I thought they were one of the better early 00s bands who didn't bother with bass for some reason

don't really like them though

Judging by the cover this is going to sound like The Offspring.

Choir makes the song. Actually I think it saves it. This bunch remains the world's most frustratingly near-successful band for me.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 February 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

A couple people on fb are comparing it to Gimme Shelter. Why, other than the choir? It's not like Gimme Shelter AT ALL.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2013 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

"karen why don't you rein it in and leave the shouty sloganeering bit to a gospel choir this time?"

phantompenguin, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

Gospel choirs in rock are usually the last refuge of the lazy arse but this is great.

Matt DC, Monday, 25 February 2013 23:32 (thirteen years ago)

It's good until the choir -- but I've been listening to "Like a Prayer" and Aretha all weekend.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

By the way this... totally isn't the direction I expected from the cover.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 12:23 (thirteen years ago)

The choir reminds me of Dark/Light by John Frusciante.

"Sacrilege" is incredible! vocals/choir aside, it kinda reminds me of ESG for some reason.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised by the strong positive reaction here. I think the drumming sounds amazing and am not averse to the choir, but I would've really liked a double time freakout / some sort of jam towards the end, and the song generally doesn't hold a candle to the leading couple of singles from It's Blitz.

monotony, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 22:36 (thirteen years ago)

OTM. I suppose the upsetting of expectations is part of its charm. To me the choir sounds like it got off on the wrong bus stop.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 22:37 (thirteen years ago)

I hate "Sacrilidge" so much and wish KCRW would stop playing it all the fucking time.

Gospel choir singing "sacrilidge" over and over is a so contrived. Oh so edgy!

thirdalternative, Thursday, 14 March 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

yeah tbh this is really underwhelming

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 14 March 2013 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

not hearing the choir as a "jam" at the end of this disappoints me but doesn't really surprise me

Darth Icky (DJP), Thursday, 14 March 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

I don't mind the single but I'm not blown away by it. I'm not too worried though as their lead singles are never my favourite songs on their albums, especially on the first two. Still hoping that the artwork is some kind of joke and they reveal a different cover at the last minute.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 15 March 2013 04:41 (thirteen years ago)

especially on the first two

If Date With the Night didn't blow your head off, well...then I just don't know.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 March 2013 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

When they came out it really took me a while to get into them because of how much I didn't like that song. I like it more now but still get way more enjoyement out of Pin, Maps and Y Control. I still think that is their weakest album though, for me they've improved with each album.

Fwiw, this means you are pretty much my exact opposite in terms of taste in rock music.

Never cared about these guys before Blitz came out

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 15 March 2013 08:33 (thirteen years ago)

I also like Date with the Night least on that album, by a long shot.

Sacrilege is a pretty special song. I am smitten with it. I change my mind from what I said four days ago.

Saw them Saturday night here at FYF... Still lukewarm on the new album, but they've sorted it out live. Rich / Gold Lion/ Zero / Cheated Hearts all in a row is breathtaking stadium rock hit machine.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 26 August 2013 20:08 (twelve years ago)

I suppose I get punched in the face if I say that SHOW YOUR BONES is their best proper album, right?

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 16 May 2017 18:02 (nine years ago)

i think this record has some great songs, but that's counterweighted by having possibly the worst album cover of all time

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 16 May 2017 18:03 (nine years ago)

"possibly the worst" leaves enough leeway for it to actually be the best album cover of all time so I'll allow it
