for some reason this album sounds a lot better to me now that it's like 15 degrees out

one of the great things about tay's albums for me is that when I think I've "mastered" the album or even got kinda bored of it there's a song that just came out of nowhere and be my new jam. currently the song is "i almost do".

Middle eight on "I Almost Do" is classic 4 eva

this song is realllllllly catchy

it's extremely carly rae, to the point i actually thought it was an underlistened album track or something the first time i heard it; it's got the clipped little guitars on the verse, the chorus with big distorted powerchords

i like how she basically slept through the entire end of burning man

wow, "Girl at Home" has snuck up on me! it's almost...indie pop? at least as I understand that term. like, a very minor, twee jam, may as well be a drum machine, toy synth sounds, muted bass, minor minor minor, everybody knows that, I love it

The use of "marvelous" (not a word you often hear in a pop song) and her unabashed giddiness.

Okay so recently I was corrected on this issue - I had been describing the "I must confess..." section of "baby one more time" as a middle eight and was told it is in fact a second chorus.

Would the same be true of treacherous?

yes, "Starlight" has been stuck in my head for the last week. it was slow in getting in there, but now it's there all the time.

"marvellous" is a nice detail that makes it the period piece she wanted it to be i guess

"treacherous" is packed with imagery and observations that are, like, miguel-level real. "out of focus, eye to eye, til the gravity's too much"

I like "starlight" but for unabashed giddiness I prefer "holy ground", though I guess it's colored by something deeper, an acceptance and validation of the ending it foreshadows.

iirc y'all were into the line "have ten kids and teach 'em how to dream" but i still haaaaaate it

"treacherous" explores it's key theme - the split between head and heart, the irresistible almost inevitable compulsion to do the "wrong" thing - in so many different and subtle ways, it's hard to top lyrically. The fact that the performance is so affecting makes it kinda ridiculous in its gratuitous greatness

guess the "have ten kids" line is kinda het but I roll that way & it's kinda key to how I've felt for a long time about my strongest loves

i think one of my (endless) favourite things about "treacherous" is the contrast between the very consciously delicate verses, where she might say she doesn't know if it's a choice but she's definitely trying to present herself as this powerless fragile flower who just can't help being swept away. which is the right performance for those words but also disingenuous, so when she actually gives in and owns her own power & agency - "and i will GET YOU, GET YOU ALONE" - it's such a fucking rush
