@solangeknowles
There are SO many gifted writers who truly understand. Who didn't get hip to R&B & Hip-Hop via the crossover artist of their childhood.

i don't even understand this. like if your first interest in R&B was hearing Janet or Mariah or Whitney as a kid THAT makes your take on R&B invalid? what's the OG route?

captain keefheart (some dude), Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

xp i don't think j0rdan has ridden hard for indie-r&b as a thing?

So you can stop praising every rapper who raps over a trap beat, but can't form literate sentences & then you market it as some hip shit.

lol

Solange Knowles is my hero (DJP), Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

of course her comments abt R&B critics wouldn't have anything to do w/ other artists getting in the way of her special alt R&B shine now would it

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

she thought being alt would separate her from the pack & now everybody does it o wellllll

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think that's the takeaway at all.

hemioblock (The Reverend), Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

there are many takeaways. her criticism (of R&B at least) isn't far from what ppl have said around here for ages. but the purity test of R&B crit is silly as fuck

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 5 January 2013 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

SergDun ‏@SergDun
Really? You guys are trying to ride for deep brandy cuts? Get up on my level of toad the wet sprocket back catalog too

kingmost ‏@kingmost
@SergDun WHis is this at? Hollerboard?

that says it all imo

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 5 January 2013 21:10 (thirteen years ago)

anyone who mocks the idea of people riding for deep brandy cuts is basically scum

lex pretend, Saturday, 5 January 2013 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

i first read her tweets and were like "this is otm!" but the more you think about it the more disingenuous and silly it seems

seems like "REALLY UNDERSTANDING hip hop culture" is the gateway to liking latter-day Common records to me, idunno

this kinda reminds me of one time i was lured into going to the shacklewell a few years ago, some sort of hella tragic fake-ass kingdom dickrider night was afoot and to this day i can vividly recall the anaemic twerp on the decks solemnly basking in the crowd's dead reaction as he pulled the trigger on brandy 'all in me'

r|t|c, Saturday, 5 January 2013 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

vg plax post

i could almost get down with "enjoyably lazy" if i wouldnt have to scour the globe for a thousand years to hear another person admit as much

i guess for another listener this could be the meaty tension of it, the gap between blind signification and embodied vulnerability

my instinct is to agree with this based on meagre enquiries i have undertaken

SOLANGE KNOWLES, omg the infernal

captain keefheart (some dude), Sunday, 6 January 2013 05:41 (thirteen years ago)

In retrospect we really should have anticipated where this was going to end up with "jamming to feist and lemon jelly" in the original post.

Matt DC, Sunday, 6 January 2013 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

Ha! That's really a spot on distillation of the Solange.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 6 January 2013 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

I don't see what's so wrong with what she said, I've seen a lot of people on ilx say similar.

I see Tim already pulled the key quote here.

The Shacklewell is just fucking bizarre.

i dont mind the shacklewell

dunno what you lot are on about, i copied that from the flyer

r|t|c, Sunday, 6 January 2013 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

lol the last time i went to the shacklewell (and the event that convinced me to stay away from it forever) was...when SOLANGE was DJing there

lex pretend, Sunday, 6 January 2013 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

do u recall who the anaemic twerp was rtc?

lex pretend, Sunday, 6 January 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

god if you're gonna play a #deepbrandycut for the dancefloor at least let it be "sadiddy"

lex pretend, Sunday, 6 January 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

lol i forgot about brandy's tribute to pootie tang

captain keefheart (some dude), Sunday, 6 January 2013 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't know it was a tribute to anything, idk what pootie tang is

lex pretend, Sunday, 6 January 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

Pootie Tang is a 2001 American comedy film written and directed by Louis C.K..

has someone listened to "true" yet ? is it any good ?

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 11 January 2013 12:03 (thirteen years ago)

Yep. "Locked in Closets" and "Don't Let Me Down" are dope.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 January 2013 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

thanks. just listenend to "lovers in the parking lot". seems alright.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 11 January 2013 12:27 (thirteen years ago)

True is great. Bad Girls is probably my favourite song after Losing You. Only Look Good With Trouble is a bit throwaway but it is very short. Some Things Never Seem To Fucking Work is one of the other highlights but is slightly spoiled by a pretty annoying rap by Dev.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 11 January 2013 12:48 (thirteen years ago)

what's kingdom? having had a few nihilism-inducing nights at the shacklewell i feel the need to complete this vivid picture.

I didn't think of that as a "rap" so much as one of those spoken word codas that bands like Human League used to throw in, made it more tolerable to approach it that way.

Like you really should know about deep Brandy album cuts before you are giving a "grade" or a "score" to any R&B artist.

ha i agree with this obv

Yeah you're probably right. There is still something about it that I find quite annoying everytime, maybe just his voice? Those Phill Oakey moments were always so perfect.
