i'm a poptimist whore it's true but honestly i see nothing wrong with greeting new artists with skepticism and letting the work they put in win you over gradually, i actually change my mind about people all the time whereas i feel sometimes like dudes decide whether they like a rapper right off the bat and stick with that feeling for life

much ado about noz zing

buzza, Monday, 31 December 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

i agree with some of noz's posts but not all of them -- will have a tumblr post about this tonight, perhaps will explain it some more on twitter tomorrow

[email protected] (some dude), Monday, 31 December 2012 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

lol its almost as if its not about noz at all, but the subjects being discussed!

D-40, Monday, 31 December 2012 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i agree with noz more often than not, working on a 30 page gallery of Things Noz Is Right About

id recommend sharpening the zings for the coming year

...the rap that was uniquely propped up on indie PR machine/cool kid blog circuit this year was ephemeral, amateurish, or even outright depressing. I won't name names since you guys seem to love them. Or at least you love reblogging their photos on Tumblr and getting free drinks at their Heineken sponsored shows.

you really DO have to name names though, because otherwise you're the guy who simultaneously champions lil b and shits on rappers because they're popular on imageblogs. also the last time i checked danny brown's twitter background was a mosaic of Heineken bottles so.

een, Monday, 31 December 2012 06:05 (thirteen years ago)

i feel sometimes like dudes decide whether they like a rapper right off the bat and stick with that feeling for life

i tend to do the opposite; decide i like a rapper right off the bat and then forget about them

flopson, Monday, 31 December 2012 06:08 (thirteen years ago)

i agree w/ mccoll except that i think it's hilarious reading angry rap blogger shpiel in the p4k & appreciate how much license noz has to openly attack the site's readership. like while it's pretty horrifying to contemplate the innerworkings of the mind of an adult human who would write "just know that none of this stuff is notable or interesting or entertaining to anybody who was listening to rap music back before 2008," it's perversely comforting to imagine someone out there who feels they've just lost pitchfork as a friend

flopson, Monday, 31 December 2012 06:20 (thirteen years ago)

flopson you have not experienced true horror

negative opinions about rap music

Rolling "2 chainz" draadje (The Reverend), Monday, 31 December 2012 12:02 (thirteen years ago)

complex has done listicles for years but it seems like only since deef's been there that they do hopelessly meta listicles of "25 things everyone thinks about hip-hop (but nobody will say" and "25 most hated on rappers"

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 12:47 (thirteen years ago)

shit's actually been readable imo

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 13:04 (thirteen years ago)

oh it's def improved in some ways, props for that. just saying, my post was more pointed than just 'lol complex makes slideshows.'

the EOY stuff has been particularly ugly and difficult to navigate this year.

"hopelessly meta" does this phrase even have meaning

D-40, Monday, 31 December 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

you were the one scolding me for being meta on twitter the other day lol

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

getting an smartphone is the first thing that's made me understand complex's layout at all. it would be nice if they had a non-mobile version of their site tho.

you can say it's ugly but how is it difficult to navigate? you click on the name of the feature you want and it takes you there

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 31 December 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

youre apparently better at communicating ambiguity

just to be clear, you realize i'm talking about the place his vocals land on the beat (as in which part of the beat) rather than the slightly 'off' rhythmic nature of his voice that somedude is talking about, right -- hes putting his vocals down in unconventional places w/in the rhythm of the track

D-40, Monday, 31 December 2012 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

blah wrong tab ignore me

D-40, Monday, 31 December 2012 22:01 (thirteen years ago)

that seemed like a very cryptic metaphor for pitchfork's layout, yes

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

I tend to believe that the qualitative aspects of a classic—the ones not dictated by the great tastemaker called time—should be measured by an artist's ability to perfect their own blueprint, not The Blueprint.

Confusing de dicto with de re...

It's like I don't think you fully understand who I am, y'know?
I'm just a good kid from Compton that wanna rap
I don't represent no colors, I represent my lil' sisters and brothers
I'm the oldest, nigga
And if you can't respect that, your whole perspective is wack
Check it out

I used to wanna rap like Jay-Z
until I finally realised that Jay wasn't me

Been visiting family & traveling since the 29th, so been sporadic on ilx, but is p much every thread about deej and/or chief keef now?

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 6 January 2013 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

I figured that since we were on ilm, chief keef was some underground rapper who only put out mixtapes on datpiff or something, but i just saw one of his CDs in target today! I guess he's the taylor swift of rappers or something?

Admittedly I haven't tried to stream the YLT record yet, so maybe the "controllable" content is really awesome, but man they are really proud of themselves for catching up to what NPR has been doing for years now.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 7 January 2013 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

I was glad to stream the album, and happy to easily see/read the liner notes for the record - something that is missing from the rest of my iTunes library. I don't really knock them for giving it a heavy PR spin, even if the BS is high. What are they supposed to do, not announce that they are streaming full albums?

scott pgwp (pgwp), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 00:04 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, seems fine to me.
