This Metz album seems okay, but if I'm in the mood for something like this I'll just play Hot Snakes.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:20 (thirteen years ago)
oh cool, i was hoping someone else would go for metz! they're consistently good, but "sad pricks" stuck out for me (tee hee)
youtube - sad pricks
― Z S, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:21 (thirteen years ago)
didn't vote for it but i enjoyed that albums the few times i heard it. it's very jesus lizardy guitar rock dog latin
― a la recherche du tempbans perdu (NickB), Monday, 28 January 2013 15:22 (thirteen years ago)
WTF is METZ?
sort of a 2012 take on jesus lizard, drive like jehu, occasional in utero-style drumming,
― Z S, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)
I heard that the Metz is a good record for us metal doods. True?
― Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 28 January 2013 15:24 (thirteen years ago)
The Metz record made me dig out old Jesus Lizard, so thanks Metz!
― EZ Snappin, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:24 (thirteen years ago)
the only metz i know is the french town where there's an atp tournament every year
Didn't know this, I'm assuming they're named after that rather than the alcopop.
― Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:25 (thirteen years ago)
unlike andrew wkd
― nathey, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:27 (thirteen years ago)
it doesn't have the same lustre or immediacy as JL, or DLJ for that matter, perhaps because it's plying in a second-hand kind of way for the same effect so many years down the track.
― charlie h, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:28 (thirteen years ago)
metz record holds up fairly well; theres always a place for one or two records like this a year
― an eagle named "small government" (call all destroyer), Monday, 28 January 2013 15:28 (thirteen years ago)
I like the riff in "Knife in the Water" like whoa. But I agree that this is largely not a patch on what it's copying.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:29 (thirteen years ago)
Almost impossible to imagine an improvement on Jesus Lizard type stuff these days, that's the problem.
Maybe in 20 years...
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:33 (thirteen years ago)
wow, listening to Knife in the Water now, that riff is 100% Drive Like Jehu. don't know why i didn't pick up on that before.
― charlie h, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:37 (thirteen years ago)
This Metz album is fun!
― pandemic, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
enjoying Metz, but the production is a bit odd. Needs a bit more bottom end IMO, but then again I'm probably saying that because I'm used to these kind of records being produced in an Albini style.
― Neil S, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
they're great live, too. imagine the album just 100x louder
― Z S, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
ugh the metz album is so boring
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 28 January 2013 15:43 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, and i don't know, sort of lazy too, which isn't always an issue for me, but apparently it is here.
― charlie h, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:44 (thirteen years ago)
if you are interested in albini-esque loud obnoxious rock music, i prefer the album "man feelings" by the band fake limbs, it has more personality: http://fakelimbs.bandcamp.com/
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 28 January 2013 15:45 (thirteen years ago)
again with the personality
― pandemic, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:52 (thirteen years ago)
hey can I get a definition for 'bobbins' before we proceed further
― 乒乓, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:53 (thirteen years ago)
Techno and house music.
― Matt DC, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:54 (thirteen years ago)
xpost house and techno as opposed to d'n'b, dubstep, jungle, "bass" etc

didn't vote for any Gunplay but if i had i would've voted for 601 & Snort. cool to see him place, though.
― trench marianas (some dude), Monday, 28 January 2013 15:57 (thirteen years ago)
would have voted for this if i'd got into it in time

yeah that track is great!
― pandemic, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:09 (thirteen years ago)
i think my fav gunplay track in 2012 wasn't on this tape though (was it on another? or just standalone?)

did Metz place in the Metal poll?
― every dog latin has his day (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 28 January 2013 16:14 (thirteen years ago)
erm, i also hadn't seen the actual video before today and now i wish i hadn't posted it or watched it :////
― lex pretend, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
xp lol it was #112. should be an interesting week.
― every dog latin has his day (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 28 January 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
ha lex, that is a fantastic summation of my conflicted relationship with Gunplay
every time I hear him on something, I go "wow this dude is great" and then I watch him in something or read an interview and it's like "there is no way in hell I can support any of this"
― Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Monday, 28 January 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, that was...troubling.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:18 (thirteen years ago)
i'm annoyed because i have been SO INTO that track for the past month, one of the best discoveries of the rap EOY lists for me, just in awe of how he lands his syllables and his obvious love of words but how he never loses the rush of energy, and then, ugh
― lex pretend, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)
haha P sure you posted that youtube in the rap thread and I remember thinking at the time "really, Lex is okay with this video?"
― pandemic, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)
M1 is straight fiah tho

66. KATY B Danger EP (223 Points, 8 Votes)
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:31 (thirteen years ago)
That was eligible?
― Matt DC, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:31 (thirteen years ago)
he says he started making Vatican Shadow tracks because... he wanted more Muslimgauze albums to listen to.
That was one of the comparisons that popped into my head when I tried listening to some Vatican Shadow. I've tried really hard, but never found any Muslimgauze I've liked at all.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:32 (thirteen years ago)
4-song EPs should not be eligible for album polls
and 4-song EPs with 2 completely inessential songs should not be voted for in album polls, regardless of whether "aaliyah" is the best track ever or not
― lex pretend, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:32 (thirteen years ago)
4 normal length songs, that is, it's not like this is a suite of 4 epics
the whole thing is like quarter of an hour long
― lex pretend, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:34 (thirteen years ago)
I'm all for EPs being eligible, because if not here then where?
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:34 (thirteen years ago)
There's plenty of great Muslimgauze, the problem is about 90% of it is redundant, so after 3 albums one wonders why bother.
― Pauper Management Improved (Sanpaku), Monday, 28 January 2013 16:34 (thirteen years ago)
That k-pop thing above was an EP so..xp
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 28 January 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)
take it to the EPs poll
― a la recherche du tempbans perdu (NickB), Monday, 28 January 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)
so much for keeping tracks and albums separate
― every dog latin has his day (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 28 January 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)
I'm in favor of EPs in the album poll. I don't think this one really is a strong, long, or coherent enough collection to merit a vote.
― Pauper Management Improved (Sanpaku), Monday, 28 January 2013 16:37 (thirteen years ago)
i didn't object to EPs being eligible because some "EPs" are basically album-length, and some 6/7-track EPs feel as substantial as a mini-album (like the bigbang one, i presume), but i thought people would regulate it themselves to stop it being ridiculous. COME ON, 4 songs and 15 minutes doesn't belong in an albums poll.
