there needs to be an entire genre of music that takes 'out my mind, just in time' as its launchpad
avant-prog r&b that features motherfucking *songwriting*, it's like where ilm and i finally converge and seek a better tomorrow
listening to it right now i'm convinced it must be one of the best songs of the last 10 years
fwiw 'return of the ankh' hit me way harder than 'nu amerykah' in general

she's just uploaded some new cannabinoids stuff: https://soundcloud.com/the-cannabinoids
― SOYLENT GREEN IS SHEEPLE (stevie), Monday, 28 January 2013 00:21 (thirteen years ago)
I've never been able to get past thinking "Out My Mind" is just a much weaker take on "Green Eyes" :/
― The Reverend, Monday, 28 January 2013 00:22 (thirteen years ago)
finding that song *right now*
― imago, Monday, 28 January 2013 00:22 (thirteen years ago)
None of those Cannabinoid uploads are new. They used to have another account or something. I think the newest thing - the Jaffe remix - is from September or October. The others are last spring or older.

idk, out my mind is still winning for me - looser, jazzier, weirder, more sublimely psychedelic, more flowed-together, more interesting tune(s)
but bear in mind i've heard omm(jit) upwards of 10x, and bear also the subjectivity of these things. also don't underestimate the 'first one heard preference' syndrome
― imago, Monday, 28 January 2013 00:36 (thirteen years ago)
lol @ hearing green eyes filling the fourteen minutes between yr posts
― rockism against racism (schlump), Monday, 28 January 2013 00:37 (thirteen years ago)
'i want you', to complete the badu marathon trifecta, is much more promising thus far - krautrockish r&b crescendo, love it
― imago, Monday, 28 January 2013 00:40 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, "I Want You" might be my favorite Erykah song.
― The Reverend, Monday, 28 January 2013 00:43 (thirteen years ago)
whoa, that ending came out of nowhere! yeah, very, very awesome song.
― imago, Monday, 28 January 2013 00:48 (thirteen years ago)
I think "Didn't Cha Know" is my favorite.

Beyond structure and girth, there is a world of difference between "Green Eyes" and "Out My Mind." One is nostalgic/throwback to complement her romantic recidivism. The other is, as pointed out, fractured avant nonsense, the perfect accompaniment to her clearly premature optimism about walking away.
I think they're both great, tho, as is "I Want You."
I don't dislike anything she's done.
Except the Cannabinoids shit.

I held to the line that Out My Mind was just a boring Green Eyes retread for a long time, until I heard LJ rhapsodizing about OMM on the 2010 tracks poll
