So on that basis, the next YouTube sensation needs to go from zero to a billion views in about a month.

i think you're right.
― THE NATIONS YOUTH DANCED TO THE MACARANA (innocent) (forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 December 2012 22:39 (thirteen years ago)
Slightlý proud that I have still never seen this thing. I have heard bits of it and, horrifyingly, have seen parts of people trying to do the dance, but I have left the room or switched the device off asap in every case.
― lex pretend, Friday, 21 December 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)
I've no intention of ever seeing it tbh
are you going to write a piece about never having watched the gangnam style video?

it's good lex; there's no reason to avoid it

― If I was a carpenter, and you were a douchebag (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 21 December 2012 23:58 (thirteen years ago)
gangnam style is fun even without quotation marks and there is zero inherent racism in the song that I'm aware of. The video's kinda fun but its joys are far secondary to that of the song itself... anyways i suppose we've done this a dozen times already.

yeah if songs/videos are to be held culpable for any racist thoughts they attract from racist people then lex needs to take a long hard look at most of the rap he listens to

loling at gr8080's workplace parody story.
― Cunga, Saturday, 22 December 2012 00:53 (thirteen years ago)
gr80880's story pretty much encapsulates why everything about this gives me the chills. did i mention that i hate fun
― lex pretend, Saturday, 22 December 2012 08:04 (thirteen years ago)
"gangnam style flashmob" is such a horrifying phrase
haa I agree with that at least.
But forks otm - it's a great song and I usually hate novelty "lolfunny dance" stuff like the Macarena or the Ketchup Song.
― Roz, Saturday, 22 December 2012 09:58 (thirteen years ago)
the flashmobs were great back when nobody knew what they were
― 炒面kampf (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 22 December 2012 11:28 (thirteen years ago)
There was an item on the news the other day about troops in Afghanistan doing a Gangnam Style parody video, called Afghan Style - the dance they were doing bore very little approximation to Psy's, and Fiona Bruce was doing her forced 'light-hearted story' chuckle the whole way through. Excruciating.

a brave new world of global lowest-common-denominator pop
― ogmor, Sunday, 23 December 2012 01:28 (thirteen years ago)
still loving this record, had a group of kids going mental to it at work the other day and it still sounds great to me, as for all the "lol look at the funny Korean guy" bullshit well y'know idiots will always be with us
― Captain Humberbantz (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 December 2012 01:56 (thirteen years ago)
I was in a restaurant in Goa and it had a dancefloor as well and the place was full of local families who were actually up and dancing post-dinner and then at the end of the evening the DJ played Gangnam Style and everyone over the age of like 12 left the dancefloor and it was full of kids doing the horsey dance and it was one of the most endearing things I have ever seen.
^^^ THIS IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. Unfortunately as I said upthread these moments are going to be crowded out forever by the sight of Finchy from The Office types doing the dance at terrible office parties. Obviously this is ageist but I am happily excluding myself and many people younger than me from the demographic where this is acceptable.
Generally speaking its interest for me is as a meme first, a global cultural phenomenon second and as a record a very distant third.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 23 December 2012 13:43 (thirteen years ago)
Also y'know the One Pound Fish guy might beat the X-Factor dude to the Christmas Number 1 and if that happens we probably have Psy to thank.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 23 December 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)
Even in composition, "Gangnam Style" is a dance-floor number rooted in traditional Korean rhythms, a reason for its initial success at home, Kim says. "It's a folk song," he explains, "A perfect line and pattern. Koreans, a lot of times, scratch their heads: 'Why was that one song not so popular over there, when it's so big here? Or vice versa?' This, though, when it first came out in early summer, was already viral."Traditional Korean rhythms, there you go.― hurricane weather (forapper), Thursday, 13 December 2012 Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

My knowledge of Korean folk music is thin, really thin (um the album Record of Changes by Samulnori) and the only place I hear much of it in "Gangnam Style" is the syncopated "Op....Op...Op..Op.Oppa GS".

If "Korean folk music" means trot, then that sounds like Central European folk music to me. And in that case:
