!!
and yeah, i agree it's one of their best albums; their best, in my view, since Jane Doe.
― charlie h, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
I love this run of albums today, several were ones I voted for, incl my #1 Shackleton.
I liked the Drawback Organ side of that release, but it was Music for the Quiet Hour that really brought me in, and was the accompaniment to many long midnight drives I've been required to make by my job. It reminds me of nothing so much as Coil. It has that same mysterious patrolling-the-borderlands quality as Musick to Play in the Dark
― Dan S, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
Cooly G sounds like it should be the name of a late 80s/early 90s west coast gangster rap emcee, not the name of a Goldie-influenced house music producer/singer
xposts made this irrelevant but oh well
― Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, just having read the name Cooly G on ilm and not anything else, I checked it out a while ago and was expecting some throwback hip-hop. That's not what this is.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:57 (thirteen years ago)
the snippet of Converge I heard sounded a lot less rabid than the stuff on Jane Doe and the one after (the last time I listened to Converge). Have they changed much? I always thought the attraction with Converge was their ability to rip my face off with sound. There are few albums that have quite the effect as Jane Doe.
― dog latin, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 15:58 (thirteen years ago)
Listened to that Japandroids album on a roadtrip last week. Turned it off about 2/3rds of the way through once I gave up on any actual songs appearing.

Topman GENERATION: Finally, what's the story behind your name?Cooly G: Cooly G is like, the coolest girl in the world. My dad is Jamaican and my mum is Guyanese, so I'm called a coolie, but people find that really bad if I was to spell it that way 'cos it's a slavery term. So I just put it with the 'y' so I don't have all these moany old people complaining about my name.
Topman GENERATION: Do your friends call you Cooly?Cooly G: They do and I hate it! No one calls me my real name and I feel like I'm not real.

also, cooly g fans should check out shy one's bedknobs & boomkicks (spotify) - i think you'd find a lot to like in it. (it came out pretty quietly in december.)

51. SUN ARAW & M. GEDDES GENGRAS MEET THE CONGOS Icon Give Thank (298 Points, 12 Votes) Spotify
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 16:11 (thirteen years ago)
well, Converge have definitely refined their style on this new one and made the whole package leaner and more palatable. they've trimmed the fat in a big way and it just doesn't let up. mind you, the process of becoming less and less rabid hasn't necessarily been a gradual trend since Jane Doe: You Fail Me and No Heroes were both extremely dirty-sounding records, and the new one is significantly less polished than Axe to Fall which came before it. they've just kind of followed their instincts with every new record and done what they thought was a fair thing relative to how they were feeling at a certain point in time.

Heart of the Congos is the best roots reggae album ever made, and this is the closest the Congos have come to making anything close to as weird and wonderful since back then. That said, I have to say I find Sun Araw's whole style very samey. It's cool to listen to, but I'm never sure if the Congos' voices are being used to their full potential or simply just as adornments to spice up Sun Araw. As such I can't really tell one track from another on this record, but I'm very glad collaborations like this can exist.
