mark e (mark e), Saturday, 1 July 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

OK, so "Knock 'Em Out" is "Big Chief" by Professor Longhair, and "Smile" is "Free Soul" by the Soul Brothers, but what the hell is the "LDN" sample?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 9 July 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

Revive, for obv reson.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 July 2006 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

Damn Razorlight. If it wasn't for them it would be a top notch top three: Nelly, Shakira and Lily. It's good/unusual to see a single climb the charts - albiet in one leap from no.13 last week - to get to NUMBER ONE. Which makes a change from 'fans get it into charts first week, drops like a stone second'.

We can take the question mark off the thread title now.

David Orton (scarlet), Monday, 10 July 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

No, because she is not a true "hit."

EMI can hype her all they like but she will never be a proper star.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, well there you go.

(xpost) Marcello, she has a #1 Single in Britain. What the fuck else does she need?

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:02 (nineteen years ago)

I heard loads of teenage girls singing 'Smile' in Hyde Park the other weekend - not be Lex's mythical girls at the back of the top deck of the Hackney Omnibus, but it's a start.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

The start of what?

A #1 single in Britain in 2006 - what exactly does that mean?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

What the fuck else does she need?

decent music would be a start!

ciara had a no 1 single. did people salivate over how she was going to be 2005's hottest popstar?

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

There might have some salivating on ILM - I didn't read the relevant thread(s).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

'goodies' doesn't have a thread AT ALL. ('oh' does, as does the amazing new ciara song, though. nothing LIKE the enthusiasm lily allen's got though. lily allen is pop in an acceptable way for many people - indie ("indie/ska"), white, british, proper instruments - whereas ciara is completely un-indie, black and american, and her songs' arrangements sound like malfunctioning mobile phones)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

you should go to the msg board full of black un-indie Americans - OH WAIT IT DOESN'T EXIST ;)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I should start a thread on the Goodies. "Black Pudding Bertha," "The Funky Gibbon" - now THAT's pop!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

though really, this thread should have died a death - and with it anyone's interest - the moment people went to lallen's myspace and saw that she described herself as "indie/ska". "INDIE/SKA"! condemned from her own mouth!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

Let's just admit that she's the Happy Shopper own brand version of Neneh Cherry and leave it at that.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

cherry's too good a comparison. she's amy winehouse with all trace of wit surgically removed and clunkiness factor ratcheted up to 100. or lady sov after hanging out with the ordinary boys too much.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

only ska-pop song anyone needs this year = 'stars are blind' by paris hilton

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

From yesterday's Observer:

More than a month ago, for example, I thought to myself that I would quite like to buy Lily Allen's new album (not very original, I know, but I like to keep up with the younger generation). I looked it up on Amazon. It doesn't come out until 17 July. Now that date is drawing near and, funnily enough, I do not want it anymore. The intervening period has made me realise I am actually quite happy living without it.

Article in full.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

What kind of pseudonym is THAT marcello?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

i like Lily Allen! its good to see not all britishes have forgotten how to make good pop music :)

ferzaffe (flezaffe), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

Are you trying to do a Comstock Carabinieri there?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

lily allen is pop in an acceptable way for many people - indie ("indie/ska"), white, british, proper instruments - whereas ciara is completely un-indie, black and american

Yes, that's it. People don't like her music because the songs are catchy, they like her music because they're racist. Well done, The Lex.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

Plenty of people liked Robson and Jerome's music because the songs were catchy.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

Anyroad, my guess is the album will do particularly well as well.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

Plenty of people liked Hitler's Germany because the songs were catchy.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

After Lex's "only ska-pop song anyone needs this year = 'stars are blind' by paris hilton" line, I am eagerly anticipating his bizarro- world justification of her cover of "Do you think I'm sexy?" on the forthcoming album.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

i highly doubt i'll be defending that, not even paris could make that dreadful, disgusting song any good.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

I am beginning to doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion Paris.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 10 July 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

the interview with her in the saturday guardian was wonderful though. how amazing did she look on the cover?! beautiful.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

and the more i listen to 'stars are blind' the more i am overwhelmed and also genuinely moved by it.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

Big Mountain!

i highly doubt i'll be defending that, not even paris could make that dreadful, disgusting song any good.

some would argue that N-Trance already did this. but i prefer the original!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

not even n-trance.

i'm pausing to reflect on how much of a black hole of badness a song has to be if NOT EVEN N-TRANCE can make it good!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

I felt exactly the same way about "Won't Somebody Dance With Me?" by Lynsey de Paul when I was Lex's age (xpost x 2).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

Hybrid Kids to The Lex's ginbox!

(xp)

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes!

"Electronically produced music is one possibility of Tomorrows World!"

(I have the original 45 this was sampled from)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

Was that when Landscape came on the programme?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

I liked it when ACT were on there.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

I like the N-Trance version a lot.

Actually I like the *Rod* version quite a lot.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 July 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

me too, but it's no 'Young Turks' eh?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 10 July 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

Not unless she's given birth to a ten pound baby boy.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

i WAS going to say that all the talk of 'spitefulness' mentioned upthread is bit much cause if she were a man /boy no one would be bringing that up. no one's ever going to moan that dizzee or mike skinner are 'spiteful' or whatever...

but THEN i saw the video !! where she appears to pay for violence to be done to her ex !!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLrFAxonZwc&search=lilly%20smile

still aside from that er..quibble, album of the year for me.

pisces (piscesx), Monday, 10 July 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

not even in my top 2000 albums of the year.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

i'd like all the haterz to say which one female pop star around at the moment they prefer.

and by your answers, i shall have the measure of you sirs.

pisces (piscesx), Monday, 10 July 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

answers available at usual market rates

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 10 July 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

i'd like all the haterz to say which one female pop star around at the moment they prefer

ciara, xtina, rihanna, christina aguilera, tigarah, cassie, beyoncé, nelly furtado, pussycat dolls, madge, kelly rowland, trina, ellen allien and PARIS MOTHERFUCKING HILTON have all released incredible pop records this year which beat lollen into the ground.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

er by aguilera i mean MILIAN, as obv aguilera is xtina

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

pisces - that video along with the overly bitter/vindictive nature of a lot of the album has indeed turned around my opinion 180 degrees.

i cant listen to the album any more.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 10 July 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

as for the spitefulness of the lyrics - i think a lot of people are using the word 'spiteful' in place of eg the word 'cuntish' for male singers with equally nasty lyrics like the kaiser chiefs and mike skinner.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 July 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

I can tell you like your women "nice".

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

tigarah

lex leave tiga alone, he is NOT a woman he just dresses nice!!

hella somethin' Gwen Stefani pantwork (haitch), Monday, 10 July 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)
