solange knowles @solangeknowlesLike you really should know about deep Brandy album cuts before you are giving a "grade" or a "score" to any R&B artist.
she knows she's setting fire to her whole support base here right
― some dude, Saturday, 5 January 2013 17:26 (thirteen years ago)
Dom @ichlugebulletsHow the hell does Solange have 1.3m Twitter followers and zero hit singles? How the fuck does that even work?
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 January 2013 17:28 (thirteen years ago)
khloe kardashian has 7 mil followers
― some dude, Saturday, 5 January 2013 17:29 (thirteen years ago)
j0rdan c/ping a dom tweet that isn't even try-hard "funny" but is just straight-up dumb is kind of embarrassing

yeah it's kinda meant to be suggestive of this bleary, droning, numbed torpid mumblecore inarticulacy indicating longing and heartache beyond words or whatever. simple is real cos of ~how hard it is to feel things~, to be decisive and put a fine point on it is too painful if not even by implication dishonest. the whole thing's of a piece, you got the washed out instagrammed visuals, the 80s comfort blanket for the emotional foetal position... blah blah the familiar prepack set of lies agreed upon
it's all v boring

lol even as i feel myself within the scope of this post's crosshairs its hard not to laugh along with it. it still seems somehow genealogically linked to the same epistemological crisis that birth ilx, the nuance of a reconfigured of dialectics of "popular opinion" that kindof makes it difficult to locate a position of minoritarianism. a swirl of signifiers, all those sedimentary layers of cultural resonance. the nasty tentacles of indie-centric cultural hegemony or at least the self-righteous husks of its artistic alibis and valorisations. i think the guy does better stuff, the sky ferreira thing loops around your head for a solid weekend. its lazy in a way i don't mind. actually enjoyably lazy in the same way the rtc post is "yeah yeah, you know the signifier," there's a sense of casual fluency, the barest gesture needed to register intent. i guess that's what's sortof frustrating about the solange one though, i think as a singer she's capable of some sort of actual emotional projection, vocal expressive representation, while the song is a much less ambitious thing. i guess for another listener this could be the meaty tension of it, the gap between blind signification and embodied vulnerability (sky is such a dream-girl cyborg that it has this entirely different sci-fi melancholia) but the song isn't really catchy enough for me to want to listen to it enough times to start adding that kindof interpretive layer to listening. its also like lol music journalism in another sense. or like describing things.

xp i don't think j0rdan has ridden hard for indie-r&b as a thing?
― lex pretend, Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
there's a half dozen "think pieces" published since November more Solange-worthy.
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
or is that solangious
@solangeknowlesThere are SO many gifted writers who truly understand. Who didn't get hip to R&B & Hip-Hop via the crossover artist of their childhood.
i don't even understand this. like if your first interest in R&B was hearing Janet or Mariah or Whitney as a kid THAT makes your take on R&B invalid? what's the OG route?

of course her comments abt R&B critics wouldn't have anything to do w/ other artists getting in the way of her special alt R&B shine now would it
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:50 (thirteen years ago)
she thought being alt would separate her from the pack & now everybody does it o wellllll
I don't think that's the takeaway at all.
― hemioblock (The Reverend), Saturday, 5 January 2013 20:56 (thirteen years ago)
there are many takeaways. her criticism (of R&B at least) isn't far from what ppl have said around here for ages. but the purity test of R&B crit is silly as fuck
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 5 January 2013 21:09 (thirteen years ago)
SergDun @SergDunReally? You guys are trying to ride for deep brandy cuts? Get up on my level of toad the wet sprocket back catalog too

this kinda reminds me of one time i was lured into going to the shacklewell a few years ago, some sort of hella tragic fake-ass kingdom dickrider night was afoot and to this day i can vividly recall the anaemic twerp on the decks solemnly basking in the crowd's dead reaction as he pulled the trigger on brandy 'all in me'
― r|t|c, Saturday, 5 January 2013 21:28 (thirteen years ago)
vg plax post
i could almost get down with "enjoyably lazy" if i wouldnt have to scour the globe for a thousand years to hear another person admit as much
i guess for another listener this could be the meaty tension of it, the gap between blind signification and embodied vulnerability
my instinct is to agree with this based on meagre enquiries i have undertaken
