New York girl, ooh, ooh, ooh

Runnin' pretty, New York City girl
Twenty-five, thirty-five
Hello, baby, New York City girl

You grew up ridin' the subways, running with people
Up in Harlem, down on Broadway
You're no tramp, but you're no lady, talkin' that street talk
You're the heart and soul of New York City

And love, love is just a passing word
It's the thought that you had in a taxi cab that got left on the curb
When he dropped you off at East 83rd

Oh, oh, oh [Oh, oh, oh]
You're a native New Yorker
You should know the score by now [You should know by now]
You're a native New Yorker

New York girl, ooh, ooh, ooh

Music plays, everyone's dancin' closer and closer
Makin' friends and findin' lovers
There you are lost in the shadows, searchin' for someone [Searchin' for
Someone]
To set you free from New York City

And, whoa, where did all those yesterdays go
When you still believed love could really be like a Broadway show
You are the star, win the applause

Oh, oh, oh [Oh, oh, oh]
You're a native New Yorker
No one opens the door
For a native New Yorker

[Runnin' pretty, New York City girl]
Ooh... ooh... ooh...
Native, native, native New Yorker

Where did all those yesterdays go
When you still believed love could really be like a Broadway show
You are the star

You're a native New Yorker
You should know the score by now
You're a native New Yorker

You should know the score, you should know the score by now
You're a native New Yorker, oh, oh, oh
[Native, native, native new Yorker]
You're a native New Yorker

Whoa, oh, ho, ho, you're a native New Yorker
You should know the score
[Native, native, native new Yorker]
You're a native New Yorker

What you waitin' for, no one opens the door
[You're a native New Yorker]
For a native, for a native New Yorker

ilxors getting upset abt general regional pride in rap beef b/c its anti-immigrant is the funniest critique of a rapper since whoever that blogger was that said dipset anthem is 'fascist'

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 4 January 2013 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

hemioblock (The Reverend), Friday, 4 January 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

lex pretend, Friday, 4 January 2013 22:34 (thirteen years ago)

Angel Haze is my hero (DJP), Friday, 4 January 2013 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

the only person who mentioned immigrants directly was me, in response to something johnny said, not azealia

this is the exact thing deej complains about people doing to him every day

lex pretend, Friday, 4 January 2013 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

before this new angel diss track i had definite suspicions about it being a PR stunt but now i'm like "okaaaayyyyy it's really personal *backs away slowly*"

lex pretend, Friday, 4 January 2013 22:39 (thirteen years ago)

who says it can't be both!

mahatma lambert (crüt), Friday, 4 January 2013 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

rap is all about merging the personal with the public(ity stunt)

some dude, Friday, 4 January 2013 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah that's like Beef 101. Interest generated is proportional to how real it seems.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 4 January 2013 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

Le1f ☥ Verified ‏@LE1FNY
lemme just say if any of you faggot rappers come for me like girls come for azealia, there will be no diss tracks, just knuckles n shit

into fisting i guess

President Keyes, Friday, 4 January 2013 23:47 (thirteen years ago)

xp Well for one thing it misses the point of the track. Haze has been open about coming from Michigan and writing it when she'd only just moved to New York so it's knowingly outrageous - you arrive somewhere and you have so much self-belief that you feel like you own it. She's not trying to trick anybody.

putting it on the spectrum of anti-immigrant rhetoric is LOL thats all

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 4 January 2013 23:53 (thirteen years ago)

people in america generally only care where you were born, not ancestry. if the latter mattered angel haze could pull rank as a native american!

lex pretend, Saturday, 5 January 2013 08:43 (thirteen years ago)

putting it on the spectrum of anti-immigrant rhetoric is LOL thats all

i was obviously putting johnny's comment on that spectrum, not azealia's

lex pretend, Saturday, 5 January 2013 08:44 (thirteen years ago)

Rich's reactions the most surprising.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 January 2013 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

wtf did azealia actually say that

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 5 January 2013 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

i was obviously putting johnny's comment on that spectrum, not azealia's

Not that either comment was anti-immigrant, but how did mine come across that way when her's did not?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 5 January 2013 14:37 (thirteen years ago)

not surprised by his reaction, actually.

glumdalclitch, Sunday, 6 January 2013 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

This backfired on both of them. Terrible stuff.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Monday, 7 January 2013 13:14 (thirteen years ago)

love the judgments from on high about this episode, when did male rappers beefing ever get the "tut-tut, terrible stuff" line

in a month's time no one will remember

lex pretend, Monday, 7 January 2013 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

Male rappers rarely look good beefing either - unless they can tie it into some sort of big mythology about themselves that they can build on. That certainly didn't happen here.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Monday, 7 January 2013 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i mean the Cassidy/Meek Mill thing is stupid as fuck too, it's pretty rare that beef isn't especially these days

some dude, Monday, 7 January 2013 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

i just remembered the common/drake beef over serena williams

i take my post back

though really how can anything actually "backfire" on an artist these days, that's evidence right there - everything carried on as normal for both despite their silliness, as it will here

lex pretend, Monday, 7 January 2013 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

yeah people will pretend every beef has Ja Rule levels of potential career ruination and it's just delusional, the stakes are never that high.

some dude, Monday, 7 January 2013 13:58 (thirteen years ago)

my fav were the rumors floating around this weekend that interscope had dropped azeala for calling perez a faggot. those labels and their strict morals!

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2013 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

and things move too fast. something else will happen this week. pretty sure angel at least has significantly raised her profile.

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2013 14:10 (thirteen years ago)

Beef really hasn't been the same since 50 Cent failed to take out Rick Ross. That was the Titanic of Rap Beefs.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Monday, 7 January 2013 14:11 (thirteen years ago)

well... the thing w/ that one is that people at the time saw 50 as being greater than ross even from an objective career perspective but he was really just on his execrable slide down a creative and moral bottomless pit, whereas ross' career was still on the upswing. granted that beef sort of amplified those trends but it was also 50 fucking with someone people cared more about even if a lot of others didn't realize it at the time. could say the same thing in less dramatic terms about his "beef" with kanye, too.

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2013 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

was 50 vs kanye the point where people started automatically thinking "publicity stunt" about beef? like, that was so contrived

lex pretend, Monday, 7 January 2013 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

tho yknow cf http://favstar.fm/users/roxanne_shante/status/156178152270475264

lex pretend, Monday, 7 January 2013 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

Of course. But the remarkable thing about the beef with Ross was that it was all about authenticity and myth/persona. 50 tore down Ross' narrative about himself and it still didn't help.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Monday, 7 January 2013 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

all of 50's beefs circa The Massacre 2 years earlier were widely dismissed as publicity stunts

thomp ynchon (some dude), Monday, 7 January 2013 14:33 (thirteen years ago)
