The Aeroplane Grace Jones and MGMT remixes are dope too. Will have to seek out more Aeroplane.

The Reverend, Friday, 6 February 2009 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

friendly fires remix to come as well then, obviously. It really has been the year of Aeroplane.

danzig, Friday, 6 February 2009 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

for some reason I'd managed to avoid hearing of them even tho I've been into quite a bit of similar stuff this year

The Reverend, Friday, 6 February 2009 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

before I post the last one for today, just something interesting about the top 10. In the past couple of years, this has been the 1-2 point breakdown:

2007

1. Rihanna - Umbrella (334 points)
2. Battles - Atlas (280 points)

2006

1. Gnarls Barkley – Crazy (240 points)
2. T.I. - What You Know (172.5 points)

Generally the first place song has beat the second place song by a significant margin. This year, however, the breakdown is:

1. 322.5
2. 314

A few other funky things are goin on with the top 10 but you'll find out about them tomorrow.

2. Battles - Atlas (280 points)

LOL.

De Pussyclot Dolls (The Brainwasher), Friday, 6 February 2009 01:30 (seventeen years ago)

what about it?

gman, Friday, 6 February 2009 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

srsly i was thinking this year wasn't that great but i'm really loving most of this list.

also lol i voted for both the original and aeroplane remix of Friendly Fires - really couldn't decide which one I liked more. I know most people prefers the remix (dreamy vocals, more bliss-out disco) but the original has that sublime breakdown at the end. I hope it does make it on the list but maybe everyone used up their aeroplane votes for the three that are already on here.

Disco/Very (Roz), Friday, 6 February 2009 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

Aeroplane were responsible for so many of my favourite tracks this year I didn't think twice re-using them. 8 of my list have already turned up. I'm pretty sure there is now way 8 of my other choices would be in the top 11, which leaves a possible 4 left.

Gukbe, Friday, 6 February 2009 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

re-using Aeroplane, not the same track several times, obv

Gukbe, Friday, 6 February 2009 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

I think Brainwasher is lolling at the fact that something that isn't powder-puff R&B/dancepop/chartfluff actually made it into the top 2 tbh

oh wait this is no-hatin' 09, shi-

last one for tonight:

lil waynes babymama (musically), Friday, 6 February 2009 02:02 (seventeen years ago)

11 - Portishead - Machine Gun
173 points, 16 votes, 1 #1 vote
11 in P&J, 9 in p4k

Machine Gun is the logical endpoint of their obsession with juxtaposing human frailty with mechanical coldness...The juxtaposition of the drums and the achingly pretty, almost folksy melody in Machine Gun is what makes it work so brilliantly.
- chap

The bit in the middle of Machine Gun when the sub-bass comes in, before the 80s synths, is spine-tingling - not sure if it'll really pick up on a video stream though. I love how inhuman it all sounds.

Gukbe, Friday, 6 February 2009 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

top 5, I'd guess. Maybe even top 3, somewhere in very close proximity to "A Milli."

The year's most popular non-powder-puff R&B/dancepop/chartfluff song nicely tucked away at 11 there, clearing the way for yet another Poptimist Procession :)

(please let me be wrong)

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 6 February 2009 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

I think "Machine Gun", "Closer", and "Bongo Jam" are my only votes that have shown up.

The Reverend, Friday, 6 February 2009 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

god forbid anyone like anything populist LJ

The Reverend, Friday, 6 February 2009 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

Haha! I know, 'tis the way of the world. It'd just be nice to see a bit more recognition for other types of music in these polls.

I think "Machine Gun" did quite well in my own ballot fwiw

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 6 February 2009 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

Blind, Happy House, A Milli FITE

Doctor Casino, Friday, 6 February 2009 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

"Put On"? Not sure if anyone outside ringtone crew was hugely into that. Too bad we couldn't launch "Rollin'" into the top 50. :-/

The Reverend, Friday, 6 February 2009 02:26 (seventeen years ago)

oh, "American Boy" will be top 10 obv *shrug*

The Reverend, Friday, 6 February 2009 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

oh right. i thought it was already listed cause of all the talk upthread.

Disco/Very (Roz), Friday, 6 February 2009 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

ack. shows what I know. It must've been that the "Machine Gun" love contingent on ILX was especially vocal. Great song, whatever the case.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 03:43 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure the album will be top 5 tho.

The Reverend, Friday, 6 February 2009 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

Does anybody know if Lily Allen's "The Fear" was nominated? The "nominations" thread is making my browser crash, as soon as I open it... Anyway, I didn't get to vote this time but "The Fear" would've been my # 1.

daavid, Friday, 6 February 2009 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

2009 singles weren't eligible, so no.

holding out some hope for "love story" in the top 10, but i really have no idea how broad the taylor swift appreciation is in the electorate.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 6 February 2009 05:21 (seventeen years ago)

(but if it's not on the list at all, jeeeeez)

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 6 February 2009 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

I got into the Taylor Swift album like days after sending in my ballot :(

Maciej (maciej recognizing trill), Friday, 6 February 2009 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for "Love Story," for what it's worth.

^^my exact reaction to all the "omg i had never heard that song before" people in here. baffling.

lex pretend, Friday, 6 February 2009 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

But then you might be oblivious to some of the indier and classic rockish threads, eh, Lex? A board divided...

Cunga, Friday, 6 February 2009 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

People use ILM in different ways, I think. It's all good.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 6 February 2009 05:55 (seventeen years ago)

the theme of 20-11 seems to have been "i like this fine, but really, best of the year?" - the epitome of which is 'ready for the floor'. it's not bad but how little music must you have heard to even consider it in list-making time.

fussing over estelle's voice is the oddest path this thread has taken yet...though perhaps i've just been aware of how she sounds for ages, and how natural it is that someone w/her musical background would sound like that. it's about her casual airy swagger more than her technical chops - still think of her as an MC foremost, singer second.

i've never heard the aeroplane mgmt rmx! (not in position to now.) surely even they can't make it great, surely that is a sow's ear too far.

like 'love lockdown', glad we got it out of the way already. love aeroplane but hope that's it from them.

have resigned myself to the fact that 'i hate this part' isn't going to show up :((((
